The Antec MicroFusion 350 is the micro ATX version of Antec’s awesome Fusion HTPC chassis, which won an award in Custom PC Magazine (bit-tech‘s sister publication) a few years back. Rather than being a carbon copy (or steel as the case may be — no pun intended) of its bigger brother, the MicroFusion has undergone a few design adjustments. The most obvious difference is that the MicroFusion features less brushed aluminium on the fascia which gives the case a two-tone, somewhat retro feel.
It features three 80mm fans all of which have three speed options which are selectable via a small switch that protrudes from each one — we found all but the slowest setting unacceptably noisy for a home theatre case and even the slowest setting wasn’t what we’d call silent.
Two fans are situated in the main chamber of the case and are fitted in an exhaust configuration. This leaves the task of intake to the third fan and your CPU cooler which, depending on your motherboard, should line up at least partially with the ventilation holes atop the case.

The third fan resides in the single internal 3.5in bay so your storage should see some decent airflow. If you needed to fit a second hard disk here, there is plenty of space for two with a little modding to hold the second in place though officially there is only one 3.5in bay. In addition to providing good cooling for your hard drive, Antec has used rubber spacers on the underside which should help to keep vibrations to a minimum.
The two feet at the front of the case are fashioned in silver aluminium to keep things looking smart while the feet at the back are more like grippy rubber stoppers. These will stop the chassis from slipping around while you’re spring cleaning your living room, or rummaging around behind your TV, or something.

The MicroFusion is equipped with a 350W 80-Plus certified power supply fitted with an 80mm fan which exhausts hot air directly out the side of the case and provides plenty of connectivity for a fully fitted system inside the chassis. Our test kit comprised of one SATA hard disk, one SATA optical drive, a micro-ATX motherboard and a graphics card and there were still two Molex connectors and a 5V connector spare.
Because of the MicroFusion’s small dimensions, the expansion slots are half-height so you will need a half-height graphics card to build a complete system inside this case. Most of you will likely stick with an integrated graphics chipset, but if you have a half-height card but the bracket is full-height, removing the bracket is as easy as unscrewing the bolts either side of the outputs and you’re in business.

In true Antec fashion, the partition around the hard disk bay has a couple of cunningly positioned holes cut into it. These allow you to route the cables conveniently underneath the hard disk and over to the 5.25in bay where they can be unobtrusively tucked away underneath.
Motherboard installation is slightly unusual in that it doesn’t incorporate the usual method of spacer bolts and screws. There are spacer bolts but only three are included and all are to one side. What’s more, they’re also inverted with the thread protruding up through the motherboard.
The rest of the motherboard is supported by the bottom of the case where the screw holes have been raised up like little mole hills to support the motherboard. We’re not sure the merit of this system but it didn’t cause us any bother either.

The hard disk and optical drive are installed into a removable housing which then slots neatly in place. We found it easiest to make the optical drive the last thing to install into the case so as to not obstruct your cable tidying during the build.
Because of the position of the DIMM slots on our test motherboard, we were unable to install memory with oversized heat spreaders such as Corsair Dominator or any memory with anything other than a standard heat spreader. The problem comes from the SATA cables protruding from the optical drive, leaving just enough space for a standard pair of DIMMs.
Being largely made from steel, the MicroFusion is as sturdy as a rhinoceros and we had no troubles with sharp corners or edges during the build. One problem that we did have when firing up the rig though was the noise, as we mentioned on the first page. The fans aren’t the loudest in the world, but in our opinion they were unacceptably noisy for an HTPC case, hence why we have only tested with them on the lowest setting. Having fan speed adjustment is one thing, but it actually being at all useful is another thing entirely.

The screen displays information such as what track is playing and it also displays hardware statistics such as memory usage when you’re not using the iMedian software, which isn’t particularly useful but it is a cool touch.
The iMedian software is not only easy to use but also very easy on the eye unlike the unpolished and unintuitive rubbish that more often than not ships with the majority of TV tuners. However, you do have to add media files manually to the correct folder before you can flick through them using the interface.

In addition to playing media, iMedian will also allow you to execute tasks that you might like to do in your living room wearing a dressing gown on a Saturday morning such as check the weather and RSS news feeds. The remote control is very small and ultimately very basic, but it does the job of allowing you to manipulate the software and browse around and play your media.

plasma-hydrogen waste processing for
production of heat and power resources
Purpose and characteristics of the market
Implementation of efficient resource-saving technologies
deep processing of renewable hydrocarbon raw materials and
waste is one of the most important areas of development in the world
present time
The goal of the project is to create a pilot plant for
plasma-hydrogen processing of waste for production
heat and power resources.
with the possibility of subsequent
replication and scaling for the organization
domestic industry for waste processing and export
supplies along with the possibility of increasing additional
production volumes. Technical complexity and high cost
connection to gas and power networks makes this project
the most relevant for energy-deficient regions of the Russian Federation.
The technology is competitive both in the growing
Russian and global markets.
Competitive advantages
• Compliance of the project with the best world analogues and
exceeding them in a number of key parameters.
• Perfection of all processes and technologies, possibility
complete environmentally friendly processing of solid municipal
waste (both newly generated MSW and those that are up to 15 years
at landfills).
• Relatively low level of capital investments, short terms
construction (up to 12 months) and payback.
• Ability to use «administrative» and
organizational resources that allow, in accordance with
order of the President of the Russian Federation No.
Pr-574 dated 08.03.2011
receive support from the relevant structures of the federal and
regional level, as well as the discipline of «execution»
project decisions.
Technology description
The proposed technology is based on a 2-stage
the process of gasification of household waste, consisting of:
• blocks of drying at a temperature not higher than 120°С;
• catalytic gasification reactor in hydrogen-
containing gas (with minimum air supply) at
temperatures of 650-750°C (in the upper zone of the reactor) and 1500°C (in
lower zone of the reactor), improved by introducing
modern technologies for high-speed destruction of hydrocarbons for
production of medium-calorific fuel gas and neutralization
present environmentally hazardous products.
The resulting fuel gas will be used in
modernized gas piston power units for
generation of electrical and thermal energy. There will also
apply modern installations for grinding solid
raw materials, efficient gas and water treatment.
Process steps
• Reception of raw materials (municipal solid waste).
• Primary crushing and subsequent grinding of fractions to
5-10 mm.
• Saturation of raw pulp with catalysts and
neutralizers, drying at 120°C, heat treatment (2
staged gasification): first at a temperature of 650-750 ° C in
oxygen-free environment, then — steam plasma-catalytic
gasification of hot crushed coke-ash residue at
1500°C.
• Quenching of the vapor-gas mixture, subsequent purification of all gas
streams.
• Cogeneration of electrical and thermal energy.
• Reagent and filtration treatment of water effluents for their
discharge to the relief or treatment facilities of the consumer with
partial return to technology.
3D model of the pilot plant
Technology Benefits
• Technological uniqueness that allows without the use of
manual sorting simultaneously process mixed raw materials
any composition, including landfill waste — with
production of medium-calorific fuel gas and its
application in adapted series-produced
cogeneration plants with generation of heat and power resources.
• Ecological cleanliness of the process, the waste of which is
only purified water effluents and gases from cogeneration plants
newcomer.
• High temperature treatment of waste at 1500°C.
breaks down molecules of dangerous elements to low molecular weight
components, which completely neutralizes ecotoxicants.
• Autonomy of the installation with self-sufficiency of the necessary
heat and energy resources, allowing the possibility of transportation from
polygon to polygon.
