                Intel Core i9-9900K Processor Overview

The time has come. 8-core Intel processors have finally reached the computers of ordinary users. And now every owner of even the most budget motherboard based on the 300th chipset can use the power of 16 computing threads. In the mobile industry, such solutions have long been installed in smartphones (with 8 physical cores), however, the performance of desktop stones and telephone CPU is definitely not comparable.

The Intel Core i9-9900K is a fairly «cold» processor considering how much performance it demonstrates.

So who needs power product called Core i9-9900K these days? Enthusiasts and creators of high definition 3D content. In Intel, this stone is positioned as the best solution for gaming (including in VR format), but in fact this is a delusion. The capabilities of the new CPU are redundant for modern computer games (real tests confirm this fact).

Simultaneously with the release of the ninth generation of processors, Intel also launched a chipset called the Z390. It may seem that it is with this set of system logic that fresh CPUs should be used, but this is not necessary. Given that the Intel Z390 does not fundamentally differ from the Z370 (a few additional settings in UEFI for overclocking, integrated Wi-Fi and USB 3.1 Gen 2), there is definitely no point in changing the platform.

The 9-series multi-core CPUs are compatible with any 300-series chipset, so you don’t have to upgrade your motherboard.

Intel Core i9-9900K is a top processor that is not a direct successor of the Core i7-8700K, the fresh stone with a large number of physical cores should rather be perceived as an addition to the eighth line, a kind of evolutionary continuation.

Everyone knows that 8-core CPUs in the Intel range existed before, but they were positioned exclusively as products for professionals and enthusiasts (the actually expensive Socket LGA 2011 and 2066 platforms were created just for these user groups).

Intel Core i9-9900K is a different story. This device is focused on the mainstream system based on Socket LGA 1151 and addressed to ordinary users and gamers. This is the main essence of the release of the ninth generation of CPUs from Intel: to provide the budget segment with power previously available only in the premium sector.

                Specifications

The specifications of the Intel Core i9-9900K are impressive. The 14 nm++ monster has eight physical cores and 16 computing threads. The cache size is 16 MB. Nominal clock speed — 3600 MHz, but one core in automatic order 9The 1390 is overclocked by the to 5 GHz in those applications where it is needed (and this is, in fact, all programs with single-threaded calculations).

The Intel Core i9-9900K is a real find for enthusiasts.

The reviewed processor is compatible with dual-channel DDR4-2666 RAM; to perform simple graphics tasks and to easily display images on one or more displays, you can use the integrated graphics Intel UHD Graphics 630 (exactly the same used in the eighth generation of the CPU from Intel). Play with this miniature video cores will not work in modern toys, the performance will be too low.

But it’s definitely worth adding a powerful external adapter to the Intel Core i9-9900K, 16 PCI-E lanes are allocated for this purpose.

Needless to say, the Core i9-9900K supports all of Intel’s speed-related technologies (Optane Memory, vPro Platform, Hyper-Threading, Virtualization Technology (VT-x), Intel TSX-NI instructions, AVX2, and etc. ). All this (and even more) in the asset of the new stone is definitely there.

Core i9-9900K, like other multi-core CPUs from Intel, mainly saves user time.

The Core i9-9900K claims a TDP of 95W, but system utilities show a higher TDP of 127W (maximum nominal voltage is 1.274V). And this seems to be true. To remove heat from the reviewed stone , we used a 100 W cooler ID-Cooling SE-913X; its capabilities were enough for the nominal value (63 degrees under load), but for overclocking it is no longer there, but more on that below. 9The 0003

Intel Core i9-9900K is a pretty cool processor considering how much performance it demonstrates and what kind of hardware arsenal the hides under its metal cover.

The low operating temperature is directly related not only to the energy efficiency of the solution, but also to the fact that the ninth generation CPU from Intel uses solder as an internal thermal interface. This approach has both pros and cons.

On the one hand, the solder made it possible to reduce the maximum temperature of the chip by 1-4 degrees on average, on the other hand, enthusiasts faced additional problems; after all, when scalping the CPU, the first thing to do is to melt this very solder.

                Test bench:

                Motherboard — ASUS Prime Z390-A
RAM — Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro 16 GB DDR4-4000
Video card — ASUS ROG Strix GTX 1080 Ti
                Storage — WD Black NGeVM3 block 906 GB SSD 506 power — ThunderX3 Plexus 800

                Performance and test results

The Intel Core i9-9900K is unrealistically cool, you can’t say otherwise. In those applications where it is possible to use the power of several cores, the new ninth generation easily bypasses older brother with exactly the same number of computational threads (Core i7-7820X). The high clock speed helps.

A more affordable AMD CPU with similar specs (Ryzen 7 1700) is not a competitor to the Intel Core i9-9900K. And the still relevant and sufficiently productive Core i7-7700K copes with solving professional tasks at least twice as slow as the Core i9-9900K.

The capabilities of the monitored processor (judging by the test results) are quite comparable with the power of more serious devices, for example, with Core i9-7900X and Ryzen Threadripper 1920X. This is especially noticeable in professional tasks (rendering, archiving, etc.).

The high clock speed helps the Core i9-9900K to break into the absolute leader in single-threaded computing. So far, there are not so many processors with rated at 5 GHz on the market, and this fact is an undoubted advantage of the new product from Intel.

Why do we think the Intel Core i9-9900K is not the best processor for gaming? Yes, because it is too good for such tasks, especially if you have a top-class graphics accelerator at your disposal.

Look at the test totals; additional physical cores do not affect the average frame / s in any way, four threads in our time are quite enough to process game tasks . A clear confirmation of this statement is resource monitoring in Ghost Recon Wildlands.

Intel Core i9-9900K load rate in Ghost Recon Wildlands:

                • 18% at 2160p
                • 25% in 1440p resolution
                • 29% in 1080p

And a similar alignment is observed in almost all modern projects. There is also VR, which requires serious iron . But Intel has proven that even the compact Intel NUC8i7HVK is enough for such tasks.

                Overclocking

The Intel Core i9-9900K is a real find for enthusiasts, but only for those who have liquid nitrogen or at least CBO on hand. It is hardly possible to achieve high results in the air, because this stone already operates at 5 GHz.

We were unable to get all eight physical cores running at 5000 MHz. Pampering with UEFI settings and increasing the voltage (up to 1.425 V) did not help. It was possible to get into Windows 10 at the specified frequency, but there was no talk of stability in the benchmarks.

Experienced overclockers have already appreciated the real potential of the Intel Core i9-9900K. Stable 5300 MHz requires water and voltage 1.4 V.

                Conclusion

For some, the Intel Core i9-9900K is the landmark product of , for some it is another 14nm CPU with additional cores/threads. But that’s not the point. The main thing is that fans of mainstream platforms from Intel now have an 8-core processor at their disposal (AMD has had similar solutions for more than a year, but they are not so fast).

Intel’s ninth generation CPU uses solder as an internal thermal interface.

Intel Core i9-9900K is an uncompromising and incredibly powerful stone . We are sure that the overwhelming majority of users, to whom this CPU is formally oriented, simply do not need the impressive performance of the device under review.

                The

Core i9-9900K, like other multi-core CPUs from Intel, mainly saves time for the user who does complex calculations (programs that can use a large number of threads).
