Catalyst removal and lambda probe snag

Each unit has its own resource. I recently determined what is the resource of the catalyst (or, to put it correctly, the catalytic converter — exhaust gas converter) of my Accord. The resource turned out to be equal to 155 thousand km., Which, according to statistics, is quite normal. But this is if we admit the unlikely thing that the previous owners of my car did not rewind the mileage before selling. If the run was unwound, then I generally got a successful long-lived catalyst.

Whatever it was, the problem had to be solved. The problem manifested itself with the following symptoms:

— annoying rattling sound from under the bottom when gas is added;

— unstable idling, somewhat low idle speed;

— burnt corrugation.

There were three ways to solve the problem:

1) buy a new catalyst;

2) simply remove the worn one;

3) replace the catalyst with a flame arrester or, as it is also called a stronger.

Each option had its pros and cons.

1) New catalytic converter.

Cons: expensive, very expensive. Non-original catalyst — from $500. Original — at the price of live Zhiguli on the go.

Pros: No problems after installation. Everything works and no diagnostic errors, no burning Check engine.

2) Replacing the catalyst with a piece of pipe or simply removing the honeycomb from the housing.

Cons: very likely error and Check engine; deterioration of working conditions and an early failure of the muffler, where exhaust gases of too high a temperature will break through; unpleasant exhaust sound

Pros: cheap.

3) Replacing the catalyst with a stronger.

Cons: again an error and Check engine.

Pros: inexpensive; increase in engine power is possible.

After evaluating all the options, I settled on the third one. On the one hand, it’s cheap. On the other hand, there is only one possible nuisance. In addition, it was still necessary to change the burnt corrugation. And I hoped to avoid trouble. I heard that when installing a stronger, a certain spacer is installed under the second lambda probe, which will help to avoid an error.

It really didn’t cost much. Work — $ 15, corrugation — $ 20, and the stronger cost nothing, because it turned out that the old catalysts were taken to the scrap (platinum, after all). Advertisements I think can be found in the newspaper in any major city. I got about $35 for mine. The Stronger cost the same.

But with the lambda probe (oxygen sensor), everything turned out to be not so rosy (the threaded part of its seat was cut out of the catalyst and welded into the stronger. Then the lambda itself was screwed in there). The specialists at the service authoritatively stated that they had long ceased to weld spacers for sensors, because this does not guarantee anything. Check engine lights up quite often even with a spacer. Indeed, the principle of operation of two oxygen sensors (before and after the catalyst) is based on a significant difference in their readings due to this very catalyst. In such a situation, the spacer, of course, can have some effect on the second sensor, but it is not worth counting on it to completely deceive the onboard computer. Therefore, it remained to rely on luck.

The work is over, I start the engine — the Check engine light is off. It’s certainly nice, but it’s too early to rejoice. The computer still needs time to analyze the operation of the sensors. What really pleased me was the changed nature of the motor. He began to spin subjectively livelier, and work noticeably smoother.

And it was really too early to rejoice about the sensors. A couple of days later, the light came on. Driving with the Check engine light on is not an option for me personally. Therefore, I immediately set about solving this quite expected problem.

Having dug heartily on the Internet, remembering the remnants of my knowledge in radio electronics, I came to the following conclusions.

Just removing the error is useless, because it won’t last long.

Reflashing a computer is not known where and is rumored to be very expensive.

Buying an electronic emulator of the second oxygen sensor is also not a cheap pleasure. Everything starts from $100, you need to order and wait. And again, there is no 100% guarantee of results.

The blue line on the waveform is the signal from the 1st oxygen sensor. The yellow line is the signal from the 2nd sensor, it is of a lower level and without bursts and dips. This is the picture with a working catalytic converter. If the catalyst is removed, then the signal from the 2nd sensor will be similar to the signal from the 1st sensor. This is quickly recognized by the onboard computer, and the result is error 0420 and a burning red light on the instrument panel. Conclusion — you need to correct the signal from the 2nd sensor. The solution is a serial R-C filter. The resistor will lower the signal level, and the capacitor will trim it.

Ask your radio shop or radio market for details. There are only two details.

Next we climb under the car. There we find the 2nd lambda probe. On a Honda, 4 wires fit it (see the diagram above): Blue, White and two Black. Two black ones are power supply to the sensor heating coil. We do not touch them. If these wires are of a different color — check the resistance, it will be very small for the heating coil.

We cut the blue wire going to the sensor. We get two ends of the blue wire. To the end that remained connected to the sensor, we connect the black wire according to the photo with twists. To the second end of the blue wire we connect the red wire according to the photo with twists.

We do not cut the white wire going to the oxygen sensor, but simply expose it in a small segment. We connect the green wire to the bare area according to the photo with twists.

Solder and insulate the connections. We securely fasten the decoy so that nothing moves away due to vibrations.
