Everyone except EVGA is on the Z370 mini-ITX bandwagon, and we’ll hopefully be looking at examples from most manufacturers over the coming weeks. Today, though, first out of the blocks is Gigabyte with its Z370N-WiFi.

Last time around Gigabyte had two offerings in the Z270 mini-ITX market: the reasonable but somewhat limited Z270N-WiFi and the superb Z270N-Gaming 5, which was one of our favourite Z270 boards. The Z370N-WiFi sits between the two in terms of price at £160 compared to £173 for the Gaming 5 and around £130 for the Z370N-WiFi, but thankfully it deserves to cost a little extra.

There are several additional features that warrant the price hike but also mean that a successor to the awesome Gaming 5 is perhaps a little unlikely too. Thankfully, those features mean that while in name we’re looking at a successor to the Z270N-WiFi, the Z370N-WiFi is much more capable.

There’s an extra power phase compared to the previous board, and the latter also lacked any form of heatsink for the power circuitry too. The new board sports a modest heatsink, so we’d feel far more comfortable about recommending a long-term overclock this time.

Surprisingly, the board sports not just one M. 2 port like its predecessor but two, with one also offering a large M.2 heatsink, which even MSI’s Z370 mini-ITX effort lacks. In fact, the latter only has one M.2 port whereas Gigabyte has managed to squeeze in one heatsink-equipped port on the top side and second on the rear of the PCB. Sadly, only the top slot supports either SATA or PCIe M.2 SSDs; if you want to ditch all cabled drives to make your space-limited mini-ITX case as cable-free as possible and use a PCIe SSD for your OS and a SATA M.2 SSD for a bit more storage, then the latter will have to sit under the heatsink while the toasty PCIe SSD will have to do without round the back. 

Gigabyte’s manual is a bit sketchy in this regard, but our own testing with a SATA M.2 drive confirms the online specifications that the rear slot does not support SATA M.2 SSDs. It’s not the first mini-ITX board to use this configuration, and we’d like to see all mini-ITX boards that use a rear-mounted slot to make it compatible with both types of M. 2 SSD for reasons we’ve outlined above.

As well as the improvements we’ve already mentioned, you also get an additional fan header bringing the total to three, although there is one step backwards between the two generations, which is two fewer SATA ports, falling from six to four to make way for the top-mounted M.2 port heatsink — definitely a good move in our books. The board also offers USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 headers, and both of these are handily located at the edge of the PCB, which is more than can be said for its predecessor. Lighting is fairly subdued with just a small section of LEDs under the audio circuitry, but you do get one of Gigabyte’s five-pin RGBW digital strip headers to play with.

The rear panel offers a decent amount of ports, including an outlet for the onboard 802.11ac Wi-Fi. You also get dual Intel Gigabyte LAN ports and six USB 3.0 ports. The is a Type-C port as well, but it’s worth noting that this isn’t true USB 3.1-powered and is in fact only able to adhere to the USB 3. 0 specification. While there’s obviously a 16x PCIe slot on the PCB, Gigabyte is clearly aiming at those that will be happy with Intel’s integrated graphics and provides two HDMI outputs and a single DisplayPort. There are only three mini jacks, though, and no optical output, so if you want to go all-out with a 7.1-channel speaker system, Gigabyte suggests using an HD front panel along with the onboard header and enabling the multi-channel audio feature through the audio driver.

There’s an interesting addition to specification too in that the PCIe 16x slot supports bifurcation out of the box, meaning you can use a two-way x8 riser card to power two devices. With the difference between 16 PCIe lanes and eight often being small, especially with mid and low-end cards, this has been used not only to power two graphics cards but more successfully to power both a graphics card and something like a sound card.

A Closer Look at the Z370N WIFI

The Z370N WIFI is an ITX form factor board, measuring 17 cm x 17 cm. Being a smaller board, there are some features that have been removed. There is only a single PCIe X16 slot on the board. For many users, the single PCIe slot made the ITX form-factor less popular. However, with SLI becoming less of a thing since the release of Pascal, the single PCIe slot isn’t much of an issue anymore. The Z370N WIFI has 2 DIMM slots. With higher capacity modules, you can still put 32 GB of memory on this board.

The board is mostly black with some metallic accents. The lettering on the heatsink is white and the lettering on the board is gray. The rear I/O consists of six USB 3.0, a single USB 3.1 Type C, two HDMI 2.0 ports, a single DisplayPort, dual Intel Gigabit LAN ports, up to 7.1 surround sound and adapters for the WIFI antennas. The I/O shield is black, with silver trim and labels each of the ports.

We also measure the area around the socket. This can help determine what size, and types of coolers can be used on this board. Where we used a custom loop, this wasn’t an issue. However, someone wanting to use say the Cooler Master MA610P may have an issue.   Starting at the socket, and going to the closest DIMM slot, there is about 27 mm of space.  Going from the DIMMS to the 24-pin connector, there is only about 5 mm of space. From the socket to the M.2 slot and to the VRM heatsink, there is about 25 mm of clearance. I attempted to install the MA610P from Cooler Master. This is a dual fan air cooler with two 120mm fans, one on either side. This cooler wouldn’t work. However, its smaller brother, the MA410P, the single fan version fit just fine.

Looking at the top of the board, the Z370N WIFI has a single 8-pin power connector followed by a debug port and three hybrid fan headers. One of the fan headers is designated for the CPU fan, or in this case, the pump for the loop. Going down the right side of the board, there is the 24-pin connector. Next, to the 24-pin, there is the front panel connectors, as well as the speaker connection. The Z370N WIFI has four SATA 6 ports. Next to the SATA ports are both USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 headers. Followed by the clear CMOS jumper and an LED header. There is a single PCIe X16 slot across the bottom of the board. This slot is reinforced with Gigabytes Ultra Durable PCIe Armor. It also features Gigabyte’s patented double locking bracket. The first lock is near the front of the PCIe slot, the second is at the back of the slot. Next to the PCIe slot is the front panel audio header. Next, to the 24-pin connector, there are only two DIMM slots. Again, being an ITX motherboard, you must give up a few features. However, you can still throw up to 32 GB of DDR4 on this board no problem seeing how all memory companies make 16 GB DIMMs.

The Z370N WIF supports both SATA and PCIe M.2s, as well as Intel Optane modules. The Z370N WIFI has two M.2 ports. The first M.2 port is on the front of the board and comes equipped with Gigabyte’s M.2 Thermal Guard. This is a built-in heatsink for your M.2. While benchmarking, there was about a 5°c difference with and without the Thermal Guard. The second M.2 port is on the rear of the motherboard, directly behind the first slot. Both M.2 slots support NVME PCIe Gen3 X4 M.2 SSDs at up to 32 Gb/s. The Z370N WIFI does support SATA raids 0,1,5 and 10.  So if you are using SATA based M.2s, such as the 850 EVO, you can run them in a raid. The Z370 chipset does support PCIe raid as well. However, only raids 0,1 and 5.

The Z370N WIFI has the same LGA 1151 socket as the previous two chipsets, Z170 and Z270. However, Z370 boards are not backward compatible with 6th or 7th generation Core Processors. In addition, 6th and 7th gen processors are not compatible with Z370 boards. This is due to the improved power delivery of the Z370 chipset and the fact 8th gen chips support up to DDR4 2666 MHz, where the 7th gen supported up to 2400 MHz DDR4. Although the Z270 chipset only officially supports DDR4 up to 2666 MHz, in XMP, it’s another story. Gigabyte tests their boards with XMP profiles up to 4400 MHz.

There are only a couple key differences between the Z270 and Z370 chipsets. One difference is their raid support. Both Z270 and Z370 support the same SATA raid configurations. These were mentions earlier. They are raids 0,1,5 and 10. In addition to the SATA raid configurations, the Z370 chipset also supports PCIe raids 0.1 and 5. The second difference is the type of USB headers the chipset can support. Both support up to 14 USB headers. However, on the Z370 chipset, 10 of the 14 are USB 3.1. On the Z270 chipset, 10 are USB 3.0.

The Z370N WIFI is a dual bios motherboard. This protects one of the most important parts of your PC. If your BIOS gets corrupted, you can switch from the main BIOS to the backup BIOS. This is a great feature and often overlooked by the average consumer. The dual BIOS feature can save you time, money and aggravation in the event of a BIOS issue.  Gigabyte motherboards always use the best quality solid state capacitors. These capacitors are rated to perform at maximum efficiency for long periods of time.  The capacitors used on the Z370N WIFI are rated for 10,000 hours of use. That’s twice the estimated lifespan of mainstream caps and five times that of standard caps.  These jet black capacitors are exclusive to Gigabyte motherboards.

Like most, if not all GIGABYTE motherboard, the Z370N WIFI has Smart Fan 5. Smart Fan 5 allows users to interchange their fan headers to reflect different thermal sensors at different locations on the motherboard. The Hybrid fan headers support both PWM and voltage mode fans. The Z370N WIFI has three hybrid fans headers and four temperature sensors. The hybrid fan headers can support fans, pumps or anything with a four-pin connection. This board also supports FAN STOP. This allows any fans to stay idle, until the board reaches a specific temperature, that you set to your liking.

For onboard audio, the Z370N WIFI has their AMP-UP Audio with ALC1220 120dB SNR HD Audio with Smart Headphone Amp. This is a high performance, multi-channel High Definition Audio Codec with up to 120 dB surround sound. The main feature of the onboard audio is its smart headphone amp. This app automatically detects the impedance of the headphone you’re using. This helps to eliminate issues such as low volume and distortion. Gigabyte uses only high-end audio capacitors on their motherboards. Better capacitors provide better audio fidelity and have a longer lifespan. All Gigabyte motherboards also offer Audio Noise Guard. This technology separates analog audio components from any PCB noise pollution.

This board has dual Intel Gigabit LAN ports. The Z370N WIFI comes with cFosSpeed Internet accelerator software. With cFosSpeed, you can set priority for each application to optimize bandwidth automatically. For example, you can set online games for high priority and multimedia or file sharing for medium or low priority. This way, your online games with get the bandwidth they need to run right.

These days, WIFI is everything. So, one of the best, and most useful features of the Z370N WIFI must be its dual band. 802.11 ac WIFI+BT4.2 module. This module supports 5 GHz WIFI at up to 867 Mbps compared to the 300 Mbps at 2.4 GHz. This same module also has Bluetooth 4.2. Both WIFI and Bluetooth run on 2.4 and 5 GHz bands and the 2T2R antenna expands your coverage for both.

 

This just wouldn’t be a current generation motherboard without RGB support. Gigabyte was the first to put out RGBW support with their RGB Fusion software. The W standing for white. Z370 Motherboards will support either 5v or 12v digital LED strips. LED, RGB and RGBW strips are compatible with the RGB Fusion software.  RGB Fusion with Digital LEDs comes with 9 new patterns and various speed settings with more to come.

Review: Gigabyte Z370N WiFi — Mainboard

Intel’s consumer CPU focus in the first half of 2017 has been on maximising the efficiency of its laptop chips. We can argue for this point because, lately, most of the firm’s innovation has been centred on the U-series. Now offering four cores and eight threads hewn from the Kaby Lake architecture, these 15W silicon supremos put desktop efficiency to shame.

The enthusiast and DIY market has had something to shout about at last, though. You see, the chip giant debuted 8th Generation Core Coffee Lake-based chips just last month, packing up to six cores and 12 threads at similar thermal and wattage levels as the previous generation. But getting your hands on such a platform also requires investing in a Z370 chipset motherboard, meaning it’s a clean break, as the 7th Generation Core processors won’t work in the new platform.

But that’s OK for a number of folks upgrading from, say, a PC that’s three to five years old. To them compatibility between generations is an academic concern, so the only question that needs answering is which chip and board to get? You can go normal ATX, you can go a bit smaller and look at Micro ATX, but fully appreciating the overall platform-level efficiencies baked into new architectures, why not run with Mini ITX?

Why not, indeed, asks Gigabyte, and it supports the small-form-factor crusade with a dinky little board known as the Z370N WiFi. The black-and-white scheme belies its colourful potential; you can install a Core i7-8700K, 32GB of memory, a couple of hyper-fast M.2 drives, and a GeForce GTX 1080 Ti on to this 17cm x 17cm board.

Of course, layout is key for such a small PCB. You may think that Gigabyte would take the existing Z270N WiFi, upgrade the circuity to meet 8th Generation Core standards, and be done with it. That’s not the case because the board has had a solid redesign. Chief among the improvements is a full-length heatsink for the M.2 slot, situated just below the processor socket. The thick heatsink is reckoned to lower peak temperatures by a hefty margin, helping ensure the latest drives don’t throttle when under load.

A second slot, also interfacing with the chipset via a PCIe x4 link, is present, too, available on the back of the board. The rear also contains four RGB LEDs for the inevitable light show, but if that isn’t enough, the PCB houses an RGBW header and standard LED strip header, as well. These are both new for this generation. Gigabyte also moves the 802.11ac WiFi outputs — antenna in the box — further down and combines it with Bluetooth — handy for a board that is likely to be put in a small chassis and moved around.

Three fan headers line the top, there are also four temperature sensors, while power is sourced by an 8-pin connector. The strengthened PCIe connector, the only one of its kind, accepts a dual-slot graphics card. Having it at the very bottom means that nothing obvious is blocked off when you start building into it.

The presence of USB Type-C usually indicates high-performance connectivity. In an area of minor weakness, Gigabyte doesn’t feature an add-in controller for USB 3.1 Gen 2. This means that USB speed is limited to either six USB 3.1 Gen 1 (aka USB 3.0) Type-A ports, that single USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-C, or two USB 2.0. In better news, we’re glad to see Gigabyte still use the advanced ALC1220 audio codec for a board at a £155 price point. Outputs from the integrated graphics are modern, encompassing dual HDMI and DisplayPort.

If you want a quick hardware comparison against the previous generation Z270N WiFi, Gigabyte has an extra fan header, upgrades the CPU power from four-pin to eight-pin, includes M.2 shielding this time around, has RGB headers on the board and four RGB LEDs on the back, plus a further two USB 3.1 Gen 1 ports on the I/O section. A healthy return, granted, though, in the interests of fairness, the only omission is reducing the Sata count from six to four.


We oftentimes focus solely on the hardware, leaving any manufacturer-specific software benefits on the table. Gigabyte groups its Windows-based utilities under the App Center program, with anything new installed showing up on the main screen. We chose to add a BIOS-update tool, an overclocking utility, and RGB fusion for the board’s LEDs.

Updating the BIOS is straightforward, and we used it to update to version F2b, though do be aware that any locally-stored BIOS files cannot be in folders more than one tree deep. Any manifest changes in EasyTune need a system reboot, but we’re happy to see Gigabyte actually apply the Intel-mandated Turbo speeds on our Core i7-8700K, rather than go for a sneaky turbo overclock that’ll inflate benchmark scores.


The RGB lighting is more subtle on this board than most, due to a lack of space to house lots of LEDs, and the program makes it straightforward to choose your RGB flow. You can turn it off altogether, too.

Cooling is arguably a bigger concern on a Mini ITX offering. Gigabyte continues to use its Smart Fan 5 utility, where, through System Information Viewer, you can manually change the fan curve for any installed spinner. It works well enough and has an auto-calibration mode much like Asus.

There’s a lot to like on this pint-sized motherboard, especially at the sub-£160 price point. The only omission of note is a lack of USB 3.1 Gen 2 support. Let’s now see if it can mix it with well-featured full-size motherboards in our benchmark section.

Maternal fee Z370N WIFI (Rev. 1.0) Reviews 9000 9004 motherboard, not counting glitches. I installed the operating system and, out of habit, began to install firewood manually, without express installation — as a result, when I installed the drivers from USB, the computer stopped responding to the keyboard and mouse.

Moreover, both USB 3.0 and USB 2.0 died — just some kind of game. Fortunately, the system is not the most rotten, and on 8700K + 16GB of RAM, a fresh OS was quickly installed on sata ssd. Took for 9900r, with a difference in ASRock Fatal1ty Z370 Gaming-ITX / ac in 2000r. I decided to take it cheaper, I think I did not lose, because in the tasks of video processing and building models in solid works, and not overclocking and games. Vidyuha so far 1050Ti

One of the 2 M.2 connectors is located on the back of the board, i.e. to install or replace in this slot, the board must be completely removed from the case if there is no access to the reverse side of the board in this place in the case disk — keyboard and mouse fall off and are not detected by the computer in any way, it helps either to poke the receiver into any other of the 3 USB «modules», or by turning off the hard drive. I tried hard drives with 1 wire and with additional power, the problem is the same The wireless mouse and keyboard from Logitech are very buggy, I suspect that this is due to the wifi module on the motherboard There are only 4 sata connectors Bluetooth is not installed in any way either from the native installation disk or by device id from google, as well as norton anti-ailment

Works good. Suitable for High Sierra installation. You need to adjust the BIOS settings and everything will work.

Under Windows, the built-in video card was detected incorrectly and work in default resolution. It is treated by installing firewood from the site.

Advantages:

I bought a mother in order to assemble an ultra-compact case based on the i5-8400 for installing a hackintosh. Suitable for installing a hackintosh. The only replacement is the wifi module. m.2 module connector. I bought on Ali bcm94352z FRU 04X6020 m.2 After replacing the module and installing the necessary modules, Wi-Fi and tooth work. Everything else works after installing the appropriate kexts.

Drawbacks:

A very limited list of supported SSD modules under m.2 I did not expect such an ambush here, so the purchased SSD 512GB 860 EVO m.2 refused to work, the system did not even start. I had to run through the adapter to the sata. The new BIOS firmware did not help. So I recommend checking the list of ssd supported by the mother on the official website. In general, the decisive factor in favor of this mother was precisely the presence of 2 m2 ports. Alas, it did not come in handy. PS. Talked to Gigabyte support. They did not confirm any restrictions on the use of SSD m.2. As a result, when Pico Psu came and the system was powered from it, the system started up and the SSD worked. For what reason the new desktop 350w power supply refused to work is not known, but the fact is. Pico PSU 120w
