Multithreading technology (such as Intel’s Hyperthreading or AMD’s Simultaneous Multithreading) provides better performance by dividing each physical processor core into logical cores, also known as threads. Thus, each core can run two instruction streams at the same time.

We continue to explore the capabilities of the 4-core Intel Core i3-8100 against the background of various competitors. This time, let’s evaluate its potential in comparison with its direct predecessor and 4-core Core i5 of previous generations.

What is good about the new Intel Core i3-8100 processor, perhaps, is not worth reminding. Everyone knows this — the first Intel Core i3 processor with full 4 cores. In addition, the high clock speed and 6 MB of L3 cache make it a great CPU for gaming configurations. The only disappointing thing is the lack of budget motherboards. At the moment, only solutions based on the top Intel Z370 chipset are available.

Other important features of the Intel Core i3-8100 include a 2-channel RAM controller with guaranteed support for DDR4-2400 and an integrated UHD Graphics 630 video core. The thermal package is 65 watts. The average cost of a boxed version reaches $141.

Its direct predecessor is the Intel Core i3-7100. It has 2 physical cores, but thanks to Hyper-Threading technology, it can process information in 4 threads at a frequency of 3.9 GHz. Its L3 cache is 2 times smaller, and the RAM controller can also work with DDR3L-1600 modules. Its thermal package is 14W lower, and the price tag is at $128.

The third sample is a 4-core 4-thread Intel Core i5-7400. Like the Core i3-8100, it has 6MB of last-level cache and a 65-watt thermal package. Additionally, it supports Turbo Boost technology, so its clock speed can dynamically rise from the base 3.0 to 3.5 GHz. It can be found on the market for about $202.

And the last test subject will be a representative of the Skylake line — Intel Core i5-6400. It is the predecessor of the Core i5-7400, so it has the same 4 cores in 4 threads, a similar cache configuration and the same thermal package, but a smaller frequency formula: from 2.7 to 3.3 GHz per core in boost, slightly less productive graphics, and the RAM controller supports DDR4-2133 or DDR3L-1600. It was introduced back in 2015, but is still available for sale with an average price tag of $203.

Since Intel is still postponing the presentation of budget motherboards based on 300-series chipsets — their announcement is expected on February 14th — a bundle of Core i3-8100 with the simplest model on the Z370 will cost about $280. For the same amount, you can take a Core i5-7400 and a board based on the Intel B250 chipset, or even save about $30 and buy something on the h210 chipset.

In the end, for the Intel Core i3-8100, we used our usual testbed with a GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming motherboard, a Thermalright Archon SB-E X2 cooler, and a Patriot Viper 4 memory kit.

Test bench configuration:

  • Intel Core i3-8100
  • GIGABYTE Z370 AORUS Ultra Gaming
  • Thermalright Archon SB-E X2
  • 2x8GB DDR4-2400 Patriot Viper 4
  • Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 X3
  • GOODRAM Iridium PRO 240GB
  • GOODRAM Iridium PRO 960GB
  • Seagate IronWolf 2TB
  • Seasonic PRIME 850W Titanium
  • AOC U2879VF

We used the MSI h370-A PRO motherboard to test the other processors. It is also perfect for creating gaming or work systems thanks to its spacious ATX format, the presence of six PCIe ports, a convenient layout, four DIMM slots, which will allow you not to worry about a possible increase in RAM in the future, support for a decent disk subsystem and a good set of external interfaces.

The video card was Inno3D iChill GeForce GTX 1080 X3, and the open case Thermaltake Core P5 Tempered Glass Edition was used as the basis of the test bench.

By tradition, we will compare in synthetics and games. Since all processors have a locked multiplier, we will only test at face value. The memory frequency was chosen according to the maximum guaranteed rate for each CPU.

When working with RAM in AIDA64 , the Core i5-6400 turned out to be an obvious outsider: the rest of the processors are ahead of it by 10-12%. But the Core i3-8100 works the fastest with cache memory: in some places its advantage over the Core i3-7100 reaches 85%. And only in the reading mode with L3 it outperformed the Core i5-6400 by 4%.

The 2-core Core i3 leads in data access latency due to its higher clock speed. Although the difference with opponents does not exceed 10%.

The 7-Zip archiver had no equal Core i3-8100.
