I’m currently debating upgrading my single GTX 780 SC to either a GTX 980 or a GTX 780 SLI setup, however I’m not sure which would be more beneficial! Since I just built this computer and bought all the parts about a month ago, I still have the Step-Up program available to me from EVGA and it would run me about 80$ to upgrade to the GTX 980 if that helps for making a decision, however the GTX 780 has since dropped to 365$. Which would give me the most bang for my buck?

I just went from two 780 SCs in SLI to a single 980. I game at 1080p on a 144hz monitor, and need enough gpu power to get well over 100fps in BF4 consistently. With the single 980 running at 1529 Mhz I get very similar framerates to the two 780s. However, it is much smoother, as well as producing less heat. For $80 vs $365 there is no question I would get the 980. And then you have the option of adding another one later if you really need extra power.

For $80, step up to a 980.

It’s like a 780 on steroids with another 1gb of vram that runs a lot cooler and using less power.

I try to avoid sli myself if I could. I make due with a 1350MHz 780 ti!

Unless the game was frame capping your 780s (two 780s on a single 1080 monitor will do this) there is no way a single 980, even at 1529, is packing the same punch as two 780s in SLi.

. A GTX 780 ti needed to be at 2000Mhz to beat my 770’s in SLI on 3dmark11, so i can’t imagine the power 780 SLI would have compared to a single 780TI or 980.

I must be missing something…

On topic, i would step up to a single 980 for 80$ instead of getting SLI 780’s… It’ll be easy to get another 980 down the road, than getting rid of old hardware.

780 sli is alot faster than single 980. Ram is not a problem as 980s 4Gb ram works more like 2Gb because of its small bandwidh of 256-bit look in Linus tech videos for example and notice this is good review bcz all cards are overclocked. notice how the 970/980 loose more steam than 780/780ti with increased resolution. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqz4tDM6Wl8#t=18
Why is it that you should look at reviews with all cards overclocked?? its because 780/780 ti have very relaxed reference clock you have to take into acount and
the respective overclock windows of Gk110 is 30 -32 % while 970/980 window is 23 %. .. so forget the reviews that have 780 ti and 780 in stock clock and you get different story. Further more dont let High mhz core frequency fool you, per mhz gk110 is faster and Skynet already proved gtx 980 needs 250 mhz higher clock to beat 780ti and same thing with 970 vs 780.
And like I already stated! the 970/980 Ram size is misleading . bcz no matter the review and what clocks are you see 970/980 loose steam faster with increased resolution. Now just hard facts here you go, my brothers 780 2way sli gets 9487 for firestrike extreme and 17466 regular firestirke. Notice how with increased resolution of firestrike extreme it loses by even bigger margin

Evga 1280mhz 780sli Firestrike = 17466 , 780sli graphic score = 23211 the 780 setup here is 33.2 % higher overall firestrike score and 48.7% faster in terms graphical power)<—mattersAlot

Now for Firestrike Extreme where resolution is higher right? so expect even bigger margin where 780 sli is even faster. So 48.7 % faster and even more with higher res.. NO BRAINER do not do this «upgrade» bcz it would be major downgrade. Dont think 980 ti would be worth the jump either, but the fact that 980ti will be 386-bit bandwidth is appealing cause it means its 4 GB ram will work like 4GB ram!!

But in the end i highly doubt the 980ti will be 48 % faster than the regular 980…. and if it was expect it to be well over thousand dollars …. and even if its only 20 % faster it prob wont be as cheap as this Maxwell launch right now. Moral of the story is you could ride your 780’s over this generation and the next. while keeping nice top notch performance. And honestly games have not been demanding more graphical power at all…… games hit a wall while ago. Crysis 3 is pretty old and still is the most demanding game. bcz u love pc parts u might upgrade sooner than you should, but it would be wasted money, Have you noticed only things going up lately is Fps ??? cz games are the same and been actually taking less to run. Improvements in games and drivers make it easier to run in future, the need for this kind of waste of money is not here at all yet or even near future.

Yep lol they falling off the edge, the guy in the first post who said he went from 780sli to 980 either down clocked an already very low 780 reference clock or something of that very weird nature…..hmmm or even just trying to justify leaving 2 780’s for single 980. Cause not on this planet does single 980 come close to 780 sli XD

1440p here, sold my 780 sc acx and bought a 980.I suggest selling now(will get more than you would trying to sell two 780s down the line) and grab either a 980 or 970 sli.

ReAD the first question on page one. he already has 2 780’s and for him to trade them in for a single 980 is at very least a 40 % performance lost without any dispute. also for example 980 sli at 1520 mhz getting Firestrike 11620 extreme score vs my old 780’s that got 9435 extreme score.
980 sli @1520mhz only 18.8 % faster than my old 780 sli. not really at all worth the change sense you already got 2 cards.

And even bigger deal is the fact you have two Evga 780 acx …. your cards allow for easy voltage mod allowing your cards to be even faster than the 780sli in this picture!!
