Phase out of R134a? — Maintenance/Repairs

I recall several news articles last year talking about the phase out of R134a. I thought it was expected to start in June 2016 and complete phase out by 2020. Does anyone have any insight to this? It is still available at the parts stores and is still pretty inexpensive. Last summer I purchased a 30# jug at sams for about $70 and it is still the same price. I was thinking about this because I just opened that tank for charging my camry after the engine swap.

It is generally being replaced by R513, I believe. I think it is being called Opteon…

Regardless, I wouldn’t worry for the foreseeable future. Mostly, the Commercial HVAC industry is moving in that direction right now in the designing phase. I haven’t heard a lot of news about it on the Automotive front.

Many Dodges already have , and Ford is soon to come with . . R1234yf.
Don’t know the chemical name yet but the dealer has to pay 842.75 for a . . TEN . . pound cylinder.

R134A was never considered to be GOOD for the environment, just a lot less harmful than R12.

What about the other refrigerants ? Why is the auto industry taking it in the shorts ? They treat us shops as though it only us resposible for the atmospheric mess.
What about the refrigerators and freezers ( R22 ? ) in every home and store ?
When we get a car into the shop . . the freon is alreaady gone ! . . That’s why they’re here. WE don’t just open it up and let it all out .

@“oldtimer 11” I bought a couple cans of R134a for $3.99 a throw last summer at a tractor supply place. The refrigerant on my old Mustang had been leaking out at a rate of about 1 can a summer for a while, then suddenly it became 2 cans in about a 36 hour period. Luckily, it turned out that the schrader valves on both the high and low sides were leaking, it was fixed for less $100 including diagnosis.

1234yf… Creative name…

Changes in refrigerants aren’t in response to auto shops or anyone in particular. The world is in a mad dash to eliminate gases with high GWP from use. Everybody is taking it in the shorts. Unfortunately, it needs to be done. There is no way around it. People tend to cast scientists off as alarmists, but they study this; we don’t. We can pay now or pay later. Later is more expensive.

In time, the gas will become less expensive. It is pricey for a 30lb cylinder because it isn’t widely used. When it is, it won’t be as expensive anymore. R134a is literally everywhere. There is a ton of stock, and it is therefore cheaper. Volume and demand drive the price down.

That said… For the common user… Considering that you can buy a 30lb cylinder for a little over $100, that 9.99 suddenly turns into a $400 per 30lbs. That means, the consumer is getting it in the shorts already when buying recharge bottles due to the special packaging size.

Changes are inevitable. You change, or you’re history. Ford and Chrysler are apparently changing before circumstances force them to do so. Those that don’t will pay a higher costs.

Auto-shops… well, I sympathize. Better start making plans now.

I have used a very environmentally friendly yet flammable hydrocarbon R290 in my truck.

R1234yf I have heard is also flammable and some automakers are looking into using a CO2 system. I believe that R134a by itself is not flammable but when it is saturated with the compressor oil, it is essentially flammable.

I personally think we need to go back to a R290 and R600 system and get away from these designer refrigerants that are “harmful” for the environment. But the lobbyist would never let that happen because they would never make any money. R290 is simply propane that is currently selling for less than 1 penny per ounce ($0.445 / liquid gallon) on the wholesale level you will find out why we would never use that as a refrigerant.

I have several cans of R12 still on my shelf from many years ago. When it gets hot, I put them up for sale on craigslist for $40 per can.

I have a 30# of R134a and the small 12oz cans are only $5 at my local farm supply. I will probably pick up a box of them because they are convenient to use over dragging out the big tank for a small job.

I didn’t realize That it was Opteon YF… LOL I work in Commercial HVAC… Our version of it is R513.

I’ve done a little digging.

Opteon YF is rated with Low Flammability. Both Isobutane and Propane are Highly flammable. That tends to be a big difference. It’s like different types of fuels. Some burn rapidly. Others burn VERY slowly.

So, in essence, the risk of ignition during an accident is lower. If all vehicles used R290 or R600a, then the risk of additional injury would be greater. It is mathematical, not subject to bias or opinion. Consider the cost to society beyond the cost of the actual refrigerant. In other words, insurance companies would capitalize on it.

Lobbyists can lobby, but they tend to lobby to keep their more harmful and cheaper products on the market. Why would they lobby to move toward something that is MORE expensive and MORE difficult to produce?

They wouldn’t. They’re being regulated. GWP of Opteon is 4. (One point higher than 290 and 600a). Propane and Isobutane are not illegal to use. They are illegal to use in systems that aren’t designed for them. All refrigerants are ILLEGAL to use in systems that aren’t designed for them because they would likely develop problems and leaks.

If anybody is colluding together, it would be within the industries themselves. I don’t see this as a lobbyist issue… Generally, the lobbyists fight to continue producing the cheaper and easier to manufacture gas.

What size air conditioner do I need?

There are several metrics you should consider before buying an air conditioner. You have different EER and SEER ratings, power, amperage, voltage, and so on.

The most important metric is the cooling capacity (measured in BTU/hr). It denotes the size of your air conditioner.

BTU meaning: British Thermal Unit or BTU/h is a unit that determines the cooling/heating power of an HVAC device (air conditioner, furnace, etc.).

What is BTU is an AC unit? Simply put, it’s the capacity or power of the AC.

The bigger the BTU, the more cooling effect an AC unit can provide.

Here is an example of how you can calculate how many BTUs you need to cool down a 500 sq. ft. area with 8 feet ceilings, average sun exposure, average climate, and not including kitchen (you can find this BTU calculator below and use it for your situation; with 4,000-24,000 BTU room size table):

In short, you would need a 10,000 BTU air conditioner.

How many BTUs do you need to cool down certain square footage of space properly?

There are only 2 rules:

Not too big. Obviously, you don’t want a 14,000 BTU window air conditioner for a small 12×12 room because it unnecessarily boosts your energy bill.
Not too small. You don’t want to get hot in the summer because you bought a 6,000 BTU portable air conditioner for a 1,000 sq ft apartment.

The BTU needed to cool down a room of known footage that can be calculated. According to The U.S. Department Of Energy recommendation for the size of room air conditioners:

“…an air conditioner generally needs 20 BTU for each square foot of living space.”

Based on room size, ceiling height, and other conditions, you can calculate how many BTU air conditioner you need:

As you can see, the sq ft to BTU converter neatly gives you an idea of what size of air conditioners you should be looking at in an ‘sq ft to BTU’ kind of way.

Roughly measure the square footage to adequately size your air conditioner.

If you want to properly cool down a 300 square foot area (or room), you need a 6,000 BTU air conditioner. Obviously, the problem arises when you have a tiny 12×12 room, for example. According to the US Department of Energy directive, an air conditioner’s most appropriate size would be 2,880 BTU unit. The best you can do here is to buy a small 5,000 BTU window or a small 8,000 BTU portable AC unit (more about the smallest AC units here).

The trendy portable air conditioners, for example, have a cooling capacity of 6,000 BTU to 14,000 BTU. According to Go Downsize, the average size of studio apartments in the US is about 500 sq ft. That means that for a small apartment, you don’t need expensive central air conditioning. You can install an average-sized 10,000 BTU portable air conditioner, which will save you tons of money.

Pro tip: Always buy a little bigger AC unit than this recommendation. Example: When you use the BTU calculator below and get, let’s say, 10,000 BTU for a 500 sq ft area, start looking for a 12,000 BTU air conditioner. Your electricity bill will be a little higher, but you won’t need to sweat if you bought an AC unit that’s too small.

To better illustrate what size of an air conditioner you need, let’s have a look at a BTU chart:

Question: What is the 12,000 BTU air conditioner room size? 12,000 BTU is equal to 1 ton; we’re talking about 1 ton AC room size.

Answer: Using the EPA’s 20 BTU per sq ft rule of thumb, the room size of 12,000 BTU air conditioners is 600 sq ft. Equally, 1 ton AC room size is about 600 sq ft.

Here is a table with rough room size estimates for air conditioners with different cooling capacities to help you out:

Example: How many BTU do you need for a 20×20 room? For a 20×20 room, you need about 10,000 BTU of cooling output.

Again, when narrowing down your choice of an air conditioner, knowing how big an area you need to cool is your best friend. Based on that, you can calculate sq ft to BTU and immediately know what range of BTU values your perfect AC unit should be.

If, for example, you buy a 14,000 BTU portable air conditioner to cool down a 12×12 room, you will have a chill cold room and more than $100/year unnecessary cost on your electricity bill.

Perfect BTU Air Conditioner For Room Sizes

As recommended by The U.S. Department of Energy, the ballpark figure is 20 BTU per sq ft. That is a very good estimate already.

The simplest BTU calculation formula for an air conditioner looks like this:

BTU = Square Footage × 20

However, to get a perfectly-sized air conditioner with just right enough cooling power and no energy overspending, you should consider some additional factors. These are:

Room height.
Local climate.
Sun exposure.
The number and size of the windows.

The BTU calculator and chart work best for standard room height. Obviously, if you have a tall ceiling (older buildings have +10 ft ceilings), you have to add a bit of cooling power in BTU.

There is also a difference if you live in Texas or New York. The local climate in Texas is, on average, hotter, and therefore you should need an air conditioner with a few 1,000 BTU more.

The same goes for sun exposure. If the room or area you’re looking to cool down is generally facing the sun, you will need a bigger air conditioner.

Additionally, the walls do block the sun very effectively. Windows don’t. If you have big windows and many of them, the sun will heat your house more.

In summary, when do you need an air conditioner with higher BTU than standardly recommended:

If you have high walls.
If you live in a hot climate. Examples: California, Texas, Florida, New Mexico, and so on.
If the particular room you want to cool down is facing the sun more often than not.
If you have an above-average size and number of windows.

Example: If you have a 500 sq ft sun cabin near Texas with many glass windows, you should be looking at 10,000 BTU air conditioners (as recommended). It would be best if you were looking at 14,000 BTU portable air conditioners, for example.

What Does BTU Mean In Air Conditioners (Summary)

BTU in air conditioners is simple a metric of how much cooling effect that particular AC unit can produce.

We want an air conditioner that has just the right amount of cooling effect. That’s why by knowing the square footage of the area we want to cool down, we can calculate how many BTUs should our air conditioner have.

The equation for ‘sq ft to BTU‘ is quite simple – multiply the sq ft with 20. That means that a 500 sq ft room needs a 10,000 BTU air conditioner. Of course, do make sure to buy an AC unit that is a bit stronger if you have high ceilings, live in a hot climate, and have an above-average sun in those rooms.

For smaller spaces (example: camping air conditioners for tents), you can use portable battery-powered AC units.

You should use the BTU calculator when choosing different types of air conditioners, including:

Mini-split AC units. Example: Mr Cool mini-split units have the highest SEER rating of above 20 EER.
Portable air conditioners. Here you can check the biggest (up to 15,000 BTU), quietest (below 50 dB), and portable AC with heater units. These are the best portable AC units for apartments, for example.
Window AC units. Here you can check the biggest (24,000+ BTU), quietest (below 42 dB), and window AC units with heaters. Special kinds of window AC units include casement window AC units, through-the-wall AC units, saddle window AC units, and low-profile window units.

Note: Evaporative coolers and mini personal air coolers do not produce a cooling effect that can be expressed in BTU. They use water evaporation instead of the refrigerant-based system to provide a cooling effect.

Why is My Car’s A/C Blowing Hot Air Out of The Vent?

The air conditioning system in your car is designed to cool down the air in the cabin of your vehicle to keep you comfortable on a hot day. It’s something that we often take for granted until it’s a hot day and your car’s A/C is not working. When you only get hot air instead of cold air, it can be frustrating and extremely uncomfortable. If your air conditioner blows warm air, it is important that you get it looked at as soon as possible so you can continue driving in cool comfort. In this article, we’re going to look at how your Car’s A/C creates the cold air so you can more accurately diagnose what’s going wrong.

How Does a Car’s A/C Work?

Your car’s A/C system is one that operates a little differently than you might think. Instead of actually creating cool air, it instead removes the heat and moisture from the air inside of your car, leaving you with cooler feeling air. In technical terms, the cool air is created by blowing air from either outside your car, or from the cabin over cold coils. This cools down the air before it gets blown out of the ventilation system into your car to keep you comfortable. Most systems are designed to blow very cold air, between 32 and 40 degrees! These cooling coils, called the evaporator, is where the actual cooling of the air happens. These coils are cooled by cold refrigerant flowing through them.

Most cars today use a refrigerant called R-134a which is a special refrigerant designed to work at the temperatures and pressure standard in a car’s A/C system. As the cold refrigerant passes through the evaporator it absorbs the heat in the air which warms up the refrigerant. This warmer refrigerant now needs to be cooled back down so your A/C system can continue to operate. This is accomplished by first compressing the refrigerant to a high pressure which also heats it up to a high temperature.

This hot refrigerant is then cooled down by running it through the condenser. The condenser is cooled by ambient air in the front of your car just like the coolant in the radiator is cooled. On most cars the condenser is actually in front of the radiator and gets cooled first to make sure your A/C system gives you consistently cool air. This high pressure, now cooled, refrigerant is then allowed to expand quickly as it passes through an orifice or expansion valve. The expansion valve is a simple device that takes advantage of the fact that quickly expanding liquids and gases get cold. The process of liquids and gases getting cold during expansion is a scientific phenomenon you can prove by using an entire can of spray paint in one sitting and seeing how cold the can gets.

Now the cold, low-pressure refrigerant can return to the evaporator to cool it and along with it, more air keeping your car comfortable. There are a few other components in the system like temperature and pressure sensors, hoses and the dryer or accumulator. The dryer is where any moisture is removed from the refrigerant, the refrigerant is filtered to make sure it all enters the compressor as a gas, and the oil for the system is equally distributed through the refrigerant passing through.

Common A/C Problems & How to Fix Them

If your car’s air conditioner isn’t working properly and is blowing hot air then one of these systems isn’t doing its job properly. Getting to the root of the problem can take some time and effort, but we have simplified the process by providing you with the most common A/C problems along with how to resolve these problems once they’re discovered.

The Evaporator or Condenser is Clogged

Since there are two components that require air to be moving through them, the evaporator and the condenser, it is possible one or both of these are clogged and not getting the proper air flow. Check the front of your vehicle for debris, the engine cooling fans for proper operation, and your cabin air filter for debris and dirt. The refrigerant in your system also needs to be able to flow properly through the system. Check your compressor for proper operation, clogs in your system and the proper amount of refrigerant. All of these can be checked by observing the pressures around the system both before and after the compressor and all the other components. This can be done with set of A/C gauges to measure both the high and low pressure sides of your A/C system.

If you find unusually high pressure before any particular components and unexpectedly low pressures after them, there is a good chance there is a clog in that component. If this is the case, you will most likely find the clog in the accumulator or the condenser. If you don’t have a large enough pressure increase across your compressor you may be in need of a new AC compressor. If you have lower than expected pressures on the low pressure side of your system, may simply have a low refrigerant level.

Electrical System Issues

Let’s keep it simple since your A/C system is very complex. There are so many different wires, fuses, pressure switches, and more that all work together to start blowing cold air into your car. Therefore, if just one of these components stop functioning, it is very likely that your entire system will shut down. For a novice, the place to start here is by doing a visual inspection of the wiring to see if there are any that are damaged or frayed. Repair or replace any damaged wires if you can find them, if not, you may have to take the car to your dealer or a mechanic who will have the expertise to diagnose the specific issue.

Hydrocarbon refrigerants

From a chemical point of view, a hydrocarbon [HC] is an elemental compound of hydrogen and carbon that occurs naturally and is found in high concentrations in crude oil. Used as a modern refrigerant, non-toxic hydrocarbons are an environmentally friendly alternative to CFC/HCFC/HFC fluorocarbons, which contribute to ozone depletion and global warming.

Hydrocarbons are natural refrigerants with zero ODP and very low GWP.

The relative cost of a system using hydrocarbons depends to a large extent on the application. In residential and light commercial applications, the cost of the system is similar to that of HFC-based systems. In commercial and industrial refrigeration applications, hydrocarbon systems tend to be relatively expensive due to the need for explosion-proof enclosures for electrical equipment, but for outdoor chillers, the additional safety costs are much more modest.

However, ECO-Freeze hydrocarbon refrigerants never contain R1270 or R1150.

For safety reasons, the use of hydrocarbons is subject to various international, regional and national standards, as well as strict regulations. Currently, safety standards are evolving at a rapid pace, which is necessary to fully exploit the potential of these refrigerants.

The main industry standards are IEC 60335-2-40, IEC 60335-2-89, ISO 5149 and EN378. ECO-Freeze also complies with and fulfills the requirements of ISO9001 and UN1950.

When safety regulations are observed, the concentration of the leaked refrigerant will not exceed the lower flammable limit (LFL), at which ignition sources can ignite it, even in extreme situations. The necessary precautions and system design depend on the refrigerant flow rate. In general, sources of ignition inside devices should be avoided. Most hydrocarbons are not toxic and the main safety risk is due to their flammability, although gaseous hydrocarbons are heavier than air and displace air in the lungs.
