Overclocking Overclocking wise, our Pentium III 800EB sample didn’t prove to be very overclockable. We were only able to bring it up to 866 MHz stable. It would post at 933 MHz, but we couldn’t work with it. This is by no means indicative of the 800 MHz CPUs in the market. As a matter of fact, we have gotten reports of people overclocking these CPUs to well over 1 GHz without too many problems. We were not lucky enough to get one of those jewels. Conclusion Even though our sample wasn’t very overclockable, its performance is nothing to sneeze at. At an average price of just under $300.00, it’s certainly within the reach of many. Even if you are not planning to overclock it, you will definitely be satisfied with its superb performance. If you are planning to overclock it, then it might possibly be your ticket to the magical 1 GHz without the ridiculous price tag. ****Overclocking Update**** I simply couldn’t accept not being able to overclock this baby past the 866 MHz mark. I mean, we are dealing with a Coppermine CPU, and those CPUs are generally very overclockable. So I decided to throw some Alpha Slot-1 cooler action on it and see if I can go higher. Long and behold, we brought it to 933 MHz with absolutely no problems. Rock solid too! I guess, the Pentium III 550E spoiled me. Here was a CPU with a stock Intel heatsink, and we were able to overlock it 290 Mhz over original speed. I guess I was expecting the same type of behavior from our 800 MHz unit. Granted 133 MHz over is not that big of a jump, but, it’s still a lot better than the mere 66 MHz over I was able to attain before. I didn’t even attempt to go any higher, I wanted to make sure 933 MHz was stable. Since it is stable, I’m going to try to go a bit higher. Should probably know this, but I haven’t kept up with the onslot of new chips since building my last computer(P3-500). That rapid aging process can be depressing.<P>Visited Intel’s home page without finding the answer and tried comparing descriptions of the P3-933 and P3-1000EB at various resellers, without success.<P>Also, does anyone know when Intel is going to announce their price reductions? The prices have been inching down since last week, but still have a ways to go.<P>Thanks!

P3-800EB means it’s a Coppermine chip with 133 FSB, as opposed to the old 800 which was 100 FSB. <P>There is no P3-1000EB, because all P3-1GHz CPUs are Coppermine, therefore there is only a P3-1000B.<P>KC<P>From Intel:<P> ‘E’, ‘B’ and ‘EB’ nomenclature is used to differentiate processors within a processor speed designation when there is an overlap between processor frequencies and functionality. <BR>- ‘E’ designates Advanced Transfer Cache and Advanced System Buffering support.<BR>- ‘B’ designates 133 MHz System Bus support.<BR>- ‘EB’ designates Advanced Transfer Cache, Advanced System Buffering and 133 MHz System Bus support.

Appreciate your time. If I understand correctly, there is no difference between the 933 and 1000EB.<P>Intel slapped on the «EB» to reflect the ATA-133 MHz system bus since they also produced an 800 and 1000 with a ATA-100 system bus.

With a 100Mhz Front Side Bus.<P>ATA-100’s an IDE drive interface specification. <P>There is no «ATA-133», and there won’t be from what I read, as they’re making a move to Serial ATA instead of faster parallel interfaces.

You’ve almost got it…<P>There is no 1000EB, because «E» is only used to designate «Coppermine» when there is an equivalent megahertz version that is Klamath. <P>Therefore since there is a 1000/100 and a 1000/133, the 1000/100 is known as the P3-1000, and the 1000/133 is known as the P3-1000B. No EB.<P>The 933 is simply known as the 933, since the only 933 in existence is both Coppermine and 133 FSB.<P>The weird one is the 600, which comes in all three flavors:<P>600 — Klamath 100<BR>600E — Coppermine 100<BR>600EB — Coppermine 133<P>KC

There is a fourth flavor — a Klamath with a 133MHz FSB, where the model number is, predictably, suffixed with just one B. <P>There <I>is</I> a Pentium III 600B (Klamath with an external SRAM chip used for 512KB L2 cache at 300 MHz, manufactured on a 0.25 µm process).<P>Pentium III CPUs (but <I>not</I> Celerons) whose advertised clockspeeds end in 33, 66 or 67 are almost certainly rated to run with a 133 MHz FSB. Those which end in 50 are likely rated for a 100MHz FSB. Those with odd multiples of 100 are also likely to be rated for 100MHz FSB operation.
