  • Depth sorting for use in 3-dimensional computer shading and texturing systems

    Patent number: 6839058

Abstract: A method and apparatus for automatically sorting translucent object data in a 3-dimensional computer shading texturing system first stores a list of objects to be shaded and textured. For each pixel, for each object in turn, it is determined whether an object in the list is further from an image plane than a current deepest object for that pixel. Data is stored for at least the deepest object in the list. The pixel is then shaded and textured for this object and the stored object is then discarded from the list. This is repeated until pixels have been shaded for all objects in the list.

  • Video/graphics memory system

    Patent number: 6091429

Abstract: A video/graphics memory system includes a memory device (30) having a memory core (14) and first and serial registers (16, 36). The memory device thus has a random-access port (24) for graphics data, a first serial access port (22) for image output to a display, and an auxiliary or second serial port (32) for input and output of video signal data. A single memory thus stores both video and graphics data, while the processor still has access to the random access port of the memory. Two video outputs can be provided simultaneously, or the data withdrawn through the auxiliary port can be subject to processing and then written back into the memory. In alternative arrangements, instead of using triple-ported RAM, the auxiliary port is provided by the use of external multiplexing circuitry.

  • Ray tracing method and apparatus for projecting rays through an object represented by a set of infinite surfaces

    Patent number: 5729672

Abstract: A method and apparatus for shading three-dimensional images for display on a screen by displaying each object as a group of infinite surfaces, projecting rays into the image, determining the location of the intersection of each ray with each surface and determining whether any intersected surface is visible at an elementary, pixel, level. Shading that occurs as a in-image light projection is analyzed by designating the generated light as a light volume determining the intersection of the ray with the light volume, and shading the pixel point as a function of the relationship between the visible surface and the light volume. The rate of shading is enhanced by dividing the screen into a number of sub-regions and determining the location of the intersection of each object contained with the sub-region through the rays projected into the sub region. The size of the sub-regions is set by determining a bounding volume for each object on the display screen and subdividing the display based on the bounding volumes.

  • Ray tracing method and apparatus for projecting rays through an object represented by a set of infinite surfaces

    Patent number: 5596685

Abstract: Each object in a 3-dimensional image to be displayed may be represented by a set of infinite surfaces. Each elementary area of a screen on which the image is to be displayed has a ray projected through it onto the 3-dimensional image. The location of the intersection of the projected ray with each surface is then determined and from these locations it is determined whether any intersected surface is visible at that elementary area. The elementary area is then shaded for display in dependence on the result of the determination.

AMD on Wednesday promoted five of its executives to higher positions in a bid to honor their achievements and support the company’s long-term growth goals. Indirectly, the promotions demonstrate the company’s current growth opportunities that are considered as top priority for now.

«Our high-performance products and long-term roadmaps have placed AMD on a significant growth trajectory,» said Dr. Lisa Su, AMD president and CEO. «Aligning and expanding our senior leadership team around our highest-priority growth opportunities will continue the momentum we have built across our business in 2021 and beyond.»

Three people that got promoted to senior vice presidents are directly responsible for CPU, GPU, product technology architecture, and technology as well as product engineering. All of these activities are tremendously important as AMD is about to start executing multiple strategically important projects and initiatives, including those focused on upcoming CPU (Zen 4, 5), GPU (RDNA3, CDNA2), and interconnection (Infinity) architectures; next-generation chip packaging; and Xilinx integration. Promoting people ensures that they stay with the company, which is crucial for timely and predictable execution.

AMD’s new senior vice presidents are:

  • Martin Ashton — SVP of Graphics Architecture and Radeon Technologies Group Intellectual Property (IP) — has been leading development of graphics processor architectures and IP for gaming, datacenter, and mobile products, since 2018. Previously he worked at Intel and at Imagination Technologies.
  • Mark Fuselier — SVP of Technology and Product Engineering — is responsible for foundry technology end-to-end engineering of new products. Essentially, he is leading AMD’s manufacturing operations.
  • Sam Naffziger — SVP, Corporate Fellow and Product Technology Architect — has spent decades developing CPUs at AMD and Intel and whose most recent achievements are AMD’s chiplet architecture as well as low-power features. Today, his focus are product technology choices for the best power/performance/area combination to maximize product competitiveness, efficiency, and cost.

In addition to promoting its technology executives, AMD also promoted two of its business leaders, who will also get a pay raise:

  • Darren Grasby — EVP and Chief Sales Officer — has been leading AMD’s sales since 2007. As a result of Mr. Grasby’s promotion, AMD boosted his annual base pay from £410,000 to £450,000 (or $561,700 to $616,500), and increased his target yearly bonus opportunity from 100% of his base salary to 125% of annual base salary.
  • Devinder Kumar — EVP and Chief Financial Officer — joined AMD in 1984 and has been the company’s CFO for over eight years. Devider Kumar will also receive a pay raise from $580,000 to $625,000 per year, whereas his annual bonus opportunity will increase from 100% of annual salary to 125% of year base salary.

As AMD will begin absorbing Xilinx in the coming quarters, so it will be important to ensure consistency in its business team execution, which is why it seems to be the right time to promote CFO and CSO.

Pay Raises for CTO and C&G Leader

As well as promoting select officers, AMD also increased base salary of Mark Papermaster, Chief Technology Officer of the company, from $625,000 to $675,000. Also, the company increased annual bonus opportunity of Papermaster and Rick Bergman, EVP of Computing and Graphics Business Group, from 100% of their base salaries to 125% of their annual base salaries.

MOVIE CLUB 19.00 BOBBY ***

Drama, an interesting experience of restoring a historical tragedy. The action takes place in the Los Angeles hotel «Ambassador», where on June 1968, at the height of his presidential race, Robert Kennedy was assassinated. Having visited there almost forty years later, the director imagined how different people with different destinies were drawn to one fatal point where the murder would take place. Kennedy himself is not in the film, he is represented by footage from the chronicle, and the film, obeying the idea of fatalism that inspired the author, tracks how this day developed for the hotel workers and its guests. In the interweaving of micronovels, a picture of the psychological state of American society in those days is formed. Interested in an unusual undertaking, they agreed to take part in the project, playing episodes, stars of the first magnitude: Anthony Hopkins, Helen Hunt, Joshua Jackson, Harry Belafonte, Laurence Fishburne, Ashton Kutcher, Shia LaBeouf, Demi Moore, Martin Sheen, Sharon Stone, Elijah Wood. Directed by Emilio Estevez. USA, 2006.

Tom Cruise as a rich young media mogul and women’s dreams. But, having once met the most beautiful woman on the planet (Penelope Cruz), his hero will pay dearly for it. Why Tom Cruise will wear a mask for most of the film, why reality and dreams will mix for him, why the terrible walks next to the beautiful — these questions the film skillfully intrigues the viewer, it is interesting to watch, and the copy turned out to be not much worse than the original. Cameron Diaz, Kurt Russell, Jason Lee also starred. Directed by Cameron Crowe. USA, 2001.

THE DEPARTS ***

Thriller, remake of the 2002-2003 Hong Kong trilogy. «Double Castling». In Boston, the Irish group is in charge, and the police are collecting evidence against its leader, introducing their own man, Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio), into the mafia. But the mafioso Costello managed to launch his «rat» Sullivan (Matt Damon) into the ranks of the cops. Both the mafia and the police already suspect that a spy is among them. Under the hands of Martin Scorsese, this intricate plot took on the harsh breath of an American gangster epic. The role of Costello is played by Jack Nicholson with his characteristic diabolical charm. The top three are perfectly accompanied by Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin and Mark Wahlberg. 4 Oscars. USA, 2006.

1408 ***

A psycho-thriller based on Stephen King’s story about a writer who devoted himself to debunking myths about ghosts. He arrives at New York’s Dolphin Hotel, where room 1408 is infamous — in the hotel’s century-old history, 56 people have died in this room under mysterious circumstances. Despite the manager’s warning: «No one there can stand even an hour!», The writer insists on his own. Full of skepticism, the hero ironically listens to the strange sounds that keep him awake. He still has no idea what awaits him. The film is not so much frightening as it reproduces a certain state of the human psyche, when it is no longer possible to separate imagination from reality. Cast: John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson, Mary McCormack. Directed by Mikael Hafstrom. USA, 2007.

The history of Sony Pictures Animation

Looking at the documents describing the structure and history of mergers, acquisitions, divisions and reorganizations of companies that are part of the Sony conglomerate, you want to run away screaming without looking back. The description of the history of Columbia Pictures alone, which has now become part of the Japanese empire, deserves a detailed story, and after all, under the umbrella with a capital S, the famous Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (the owner of the rights to Bondiana) and other interesting neighbors who still have a place are hiding in our anthology. Now let’s turn to a young, but already loudly declared member of a large family — the Sony Pictures Animation studio.

The direct ancestor of Sony Pictures Animation is Sony Pictures Imageworks, a special visual effects and computer animation division created in 1992. With the help of the specialists of this company, a lot of films saw the light, from The Last Action Hero and Speed to Watchmen and The Amazing Spider-Man. However, in 2001, Sony experienced such severe financial difficulties that it was ready to part with its «computers». The sale of the company was not realized for a banal reason — there was no buyer willing to pay the required amount. And in the meantime, Shrek and Monsters, Inc. appeared on the screens — films that made people talk about animation with respect. Yes, and Sony Pictures Imageworks itself did not sit idly by, in 2002 their next creation, Stuart Little 2, saw the light. The potential has not yet been exhausted, but required some new space for implementation. Sony management decided that the animators should be separated into a separate company with the uncomplicated name Sony Pictures Animation.

The first year the two companies worked hand in hand, first on the long-term construction of Astroboy (which Sony wanted to see on screens back in the late nineties, but as a result, the film in a roundabout way was embodied only in 2009 and was safely ignored), and then over a couple of short films that tested the skill. The buildup could not last long, so already in 2002, Sony Pictures Animation prepared to go on a solo voyage, announcing five full-length animated films at once.

The first chick was «Hunting Season» — a goofy family comedy about a bear who has lived all his life in a circus, but suddenly finds himself in the forest, where adventures await him in the company of an importunate deer. With the help of Martin Lawrence and Ashton Kutcher, who voiced the main characters, the tape managed to collect exactly the same amount in the States as was spent on production — $ 85 million. But the worldwide rental brought another 112 million. Not a bad result for the first pancake! But Sony Pictures Animation could not develop the success of its firstborn — the sequel was left without its main voices and in 2008 went straight to video. But this is across the ocean, and we had both a sequel and a triquel released in 2010 in cinemas.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves, it’s much more interesting to turn to the second picture of the studio. By the summer of 2007, Sony Pictures Animation prepared for the viewer a film about singing penguins Catch the Wave! and was already preparing to skim off the cream, if not for the “sneaky” from a competitor — six months earlier, Warner Bros. released on the screens «Happy Feet» and the theme of singing and dancing penguins was closed. «Secondary» «Catch the wave!» I had to be content with condescending grins, 150 million dollars in fees (against 380 million from competitors) and an Oscar nomination, which was taken away by Pixar’s Ratatouille.

Here one should give up, especially since in 2008, the animation project of Jon Favreau «Neanderthals», which had been in development for four years, died without seeing the light of day. Favreau seemed to be much more interested in Iron Man, but Sony Pictures Animation was almost left with nothing. A proven method came to the rescue: to turn to the most childish that is in any person — to fool around and hooliganism. How many times were you told as a child not to mess around at the table and not to throw food? But what if food is literally pouring from the sky, and a giant meatball can become the cause of the traditional Hollywood apocalypse? «Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs» from the writers of the hugely popular sitcom How I Met Your Mother lured in the fall of 2009year to the cinema and children and their parents — almost a quarter of a billion dollars collected at the box office. Sony Pictures Animation has finally gotten rid of the ugly duckling label.

But the studio planned to finally establish itself on the market in 2011-2012. The work was carried out in four directions at once — a traditional Christmas fairy tale, plasticine classics, horror for children and a project that combines animation and live actors. At least one was supposed to shoot, and the anxiety of the studio bosses was dispelled by the very first release — in the summer of 2011, the whole planet became blue-skinned. No, Avatar has nothing to do with it — the Smurfs have taken over the world. The combination of cartoons and live actors in The Smurfs, which is not too common on the screens, came in handy. And coupled with heroes who have fans all over the world, half a billion dollars in total fees do not look at all surprising. The studio is firmly on its feet and has a franchise at its disposal that can lay golden eggs for many years to come (the sequel is out on screens now, and the third film is scheduled for 2015).

Against this background, the New Year’s release of «Santa’s Secret Service» went almost unnoticed. With very high ratings from viewers and critics, his fees did not strike the imagination, and in Russia he was completely lost in the clouds of dust raised by the traditional New Year’s Battle. Even less financial success was achieved by Pirates! A gang of losers” — the viewer, apparently, was somewhat unprepared for the classic puppet animation. Although the audience appreciated the specific rough humor of director Peter Lord, and the director even mentioned that he could take on a sequel.

The latest release by Sony Pictures Animation to date is the animated family comedy Monsters on Vacation. It is especially dear to us because of the direct participation in its creation of our former compatriot — the film was directed by Genndy Tartakovsky. The picture has been in production since 2006, until, after passing five directors, it fell into the hands of Tartakovsky. Genndy rewrote the script, redrawn the characters, giving them disproportionate cartoonish forms, and brought the style closer to the classic Tex Avery cartoons. The result is a record box office for September in America, the largest fees in the history of the studio in the United States and the continuation promised for 2015.
