Intel has finally launched the Pentium B980 mobile processor based on Sandy Bridge microarchitecture. Recall that this chip was added by the American giant to the product database at the end of last week, and now the status “Launched” is listed opposite it.
Note that this is a dual-core CPU, which is endowed with 2 MB of L3 cache, its clock speed is set at 2.4 GHz, which is only 100 MHz higher than that of its predecessor Pentium B970. Since the novelty is positioned by the developer as a budget solution, there are no many features typical of the Sandy Bridge family. So, the mobile Pentium lacks support for Hyper-Threading and Turbo-Boost technologies, besides, there is no Virtualization, despite the fact that the Intel website claims the opposite. Also, the chip is not compatible with AES and AVX instructions, but includes support for SSE4 and SIMD. The graphics integrated into the processor is characterized by a nominal frequency of 650 MHz with automatic overclocking in Turbo mode up to 1150 MHz. Processor Intel Pentium B980 has a declared power consumption of 35 W and is installed on mobile motherboards in socket G2.

As you remember, not so long ago we informed you about some details about the upcoming mobile processors of the brand Pentium generation Ivy Bridge — Pentium 2020M (2 .4 GHz, 35 W) and 2117U (1.8 GHz, 17 W), which are expected in the fourth quarter of the year. In order to understand how the new products will outperform the current models based on the Sandy Bridge architecture, Intel published the results of comparative tests, which demonstrated the capabilities of the upcoming Pentium 2117U, Core i3-3217U, not yet released Pentium 987 and the newly launched Celeron 877.
As a measure, the American chipmaker used the popular benchmarks PCMark07, SYSmark 2012 and HDXPRT 2011, each of which depends on the configuration of the computer system: hard drive, graphics accelerator, motherboard and memory. The test results show a significant superiority of Pentium 2117U over Pentium 987 (Sandy Bridge).
Relative bars contain CPU performance compared to Pentium 9 model87. As can be seen from the table, the Pentium 2117U is about 16% — 21% faster than the Pentium 987. This result can be considered good if we take into account that the 2117U operates at a frequency that is about 20% higher than the Pentium 987.

Less than two weeks ago Intel launched a large number of budget and mid-range desktop processors. According to foreign sources, in the fourth quarter, the American giant will introduce new Pentium mobile chips, using the following approach: Ivy Bridge models will be available for high-performance and fashion portable systems, while Sandy Bridge solutions will be used in budget laptop models. . New Pentiums on Ivy Bridge bear the designation Pentium 2020M (mainstream) and 2117U (ULV), future Pentium chips of the Sandy Bridge generation are represented by models Pentium 987 and B980 .
There is still little information about Ivy Bridge Pentium processors, but it is known that they will differ little from their predecessors. These CPUs will carry two cores and lack support for Hyper-Threading technology, 2 MB of L3 cache, and HD graphics are provided here. The Pentium 2020M features a 35W TDP and is compatible with Socket G2, it runs at 2.4GHz, just like the Pentium B980. Despite the same frequency, the latter will be inferior in performance due to the older microarchitecture. The Pentium 2117U processor has a BGA design, its TDP is 17 W, the clock frequency is set at around 1.8 GHz. According to some data, the performance advantage of this chip over the Pentium 987 (Sandy Bridge) will be around 25%.

The company Intel continues to tirelessly increase the range of its processors, while not forgetting to retire obsolete ones in time. The other day, the American giant announced the expansion of the lineup of its desktop CPUs of the middle and initial price range of the Celeron, Pentium, Core i3 and Core i5 brands, designed for installation in the LGA1155 socket.
First, let’s turn our attention to the chips, the cost of which did not exceed the hundred-dollar mark, here all representatives of the Celeron and Pentium families were included:
- Celeron G465 (Sandy Bridge) — 1 (cores) / 2 (threads), 1.9 GHz (frequency), 1.5 MB (cache), 65 W (thermal), $37;
- Celeron G550T (Sandy Bridge) — 2 (cores) / 2 (threads), 2.2 GHz (frequency), 2 MB (cache), 35 W (thermal), $42;
- Celeron G555 (Sandy Bridge) — 2 (cores) / 2 (threads), 2. 7 GHz (frequency), 2 MB (cache), 65 W (thermal), $52;
- Pentium G2100T (Ivy Bridge) — 2 (cores)/2 (threads), 2.6 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 35 W (thermal), $72;
- Pentium G2120 (Sandy Bridge) — 2 (cores)/2 (threads), 3.1 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 55 W (thermal), $86;
- Pentium G645 (Sandy Bridge) — 2 (cores) / 2 (threads), 2.9 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 65 W (thermal), $64;
- Pentium G645T (Sandy Bridge) — 2 (cores) / 2 (threads), 2.5 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 35 W (thermal), $64.
More demanding users can pick up something from the Core i3 and Core i5 series, which are based solely on the Ivy Bridge microarchitecture, and their cost is already beyond the $100 milestone.
- Core i3-3220 — 2 (cores)/4 (threads), 3.3 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 55 W (thermal), $117;
- Core i3-3220T — 2 (cores) / 4 (threads), 2.8 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 35 W (thermal), $117;
- Core i3-3225 — 2 (cores)/4 (threads), 3. 3 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 55 W (thermal), $134;
- Core i3-3240 — 2 (cores) / 4 (threads), 3.4 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 55 W (thermal), $138;
- Core i3-3240T — 2 (cores) / 4 (threads), 2.9 GHz (frequency), 3 MB (cache), 35 W (thermal), $138;
- Core i5-3330 — 4 (cores)/4 (threads), 3/3.2 GHz (frequency), 6 MB (cache), 77 W (thermal), $182;
- Core i5-3330S — 4 (cores) / 4 (threads), 2.7 / 3.2 GHz (frequency), 6 MB (cache), 65 W (thermal), $177;
- Core i5-3335S — 4 (cores) / 4 (threads), 2.7 / 3.2 GHz (frequency), 6 MB (cache), 65 W (thermal), $194;
- Core i5-3350P — 4 (cores) / 4 (threads), 3.1 / 3.3 GHz (frequency), 6 MB (cache), 69 W (thermal), $177.
The difference between the Core i5-3330S and Core i5-3335S is the integrated graphics: the former is the HD 2500, the latter is the HD 4000.
