How to install Hackintosh on AMD Ryzen. Impressions of using

Earlier I wrote a material about how Magic Trackpad 2 performs on Windows 10. Now it’s time to share my impressions of using the trackpad on Mac OS Mojave. It took me about a week to superficially study the issue of installing Hackintosh on ordinary computers (computers that usually only install Windows). I admit, I don’t know everything yet, but my knowledge allowed me to do a number of actions and get a working solution as a result. My computer is equipped with AMD Ryzen 1600 processor, AMD Radeon RX560 graphics card. It is imperative that you have an AMD graphics card, because Apple does not support Nvidia graphics cards in the latest versions of its OS. Another option is a video card built into the motherboard, but this solution will be more difficult to set up and slower to operate.

How do I install a hackintosh on an AMD Ryzen computer?

Let’s define what a Hackintosh is. This is the work of a group of programmers — or you can call them hackers — they took apart the bootloader created by Apple and were able to emulate it on regular hardware. Why is Apple iron unusual, you ask? Answer: the company itself produces motherboards for its iMac, MacBook, Mac Mini — these motherboards have a built-in bootloader (chip) that is responsible for the operation of the computer (consider that this is an analogue of the BIOS). It checks that the technique is definitely from Apple, and only then allows MacOS to be loaded. So, guys with hands from the right place were able to write an emulator of this chip that runs on regular motherboards, and thus, by tricking Apple, they can run MacOS on regular computers.

There are several bootloaders, the most famous are Clover or Open Core (there are others), but the most popular is Clover.

Meet Clover

First of all, real Macs only work with Intel processors. Until recently, Hackintosh could only be installed on computers with Intel processors. But literally in the last year there has been a small revolution and the guys working on Hackintosh have made it possible to install MacOS on AMD processors.

  • 3 Installing Hackintosh
  • 4 Quick guide for installing Hackintosh on AMD Ryzen
  • 5 Will it work on Hackintosh?

Problems with Hackintosh

The easiest and surest way to build your Hackintosh is to go to the tonymacx86.com forum in the Golden Builds section, choose the configuration you like there, buy exactly the same components, download the theme creator files from the forum and run everything without «dancing with a tambourine». The most important thing is the motherboard, if someone has already assembled Hackintosh on it, you are with 99% chance you will collect too.

One of our employees followed this path and assembled a video editing computer based on Intel i9 9900K with 32 gigabytes of RAM (3200 MHz), Samsung 970 Pro NVME hard drive, Radeon 5700XT video card, Designare z390 motherboard with built-in ports Thunderbolt. It turned out to be an excellent machine that is not inferior to the new generation Mac Pro, but for much less money. If you close your eyes to the fact that even such an assembly in setup was wildly difficult. There are pluses — everything works on Mac OS Catalina, the speed of video editing compared to the 2018 MacBook Pro has grown tenfold, and this is hundreds of hours of savings per year.

10.15.2 is installed

The main disadvantage of Hackintosh is that you won't be able to update the operating system. Each update may or may not run on your computer, in which case you will have to start from scratch. This is a huge minus, but many are willing to put up with it.

You may not be able to boot the installation, after installation the sound may not work, the Internet may not work, there may be problems with the graphics. Installing Hackintosh always involves choosing the right hardware first, so if you have any Phenom with an Nvidia graphics card, I wouldn’t even try. In addition, laptop owners may have even more problems, because, as a rule, Wi-Fi does not work, there may be problems with the screen, and so on.

Black screens, lots of incomprehensible lines, long nights of googling. This is most likely what awaits you when installing Hackintosh, if you do not follow the path of copying someone else’s build. And then searching for drivers, editing drivers (they are called kext files) and other delights of hackers (just kidding).

That “magic” Envi card

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are a different story, AirDrop, iMessage and other services are tied to them. There are special cards (PCI) for Hackintosh that will definitely support AirDrop and iMessage.

Hackintosh experience

Mojave shows off all its good stuff on a 4K monitor

I’m absolutely thrilled! This is probably the only system that looks so cool on a 4K monitor. After Windows, where half of the interface is blurred and programs are not adapted to high resolution, MacOS looks just fabulous. I didn’t have to mess around with scaling, the system itself perfectly adjusted to my screen size and resolution. There were no problems with sound, graphics and the Internet — everything works like clockwork!

Installing Hackintosh

It’s worth starting with the fact that there are a lot of options for installing MacOS. Initially, I tried to create bootable flash drives with Clover already installed without any settings and, of course, this did not lead to anything good.

All useful instructions, files, configs can be found at amd-osx.com. I tried to create a bootable USB using AMD Vanilla’s instructions, but I had problems with gibMacOS not seeing Python. You may not have such a problem, or you can solve it, in which case you can use this guide.

This concludes the lyrical part and goes on to describe my personal installation experience.

What do we need?

  • BDUtility is a utility for creating a bootable MacOS flash drive from under Windows. You can download it from the official site.
  • TransMac is a program that can copy files from Windows to media formatted with MacOS. She is paid. You can download it on the official website. Advanced users can easily find a way around the restrictions, but we still recommend buying the software.
  • Paragon Hard Disk Manager
  • Clover bootloader and kernel patch
  • MacOS Mojave

Someone may need additional kext. You can find them here.

Brief instructions for installing Hackintosh on AMD Ryzen

Insert a flash drive. Open BDUtility. In the menu, click on Option->Configuration . In the window that opens, click on the button Check Now . The program will check if the Clover version is up to date (Internet connection required). After that, we check that the FAT32 format is selected in the Format Options area (the first drop-down list in the column). We press OK .

BD Utility interface

In the main window, select the flash drive by clicking on it (you need to select the USB flash drive, not the branches) and click on the button Format , then a small window will pop up, also click OK . The formatting process will begin, system windows will appear asking you to format the USB flash drive — always press Cancel . After formatting, the program will create a flash drive with two partitions — for the Clover bootloader and for MacOS files.

In the BDUtility menu, click on Tools->Extract HFS(HFS+) partition from DMG-files , in the window that opens, select the system image (in this case, Mojave), namely, SharedSupport->BaseSystem.dmg . Another window will open, you need to select the location where the image will be extracted. You can create a separate folder for this, for example, Hackintosh . Created? Now select it in the window and press OK . Next, a terminal will open, where the process of extracting system files from the image to the previously created folder Hackintosh will begin. After completion, a small window will open — click OK . In BDUtility, in the main window, select our flash drive and look for the Part2 subsection in the branches — select it and click on Restore . A window will open where you need to select the previously extracted file 4.hfs in the folder Hackintosh . The process of writing the file to the USB flash drive will begin.

Open Paragon Hard Disk Manager. From above, select the blue tab Partition Manager, in the main window of the tab My Disc and partitions we find our flash drive, move the mouse cursor to the right edge of the Apple HFS partition and drag to the end so that this section takes up 100% of the flash drive space. In the window that appears, click OK and then at the top of the program click on Apply, a window will appear — click Yes .

Opening My computer , select disk Clover . Next EFI-> CLOVER and delete the folder DRIVER64UEFI and DRIVER32UEFI (some of them may not be), delete config.plist. Open the previously downloaded CLOVER files and copy them to the previously opened flash drive folder EFI->CLOVER . We confirm the replacement. The copied files contain the necessary drivers for normal operation.

Go to the previously downloaded folder AMD_Vanilla-master . Depending on the processor, you need to select the folder 15h_16h or 17h. Under Ryzen fit 17h. For old AMD FX / A processors — 15h_16h. In my case, this is 17h, so I copied 9 from this folder0607 config.plist to flash drive folder EFI->CLOVER .

TransMac interface

Opening TransMac . Select Tools->Settings->Disk Drivers/Images . Click on the selector Access non-removable drivers read/write . We press OK . In the left window of TransMac, select macOS Base System->Install MacOS Mojave.app->Contents on the flash drive. Next, in the right field, click on the right mouse button and select Copy Here . In the window that opens, find the previously downloaded MacOS Mojave folder. In it we find folder SharedSupport , click on it 1 time to just select it, and then click on Copy . We wait.

Now we reboot the PC and boot from the flash drive (boot the flash drive in UEFI mode — next to the name of the flash drive there should be an inscription UEFI). This will open Clover. If your video card works through PCI-Express 3.0, then go to Options , and in the first line of Boot Args we write npci=0x3000 (to start entering, press Enter, after completing the entry, press Enter again). We return to the main menu after Return . Next, click on Boot MacOS Install from MacOS Base System and wait. If you have reached the apple, then everything is fine.

When the installation menu opens, select Utilities->Terminal from the top menu. Now we disconnect the Internet cable from the computer, enter date 102523382016 into the console and press Enter . Close the terminal (in the top menu, click on Terminal-> Close Terminal ). In the main window, select disk utility, then click on View->Show all devices . In the left menu, select the disk on which the system will be installed and click on the Erase button in the upper area of the window (it is important to select the disk itself, and not its internal branches!). In the window that opens, you can change the name of the disk, then click on Erase . You can close Disk Utility after formatting.

In the main menu, click on Reinstall MacOS. The normal installation process will then begin. In the disk selection window, you will need to select your disk that you previously formatted. After that, the installation will begin. During the installation process, the computer will restart and Clover will open. In Clover we go to Settings and again we prescribe the argument npci=0x3000. We return to the main bootloader menu and click on MacOS Install from MacOS (second item). The installation should then continue.

Another reboot will occur. In Clover, the npci=0x3000 flag can no longer be added (if the installation does not continue without adding it, you can add it) select Boot MacOS from MacOS . If everything is fine, a window with a choice of language will appear. The installation process at this stage is standard. But it is important to select My computer is not connected to the Internet in the window with Internet connection. In the window Transfer information to this Mac select Do not transfer information . In the express settings window, click on Customize settings and make sure that the option Turn on location services on this Mac is not enabled . Uncheck the boxes in the Analysis window.

After setup, the system should boot. Now, in order for it to boot without a flash drive, on the desktop, click on the Clover flash drive and drag the Clover Configurator with a green icon from it to the Applications section in the left menu. Open the configurator, select 9 in the left menu1220 Connect EFI . In this section, in the lower area EFI partitions select the drive on which the Mac is installed by clicking on Mount Partition . Next, click on Open section . In the window that opens, go to the EFI folder. Next, open the USB flash drive again, go to the EFI folder and copy BOOT and CLOVER from this folder to the EFI folder that was opened earlier in the configurator.

That’s it. If your system did not boot without the ncpi=0x3000 flag, in the configurator click on the button in the lower left corner with an arrow to the right, in the window that opens, select the EFI disk in the left menu. Next EFI->CLOVER->config.plist , click Open . The bootloader config will open. Through it, kext, patches are installed and all parameters are configured. In the Boot section, you can right-click to add npci=0x3000 . After that, save the config. Now you will not need to enter it every time you download.

Will Magic Trackpad 2 work on Hackintosh?

No problem with the Trackpad 2 either — it connected quickly and started working as if it were an iMac instead of a Hackintosh. All gestures work and even Force Touch. I really regret that I did not abandon Windows on my PC from the moment it was built. And I advise all readers to focus on MacOS support when choosing hardware for a computer.
