DirectX is a collection of Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for enhancing multimedia. In the beginning, there were several multimedia APIs released by Microsoft in the name of Direct including Direct 2D, Direct 3D, DirectSound, DirectWrite, DXGI, DirectInput, DirectPlay, DirectMusic and so on. Later on, Microsoft released all these APIs collections in just one package called DirectX.
Interestingly, the name Xbox also comes from DirectX as Xbox uses the technologies introduced in DirectX. However, DirectX is installed and included in all versions of Windows, including Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8 and 10. The default version of DirectX is different in every version of Windows.
DirectX Versions and Operating Systems
Here’s the Windows version and its default DirectX installed version:
DirectX 2.0a (ver. 4.03) –> Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0
DirectX 5.2 (ver. 4.05) –> Windows 98, Windows CE
DirectX 6.1a (ver. 4.06.03) –> Windows 98 exclusive
DirectX 7 (ver. 4.07.00) –> Windows 2000
Direct 7.1 (ver. 4.07.01) –> Windows ME
DirectX 8.1 (ver. 4.08) –> Windows XP and Windows Server 2003
DirectX 9.0c (ver. 4.09) –> Windows XP SP2 and SP3, Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows Server 2003 R2
DirectX 10.1 (ver. 6.00) –> Windows Vista, Windows Server 2008
DirectX 11 –> Windows 7 SP1, Windows Server 2008 R2
DirectX 11.1 –> Windows 8, Windows RT, Windows Server 2012
DirectX 11.2 –> Windows 8.1, Windows RT, Windows Server 2012 R2
DirectX 11.3 and DirectX 12 –> Windows 10
These are only the major updates that I have listed. There were quite a few other updates and versions which were either minor or Operating System specific.

If you are a hardcore gamer or a multimedia enthusiast, then you will love every bit of the new versions of DirectX. If you are still using Windows XP, just update its DirectX to the latest version and see the difference yourself. The same thing applies to Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.
What version of DirectX do I have on my system?
If you want to know the version of DirectX installed on your computer, follow the steps below:
- Go to Run –> dxdiag
- The new window will show you details about installed DirectX components in your computer.
The above screenshot shows that DirectX 11 is installed on a Windows 8.1 system.
How to enable DirectX features?
While DirectX takes care of both display and audio, there are three major features of DirectX that you may enable or disable as per your requirement.
- DirectDraw acceleration
- Direct3D acceleration
- AGP Texture acceleration
For optimum performance, all three of these features should be enabled.
To enable or disable these features, follow the steps below:
- Go to Run –> dxdiag
- Select the Display tab
- Under DirectX features, there will be an option to enable or disable each of the features given above.
Please note that if you have multiple graphics cards installed in your PC, there will be multiple display tabs for each graphics card. You can enable or disable DirectX features for each graphics card separately.
Download DirectX
From Windows 8 onwards, Microsoft is not distributing DirectX separately. If you want to update DirectX, you will need to enable Windows Updates.
For Windows 10 (DirectX 12)
DirectX 12 does not have a manual standalone setup which can be downloaded separately. It comes directly from Microsoft Update. If you want to keep your DirectX version updated, you should enable automatic Windows Updates if disabled earlier. This will ensure that your DirectX 12 on Windows 10 is up to date. Tip: You can enable or disable Windows Update using the command line.
The same procedure applies for Windows 8 (DirectX 11.1) and Windows 8.1 (DirectX 11.2)
For Windows 7 (DirectX 11)

For Windows Vista (DirectX 10)
I have not been able to find the direct download link for DirectX 10 but there are forks of DirectX 10 available for download. You can download these to upgrade your Windows XP to DirectX 10 but these are not recommended. That’s why I’m only listing their names and not the download links. You can search Google for the actual download files:

The web installer will automatically download the right and the latest version of DirectX for your Windows computer.
It can also be useful in case you are having problems with the DirectX installation like missing DLLs etc. You can just download and install the setup on top of existing installation and everything will be ok.

Error S1023 when installing DirectX SDK — Application Developer

This article will help resolve error S1023 that occurs when installing the June 2010 DirectX SDK
Original Product Version: Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 7 Home Basic, Windows 7 Professional

Symptoms June 2010 DirectX SDK Error S1023 may appear.
Cause
The problem occurs because a newer version of the Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable is present on the computer. The June 2010 DirectX SDK installs version 10.0.30319Visual C++ Redistributable.
Solution
To resolve this issue, you must uninstall all versions of the Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable before installing the June 2010 directX SDK. You may have one or more of the following:
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x86 Redistributable
- Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 x64 Redistributable
You can use the «Control Panel» function to uninstall products in the Control Panel. Alternatively, you can run the following commands from an administrator command prompt:
MsiExec.exe /passive /X{F0C3E5D1-1ADE-321E-8167-68EF0DE699A5}
MsiExec.exe /passive /X{1D8E6291-B0D5-35EC-8441-6616F567A0F7}
After uninstalling the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributables, you can install the DirectX SDK.
After you install the June 2010 directX SDK, you can reinstall the latest Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 MFC Redistributable Package.
The same issue may prevent installation of the Windows 7 SDK.
FIX: «Fatal error — exception in exception handler» in Windows 10
Error « Fatal Error — Exception in Exception Handler » occurs in Windows 10 games. Many forum players have reported that Command and Conquer 3 and Rise of the Witch Kings are getting an error message. When the issue occurs, the games won’t launch and return a fatal error window with the message « Exception in exception handler. This error mostly affects laptops or desktops with Intel HD GPUs and is largely due to Intel graphics drivers. These are a few solutions that can fix « Fatal Error — Exception in Exception Handler » error messages.
- Run the game in compatibility mode
- Adjust graphics settings NVIDIA Optimus
- Install DirectX End-User Runtime (June 2010)
- Disable initial setting in game
- Install the driver for the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400

Run the game in compatibility mode
Running games in compatibility mode is one fix that some Command and Conquer 3 players have confirmed to work for them. You can do this by opening the game folder in File Explorer and right clicking on the game file to open the window below. nine0003

- Then on this tab select the option « Run this program in compatibility mode».
- Select Windows 8 from the drop down menu.
- Press the Apply and OK buttons to save the newly selected settings.
2. Configure NVIDIA Optimus Graphics Settings
Some laptops and desktops have more than one graphics card. Thus, the game may start with an integrated Intel graphics card instead of an NVIDIA GPU. Many players believe that switching the graphics card to an NVIDIA alternative fixes the exception handler issue.
You can do this by tweaking Optimus Graphics settings as follows.
- Right click on the Windows desktop and select NVIDIA Control Panel» in the context menu.
- Next, expand 3D Settings and click Manage 3D Settings .
- You can now select the Global Settings or Program Settings tab. Select the Global Settings tab to apply the new settings to all games.
- Select the high performance NVIDIA processor from the Preferred GPU drop-down menu.
- Press button Apply to save the newly selected settings.

3. Install DirectX End-User Runtime (June 2010)
The game may require an older version of DirectX to run. Additionally, some players have confirmed that installing DirectX End-User Runtime (June 2010) fixes the exception handler bug. Here’s how you can add DirectX End-User Runtime (June 2010) to Windows.

More specifically, some have fixed the error by installing the Intel® R Graphics HD 4400 driver, which can be downloaded from this website page by clicking the Download button for the driver compatible with your platform. Then you can install the driver as follows.
- Open Device Manager from the Win+X menu by pressing the Win+X hotkey.
- Click Device Manager, to open its window as shown below.
- Double-click the Video adapters category to expand the list of graphics cards.
- Right-click on Intel HD Graphics and select Update Driver from the menu to open the window shown directly below.
- Then select Browse my computer for driver software, to open the options below.
- Click « Let me choose» from the list of device drivers on my computer, to select the device driver.
- Click the Install from Disk button, and then click the Browse button to select the downloaded driver file.
- Click Open , OK and Next to install. nine0006
- Then restart Windows after adding the driver.
Even if installing the Intel(R) HD Graphics 4400 driver does fix the exception handler bug, it is still an outdated driver that may cause other gaming issues and reduce graphic quality. Thus, this is not an ideal solution.
So if you don’t currently update the Intel driver, update your graphics card driver to the latest version. If this does not resolve the issue, install the Intel® R Graphics 4400.
6. Add NVIDIA graphics card to Intel HD Desktop
Error « Exception in exception handler » is most common for desktops and laptops with Intel graphics cards. So adding a new NVIDIA graphics card to Intel HD desktops will probably fix the issue. Of course, you can’t upgrade a laptop GPU; but the new NVIDIA desktop graphics card will do. If you’re upgrading your graphics card, you can also opt for a GPU that really improves game graphics. nine0003

7. Use the Windows System Restore tool
If the game that returns a handler error message was running a few months ago, the System Restore tool might come in handy. With this utility, you can restore Windows to a date when the game was working fine, which might fix the error.
Restoring Windows will roll back updated drivers and other updates. Please note that Windows Restore also removes software installed after the selected restore point. Here’s how you can use System Restore in Windows 10.
- Open Run by pressing Windows key + R.
- Type «rstrui» into «Run» to open System Restore.
- Click Next, and then select Show more option restore points.
- Select a system restore point that is before the exception handler error, but not when you first played the game. If there is no restore point that precedes the error message, System Restore probably won’t solve the problem. nine0006
- Click Next and Finish to confirm the selected restore point.
