HP Stream 7 Review (Updated 2021)

Table of Contents

Last Updated on March 29, 2020

The HP Stream 7 is a 7-inch tablet with a crisp, bright 1280×800 pixel LCD screen. Its CPU is a 1.83 GHz Intel Atom paired with 1 GB DDR3L SDRAM.

The battery capacity is 3000mAh, 3.7V (11.1Wh) and has a life of about 7 hours.

Cameras

It has a 2MP rear-facing camera and a 0.13MP front facing one as well. (Let’s face it – the cameras are nothing to write home to your granny about!) Maybe if the 2MP camera was front facing it would have enabled decent video calls.

Runs Full Windows

Although this is a cheap tablet it’s better than the price would imply.  It runs Windows 8:1 and is compatible with most of the legacy applications that you’re already familiar with on your desktop or laptop such as Office.

Moreover, it’s bundled with a year of Office 365, making the value for money proposition even more attractive. However, with only 1GB of memory it is almost at the limit of what Windows can run on.

Size and Build Quality

It’s a 7-inch screen, which is great when lying down on the sofa but not so great for running those Office programs. You can see and use the icons but a bit more real estate would be preferable if you’re really going to use the HP Stream 7 for productivity applications.

It’s constructed wholly in plastic (apart from the front glass). Although the back of the tablet can be removed, only the micro-SD card slot is accessible.  This micro-SD card slot allows you to play games you may already have on a memory card, or just boost the storage capacity.

The battery is visible, but can’t be removed. Overall, the case design is solid, but as the price suggests – it has no frills.

There is a virtual keyboard which is classy and the keys are usable even in portrait mode. You can type using both hands when the tablet is in landscape mode, although it is a bit cramped, especially if you have sausage fingers! However, the keys react well to inputs, even when speed typing.

The design of this tablet is a bit different which helps it to stand out from others of its kind. It feels sturdy and safe to hold. Overall, for the price, it’s a good buy, especially for kids.

Games Performance

Since a lot of people buy the HP Stream 7 for their kids, we spent some time testing out the gaming performance. You know, for research purposes!

Playing games on the HP Stream 7 was smooth and easy (once you can remove the back of the tablet which can cause a little bit of difficulty). The only issue when playing games was that the sound was hindered by holding the tablet – it’s all too easy to block the speaker.

Summary

Overall, the Hewlett Packard Stream 7 is a great tablet for the price. The screen has great viewing angles, it will run most programs, and is bundled with 70 dollars of free Office 365 applications. Just don’t expect to play Fallout 4 at 60fps!
