    As you can see, despite the compact dimensions, the frequency formula of the video card is not only not reduced, but even slightly increased. So, instead of the recommended 915 MHz, the graphics core operates at a frequency of 928 MHz, and taking into account the operation of GPU Boost technology, the GPU frequency can reach 1006 MHz instead of 980 MHz. At the same time, the effective frequency of GDDR5 video memory remained unchanged and corresponds to the recommended 6008 MHz. It is also worth noting that in addition to using a printed circuit board, albeit with similar dimensions, but still of an alternative design, ASUS engineers used a cooling system of their own design from the DirectCU series.

    Packaging and contents

    The fact that ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC is not just another overclocked modification of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670, but something new, even the packaging, namely its size, says. Unlike most modern ASUS video cards, the model under consideration today comes in a more compact box. On the front side of the package, in addition to the name of the board itself, mentioning the amount and type of video memory used, there is a schematic image of the DirectCU cooling system. At the bottom of the package, it is noted that the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC belongs to the OC Edition line — factory overclocked video cards. Particularly noteworthy is the Direct Power technology, which is implemented by placing a “grounded” copper plate on the back of the textolite, which, according to the manufacturer, creates additional protection against electromagnetic interference, and also makes it possible to make heat distribution over the PCB more uniform.

    On the back of the package, the manufacturer placed the main specifications of the video card in several languages, including Russian, a brief connection diagram for displays with various interfaces, as well as an advertising description of the key features of the video card.

    The list of system requirements for the computer in which you plan to install ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC is located on one of the sides of the package. Based on the recommendation on the box, the power supply in such a system must have a power of at least 450 W and be capable of delivering up to 38 A along the + 12V line.

    The ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC package is not rich, especially for a $450+ product. In the box, we found only a disk with drivers and utilities, a user manual and one adapter from two 6-pin power connectors to one 8-pin video card power connector.

    In comparison with the «reference» sample, the set of ports for displaying the image has not changed:

    For most operating scenarios, the configuration of the video outputs of the video accelerator in question will be quite enough, unfortunately, if you need to connect an analog monitor, the user will have to take care of finding the appropriate adapter on their own.

    Appearance and element base

    As we mentioned above, the design of the printed circuit board of the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC video card, despite similar dimensions, differs from the reference version proposed by NVIDIA engineers. Unlike the «reference» sample, in this case a slightly more compact PCB is used, 174 mm long with a modified element base.

    The video card’s power stabilization system, unlike the reference NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670, has lost one phase in the video memory power circuit. Accordingly, in this case, we see 6 + 1 phase for the GPU and memory chips, respectively.

    The graphics core power system is implemented on the RT8867A controller manufactured by Richtek. As we know from the technical documentation, this controller supports the control of four phases, according to the 3 + 1 formula, as well as their active switching, designed to reduce power consumption at low load on the video card. Thus, lines with a double element base are used to stabilize the power supply of the GPU.

    In addition to the PCI-Express 3.0 connector, additional power for the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC video accelerator, instead of the two 6-pin power connectors usual for other versions of the NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670, is provided through one 8-pin connector. At the same time, the requirement for power supply power has also decreased — if the previously recommended value was 500 W, then in the case of the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC, only 450 W will be required.

    As in other versions of video cards based on NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670 graphics processor, ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC supports NVIDIA SLI technology. Accordingly, the board has two connectors for bridges, which allow you to combine from two to four video cards for joint calculation of graphic effects.

    In addition to several components of the power stabilization module and four of the eight memory chips, on the back of the PCB is the previously mentioned copper plate, which, based on Direct Power technology, is designed to make heat distribution over the surface of the printed circuit board more uniform, as well as increase the level of protection against electromagnetic interference.

    The ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC is based on the NVIDIA GK104 (Kepler) graphics chip manufactured using the 28 nm process technology. As we already know, it contains 1344 universal shader pipelines (or CUDA cores in NVIDIA terminology), 112 texture units and 32 rasterization units. The frequency of the graphics core, as we have already mentioned, has been slightly increased relative to NVIDIA’s recommendations and is 928 MHz. Thanks to the support of the GPU Boost technology in the product under consideration, in turbo mode the frequency of the graphics core can reach 1006 MHz. Data exchange between the graphics core and memory is carried out via a 256-bit bus.

    The memory of the ASUS GTX670-DCMOC-2GD5 video card, the total amount of which is 2 GB, is assembled using 8 256 MB chips manufactured by Hynix. The chips are marked H5GQ2h34AFR ROC and, according to the documentation, their nominal frequency is 6 GHz. In the corresponding section, we will check whether the absence of one phase in the video memory power circuit affected its overclocking potential.

    Cooling system

    DirectCU cooling system installed on ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC occupies two expansion slots. The video card with CO installed has a total length of 174 mm. Note that the standard width for micro-ITX motherboards is 170 mm, which confirms the excellent compatibility of the video card with compact HTPC cases.

    Despite the name DirectCU, the cooling system has almost nothing in common with coolers we’ve seen with the same name on other ASUS video cards.

    As you can see, in this case a very compact turbine-type CO is used, which consists of one small radiator with an evaporation chamber at the base and a fan with an impeller diameter of 86 mm.

    At the heart of the cooling system is a massive metal mounting plate, which also acts as a cooler for memory chips and power system elements that are in contact with it using special thermal pads. From above, the entire structure is covered with a plastic casing.

    With automatic fan speed control, in the maximum load mode, the graphics core heated up to 71 degrees, and the cooler, judging by the monitoring readings, worked at only 43% of its capacity.

    In the maximum fan speed mode, the temperature of the GPU drops to 57 degrees. The noise level in this mode of operation can be described as «medium».

    When there is no load, the graphics core and memory frequencies are automatically reduced to reduce the power consumption and heat dissipation of the graphics core. In this mode, the temperature of the GPU does not exceed 27 degrees, and the cooling system observes silence.

    As a result, the cooling system of the ASUS GeForce GTX 670 DirectCU Mini OC video card was frankly a success. Despite its compact dimensions, it does an excellent job of cooling a slightly overclocked graphics core and at the same time demonstrates a quite acceptable noise level, even at maximum fan speeds.
