Power Consumption (Idle and Gaming)

Putting a realistic, repeatable load on a GPU to get a decent idea of its real world power consumption and thermal output has long been something with which we’ve experimented here at bit-tech. We’ve found that synthetic benchmarks such as FurMark thrash the GPU constantly, which simply isn’t reflective of how a GPU will be used when gaming.

It’s such a hardcore test that any GPU under scrutiny is almost guaranteed to hit its thermal limit; the mark at which the card’s firmware will kick in, speeding up the fan to keep the GPU within safe temperature limits. Conversely, simply leaving a game such as Crysis running at a certain point also isn’t reflective of real-world use. There’s no guarantee that the GPU is being pushed as hard as other titles might push it, and the load will vary between play-throughs.

We used to use the Canyon Flight test of 3DMark 06, as this was a punishing and repeatable test. However, we’ve now adopted Unigine’s Heaven 3.0 benchmark, as its DirectX 11 features will stress all the parts of a modern GPU. Using our regular Unigine benchmark settings, we watch the power draw from the wall between the grass field scene and the second dragon scene — this is the toughest portion of the test for both Nvidia and AMD hardware.

As always, the authors of the material from techPowerUP did a good job so that we would not have a shadow of doubt about the power consumption of the tested video card. The graphs are very clear, as always, in fact:

Measurements in idle mode were taken when the monitor screen was just the Windows Vista Aero desktop (resolution — 1280 × 1024, 32-bit color), no programs were running, windows (in Windows, not indoors) were closed.

This is a power consumption measurement in a multi-monitor configuration. Desktop mode (Aero on), no windows open, display mode — 1280×1024 at 32-bit color.

Test above — average consumption of the card in load mode. Used Crysis 2 running at 19 resolution20×1200, on an Extreme profile. The measurement lasted only in the gaming part of the benchmark, loading screens and other non-3D were not taken into account.

The result on the slide above is the peak consumption of video cards in load mode. The technique is the same — Crysis 2, running at a resolution of 1920×1200, on the Extreme profile.

Maximum power consumption measured with Furmark Stability Test, settings were as follows: 1280×1024, 0xAA.

Last measured when Power DVD 9 was startedUltra and the film «Batman: The Dark Knight» was viewed in it at a resolution of 1920 × 1200 (a segment of the film with a bitrate of 40MB / s was used), video decoding acceleration by GPU was enabled.

Power consumption in idle, multi-monitor and while watching Blu-ray content is said to be fantastic, the situation is the same as with the reference. In game mode, not everything is so rosy, but things are not bad here either, although the HD 7850, with similar performance, shows a slightly smaller appetite for electricity. The Zotac card is slightly more power hungry than the reference product, but the difference in power consumption is negligible.

In the retail GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost with a reference design is likely to be an exception. NVIDIA partners have already prepared their versions of video cards with original coolers, PCBs and increased frequencies.

ASUS offers two models of the GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost — GTX650TIB-DC2-2GD5 with stock frequencies, as well as the boosted GTX650TIB-DC2OC-2GD5, whose graphics processor accelerates to 1085 MHz (Boost Clock) and higher under load. The adapters are equipped with a DirectCU II cooling system, Supper Alloy Power components and are equipped with a GPU Tweak utility for self-tuning the video card.

MSI has expanded its Gaming line with MSI N650 Ti Boost Twin Frozr 2GB graphics cards. The regular version of the adapter received the recommended frequency formula, while the forced modification (N650 Ti TF 2GD5/OC BE) has a graphics processor with a base frequency of 1033 MHz, and the average Boost Clock is increased to 1098 MHz.

The Twin Frozr III cooling system in this case includes 8mm heat pipes and a pair of 80mm fans to blow the radiator block.

Gigabyte also introduced its own version of the turbo graphics card — Gigabyte GTX 650 Ti Boost OC Edition (GV-N65TBOC-2GD).

The model is equipped with a WindForce 2X cooler with a pair of 100mm fans, and the GPU also runs at higher frequencies — 1032/1098 MHz, while the recommended 6008 MHz is used for memory.

Palit offers two versions of the GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost. The basic version has a classic frequency formula (980/1033, 6008 MHz), while the «OC Edition» received factory overclocking. Curiously, in the latter case, not only the GPU is accelerated to 1006/1072 MHz, but the memory frequency is also increased by 100 MHz — from 6008 to 6108 MHz.

ZOTAC uses a cooling system for its GTX 650 Ti Boost modification, which the company previously equipped with the older models of the line — GTX 660/660 Ti.

ZOTAC GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost (ZT-61201-10M) is slightly faster than the reference model. The GPU runs at 993/1059 MHz, while the memory runs at the recommended 6008 MHz. Definitely the AMP version! will receive a modified frequency formula.

Soon, many GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost will visit us for testing, after which we will be able to talk about the possibilities and prospects of a new video card with an interesting set of characteristics and a potentially «delicious» price / performance ratio.

MSI has launched four GeForce GTX 650 Ti Boost models at once. We got a top modification for testing, which is part of the new line of gaming devices from the vendor — Gaming. The Edition OS version was initially factory overclocked. The base frequency of the GPU in this case is increased to 1033 MHz, instead of the recommended 980 MHz. The memory runs at stock 6008 MHz.

To create the MSI N650Ti TF 2GD5/OC BE, one of the modifications of the GeForce GTX 660 in the manufacturer’s assortment was taken as a basis. The video card received the original printed circuit board, slightly enlarged.

The proprietary TwinFrozr III cooler is equipped with a pair of axial fans (Propeller Blades) and has an oversized aluminum fin heatsink. To speed up the transfer, in this case, three nickel-plated heat pipes are used, one of which has a diameter of 8 mm, another pair — 6 mm. At the same time, we note a successful technical solution. A large tube is fixed in the center of the heat sink — in the area of ​​increased heating, and removes heat to the farthest edge of the radiator cassette. Thus, the resources of the passive cooler are used more efficiently.

The top of the cooler is covered with an aluminum plate, on which there is a decorative insert, as well as the name of the manufacturer and series of cooling systems.

Unlike the original GTX 660, this model has some simplification. In particular, the VRM elements are deprived of an additional radiator plate, and there is no aluminum profile on the upper edge, which acts as an additional stiffener.

The expected set of connectors on the interface panel is a pair of DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort.

MSI N650Ti TF 2GD5/OC BE is not exotic. The manual and driver disk are complemented by a DVI-VGA adapter, as well as an adapter from a pair of Molex connectors to a six-pin 12V.

In idle mode, the cooler cooled the graphics chip to 24-25 degrees. The initial fan speed of 900–930 rpm is absolutely the right decision. After gaming in high-quality graphics modes and a full cycle of synthetic tests, the maximum recorded temperature of the GPU is 56 C.

In this case, the fan speed was increased to 1350 rpm. After switching to the economical 2D mode, the temperature drops quite quickly, as does the fan speed. The capabilities of the Twin Frozr III cooling system of the configuration used for such a solution are rather redundant, but this is the case when «you can’t spoil the porridge with oil.» In addition, here it is worth making an allowance for the fact that the tests were carried out on an open bench — in fact, under ideal conditions for CO with axial fans. In the case, the heating of the GPU will be higher, especially if we talk about the summer period.

The factory increase in the base clock frequency of the GPU pushed the boundaries of the GPU Boost. In games, the graphics chip accelerated up to 1175 MHz. Let’s see how this will affect the performance of the video card. As for the frequency potential, by increasing the Power Limit value to the limiting 110%, we managed to achieve stable operation of the MSI N650Ti TF 2GD5/OC BE in the 1126/6964 MHz mode.

GeForce GTX 650 Ti

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti uses the GK106 GPU, the same as the older GeForce GTX 660 model. 25 MHz. In this case, GPU Boost technology is not supported, therefore, the graphics core does not accelerate above the specified value during operation.

Recall that the GK106 uses the Kepler architecture, is manufactured using a 28-nanometer process technology and contains 2.54 billion transistors. In the case of the GeForce GTX 650 Ti, the chip has some simplifications. First of all, we note the decrease in the number of SMXs modules from 5 to 4. Each of them carries 192 computing units, which means that their total number has decreased from 960 to 768. The number of texture units has also decreased proportionally — from 80 to 64, but now there are 16 rasterization units instead of 24. . However, to compensate for the possible lack of memory bandwidth (BPS), the clock frequency of GDDR5 chips has a rather high recommended value — 5400 MHz, which provides a memory bandwidth of 86.4 GB / s.

The GeForce GTX 650 Ti uses the same PCB design as the GeForce GTX 650. This means that the reference cards are very compact. The cooling system is two-slot, although its design is very simple. It is obvious that the cooler was developed taking into account the low power consumption of the video card. The declared TDP level is 110 watts. The adapter requires additional power; a six-pin connector is placed on the PCB to connect it. For systems with quad-core processors and GeForce GTX 650 Ti, the manufacturer recommends using a 400W PSU.

Like other members of the Kepler family, the GeForce GTX 650 Ti graphics card supports PhysX, Adaptive VSync, NVIDIA Surround and TXAA, FXAA anti-aliasing modes, however, it does not allow you to use the SLI mode. The loss is small, yet adapters of this level do not often perform in doubles. But, nevertheless, we note for ourselves that in the lines of the previous generation, lower-speed video cards also had the ability to use two accelerators.

  • First, let’s test the capabilities of the cooling system. Let’s load the video card with the FurMark V1.10.2 program. the readings will be recorded by the GPU-Z program. Testing was carried out in an open case, while case fans did not affect the cooling of the video card.

    At rest, the temperature was 47 ° C at a fan speed of 1050. At the same time, it was not audible at all. The overall noise level was 37 dB. As the temperature rises, the speed increases and the noise from the cooling system increases.

    Up to 80 °C, the fan speed was less than 2000, at these figures the video card is very quiet, the noise level is no more than 45 dB.

    Under load, the temperature rose to 85 ° C, the speed increased to 2618. The noise increased to 50 dB. The temperature does not rise above this value, the cooling system tries to keep it within these limits by increasing the fan speed.

    Next, let’s test the capabilities of the video card in overclocking. To do this, we will use the EVGA PrecisionX 16 utility.

    Although the softvolt mod is available, it has not been used, but the cooling of the reference solution leaves much to be desired. It was possible to increase the GPU frequencies to 1250 MHz, while Boost Clock raised the frequency in some games to 1452 MHz. The memory frequency was raised to 1964 MHz. For more efficient cooling during overclocking, the speed of the video card fan was fixed at 3000 rpm. With such aggressive settings, this made it possible to keep the temperature of the video processor below 80 ° C.

    Synthetic tests

    These tests are interesting because they allow you to compare different gaming builds. By running these benchmarks on your gaming computer, you can compare the numbers and decide whether you need to change your video card to something more powerful, or leave everything as it is.

    Most of all, potential buyers are concerned about the performance of the video card in games. After all, this video card is bought for this. In games, testing was carried out on a monitor with a resolution of 2560 × 1080. The quality settings were set to the highest possible (you can see them on the screenshots). V-sync has been disabled to demonstrate maximum fps. The results were recorded by the Fraps program. In some games, for clarity, there are gameplay clips recorded using the ShadowPlay utility — included in the GeForce Experience driver.

    Video clips monitored by MSI Afterburner were recorded using the same program, which clearly demonstrates not only fps, but also the loading of the video core, video memory, and their frequency.
