AMD Opteron 1381 Processor Overview

The Opteron 1381 is a server processor model from AMD based on the Suzuka architecture. In processor markets since 2009of the year.

six to two cores

The first signs that AMD is preparing for the announcement of new models of Opteron appeared
last week. The first two days of June were busy for AMD in terms of the announcement of new processors: yesterday six-core processors Opteron (Istanbul) were presented, and today the range of AMD products was replenished with desktop processors with different numbers of cores.

Let’s start with the six-core Opteron processors, since they came out a few hours earlier. As you know, Istanbul processors are compatible with Socket F motherboards, which makes it easy to upgrade existing server systems. According to the manufacturer, Istanbul processors allow to increase the ratio of performance and power consumption by 34% compared to Shanghai processors. Let’s examine the range of Istanbul processors:

  • Opteron 8435 (2.6 GHz) -> $2649;
  • Opteron 8431 (2.4 GHz) -> $2149;
  • Opteron 2435 (2.6 GHz) -> $989;
  • Opteron 2431 (2.4 GHz) -> $698;
  • Opteron 2427 (2.2 GHz) -> $455.

All six-core Opteron processors shown have an ACP of 75W or less, and HyperTransport 3. 0 bus speeds up to 4800MHz. Each core has 128 KB of the first level cache and 512 KB of the second level cache, the 6 MB cache of the third level is divided between six cores. The built-in memory controller operates at a frequency of 2200 MHz. The nominal core voltage is 1.3 V. AMD promised to introduce Istanbul processors in SE, HE and EE versions in the second half of the year.

At the same time, three new Socket AM3 Opteron processors appeared in the AMD price list:

  • Opteron 1381 (2.5GHz, 75W) -> $189.

Notably, these are the first Socket AM3 Opteron processors. They differ from their desktop relatives by the need to use memory modules with the ECC error correction function. These processors can also work in Socket AM2/AM2+ motherboards.

Prices for other Opteron processors have not changed since last Monday. All new Opteron processors are based on the D0 stepping. AMD’s new desktop processors were introduced today:

  • Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition -> two cores, 2 x 512 KB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, 3.1 GHz, TDP = 80 W, free multiplier, price $102;
  • Phenom II X2 545 -> two cores, 2 x 512 KB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, 3.0 GHz, TDP = 80 W, OEM;
  • Phenom II X4 905e -> four cores, 4 x 512 KB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, 2.5 GHz, TDP = 65 W, price $195;
  • Phenom II X4 900e -> four cores, 4 x 512 KB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, 2.4 GHz, TDP = 65 W, OEM;
  • Phenom II X3 705e -> three cores, 3 x 512 KB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, 2.5 GHz, TDP = 65 W, price $125;
  • Phenom II X3 700e -> three cores, 3 x 512 KB L2 cache, 6 MB L3 cache, 2.4 GHz, TDP = 65 W, OEM.

All of these processors are Socket AM3 and have a HyperTransport 3.0 bus frequency of 4000 MHz. Three processors from this list are intended for the needs of the OEM market, so they are not mentioned in the official price list.
