Increasing the number of physical cores is a trend in modern processor building. And in this regard, AMD is a trendsetter. In March 2017, it introduced mass-produced 8-core 16-thread processors based on the Zen microarchitecture. A year later, second-generation Ryzen chips appeared. But Zen+ can be considered a simple translation of the original design to a new process with some cosmetic improvements. nine0003

But the Zen 2 microarchitecture in 2019 brought not only the 7nm process technology, but also a new chiplet topology with a number of important changes. As a result, within the framework of the Socket AM4 platform, the «red» managed to create 12- and even 16-core CPUs, increasing the IPC along the way.

Our first test subject will be AMD Ryzen 9 3900X . This is a 12-core member of the Matisse family. It consists of three semiconductor dies: a pair of 7nm CCD chipsets with two 4-core 8-thread CCX modules and a 12nm cIOD die with memory controller and I/O interfaces. All this is interconnected by the second generation Infinity Fabric bus. Since we have a 12-core model in front of us, one core is hardware-locked in each CCX complex. nine0003

The output was 12 cores in 24 threads at speeds from 3.8 to 4.6 GHz. The total L3 cache is 64 MB. Despite the impressive performance, the thermal package of the novelty is 105 watts. In addition, the Ryzen 9 3900X boasts official support for DDR4-3200 memory and a PCI Express 4.0 bus. As standard cooling, a Wraith Prism cooler with RGB lighting is used. The recommended cost is $499. In reality, the average price tag is 15400 UAH.

Let’s move on to the test stand. It includes the top motherboard MSI MEG X570 GODLIKE E-ATX format. She has 19-channel power supply, and energy is supplied through two 8-pin connectors and the usual 24-pin. This is more than enough even for extreme overclocking of the most voracious chips.

CPU cooling was entrusted to the time-tested two-section coolant system be quiet! SILENT LOOP 240mm .

So that nothing rests on the video subsystem, we took the flagship video accelerator ASUS ROG STRIX GeForce RTX 2080 Ti .

AMD recommends using 3600 MHz RAM for Matisse chips. In our case, this is a set of CORSAIR VENGEANCE RGB PRO 16GB DDR4-3600 of two peer-to-peer 8 GB sticks on Samsung chips. It runs out of the box in DDR4-2133 mode, so be sure to enable the XMP profile in the BIOS. After we get 3600 MHz with timings 16-18-18-36.

The disk subsystem is represented by a pair of NVMe drives. Operating system and programs set to ADATA XPG SX8200 Pro 512 GB. For games, we used Seagate FireCuda 520 2 TB with PCI Express 4.0 interface. Both hard drives have very high speed performance.

The place of the power supply was taken by the premium Seasonic PRIME TX-750 TITANIUM for 750 W. At 50% load, its efficiency is an impressive 94%, which is confirmed by the highest level of 80PLUS Titanium certification.

All this stuff is collected in an unusual case RIOTORO GPX100 MORPHEUS . It has a fully modular design: all panels and motherboard tray can change height. Depending on the scenario, you can get a Midi Tower with eight expansion slots or a Mini Tower with five. A real find for the PC enthusiast!

The system unit is ready — let’s talk about peripherals. There is not always time for full-fledged reviews, so we will share our impressions during the tests.

Used as keyboard CORSAIR K 70 RGB MK .2 This is a fairly rare representative of low-profile mechanics. It is made in a full size format with a NUM block and a wrist rest. Adherents of the classic Skeleton format can pay attention to the version without the «Low Profile» prefix.

CORSAIR Nightsword RGB is an asymmetric mouse with different textured body elements. Looks pretty interesting and memorable.

The CORSAIR MM350 Champion playing surface was paired with the rodent. Plain black rug measuring 450 x 400 mm. Of the decorations, only the manufacturer’s logo in the lower right corner.

Well, what about without a gaming headset. In our case it is CORSAIR HS35 in blue. Also available in green, carbon and red. The novelty has a rather strict and attractive design – you definitely can’t call it boring.

We haven’t forgotten about the monitor either. This is the 27-inch ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q . It has a matte IPS-matrix with Quad HD resolution and a refresh rate of up to 165 Hz. There is support for NVIDIA G-Sync adaptive sync technology. In general, everything a demanding gamer needs is there. nine0003

The video was captured using an external system with AVerMedia Live Gamer Portable 2 Plus, and the FPS Monitor utility was used for monitoring.

Before the test itself, I would like to emphasize two important points! Firstly, all projects were launched in mass Full HD resolution in combination with minimum and maximum graphics settings, and in some places with ray tracing. The first option evaluates the computing potential of the processor. That is, how many CPU frames can be prepared as much as possible. The second case shows the real picture of the world. But there is no point in testing at ultra-high resolutions, since the video card will act as a “bottleneck”. nine0003

Secondly, it is clear that nothing should slow down on top-end hardware, so apart from FPS, let’s study the efficiency of using cores/threads. And we will also try to convey the general impressions of the gameplay itself.

Now let’s go! First on the list will be Apex Legends . Already at maximum speed, the game hits its limit of 144 FPS. More than comfortable running.

Looking at CPU usage, there are between 8 and 16 threads involved. The download itself is uneven. nine0003

In ARK Survival Evolved at maximum settings, you can count on a stable 60-70 fps. Switching to the minimum preset increases the average speed to 130 FPS. No friezes or lags were noticed.

The game does not use more than 14 threads. Loading floats.

Assassins Creed Odyssey is quite CPU hungry. At maximum speeds, we get around 70 frames / s. If you lower the graphics settings, then on average you can get 110 FPS. The gameplay is pleasant and responsive. nine0003

In places the game is capable of loading up to 22 threads, with 10 of them over 80% full.

In Battlefield V , the single-player campaign at maximum speed produces about 170 fps. We turn on ray tracing and the speed drops to 100 fps. At minimum settings without rays, we see about 200 FPS on average. In network mode for 64 players on the Fallen Order map with the maximum graphics preset, we run around 65 FPS. Oddly enough, with active ray tracing, the speed dropped only slightly below 60 fps. With minimal settings and without rays, the FPS has grown to 80. If the arms were still “straight”, then you can even bend over, otherwise you have to be in the role of an observer. nine0003

The game uses 16-18 threads, but unevenly. From the unpleasant: until Auto HDR was turned off, there were constant lags. Although they slip without it, they are not particularly annoying.

Test and Review: AMD Ryzen 7 3700X and Ryzen 9 3900X

Today is finally the day when AMD launched a massive attack. The Zen 2 architecture allowed AMD to catch up with rival Intel. With Zen, Zen+ processors, and the AM4 platform, AMD has been setting the stage for a breakthrough over the past two years. And now everything is ready. Let’s see how the eight-core Ryzen 7 3700X and 12-core Ryzen 9The 3900X will show themselves against Intel’s competitors.

As we now know, AMD had very ambitious plans. The Zen architecture was not a one-time event, from the very beginning several generations were planned based on it, each of which pursued its own goals, taking into account the expected production technologies. When the Zen 2 architecture was planned in 2015, the target was a 7nm process. But at that time it was not yet clear whether it would be possible to switch to it or not. Zen 2 was designed as a server architecture with low clock speeds, so it has a design to match. Which we will see with the second generation of EPYC processors at the end of the summer, which will offer up to 64 cores. nine0003

But AMD later discovered that processors could run at significantly higher frequencies. Therefore, Zen 2 is quite well suited for Ryzen desktop processors. What was the alternative plan, AMD did not explain.

Ryzen 3000 processors have three key features to note.

  • 7nm process technology
  • Chiplet design
  • Zen 2 architecture with significant improvements in IPC performance

For the Zen 2 architecture, AMD set a number of goals that were to increase IPC by 8-10%. However, in 2015 it was difficult to imagine whether they could catch up with Intel. In the end, we managed to achieve 15%, the reasons are as follows:

  • The front of the pipeline has become more balanced
  • The micro-op cache has increased — it can store more decoded instructions and reuse it
  • Branch prediction has been improved

At the Next Horizon Tech Day event in early June, it was confirmed that a 16-core Ryzen processor would be coming. It will be called the Ryzen 9 3950X and will have a base frequency of 3.5 GHz, boosted to 4.7 GHz. As a result, we get the fastest Ryzen processor in terms of Boost frequency. The thermal package of the processor was the same 105 watts. CPU Ryzen 9The 3950X will be released in September. All other processors, as well as the corresponding motherboards, will appear after July 7th.

We got a Ryzen 9 3900X processor with 12 cores for testing. The base frequency is 3.8 GHz, in Boost mode we get a level of «only» 4.6 GHz. Thermal Package (TDP) — 105 W. The Ryzen 7 3800X processor belongs to the mass market. It offers eight cores at 3.9GHz or 4.5GHz, respectively. There is only one Valhalla crystal here, so the L3 cache is halved to 32 MB. TDP is the same 105 watts. nine0003

The Ryzen 7 3700X processor is more economical, we are just testing it today. The clock speeds are 3.6 and 4.4 GHz, respectively, the cache size is identical to the Ryzen 7 3800X. For this model, AMD reduced the TDP to 65W. The Ryzen 5 3600X is the first model with six cores clocked at 3.8 and 4.4 GHz, respectively. The L2 cache has been reduced to 3MB as only six cores are active. The L3 cache is identical — 32 MB. The Ryzen 5 3600X gives you more wiggle room with a TDP of 95 W.

The Ryzen 5 3600 is an entry-level processor. It offers six cores at frequencies from 3.67 or 4.2 GHz, respectively — that is, just under the 3600X. The thermal package is 65 watts. Ryzen 3 processors will probably come out later. Six processors have been officially announced at the moment, five are available as of today.

All processors are based on the AM4 platform, or rather, on the socket of the same name. The details were revealed by AMD at Computex. Among other things, 3rd generation Ryzen processors offer 24 PCI Express 4. 0 lanes. Four are reserved for connecting the chipset. That leaves 16+4 lanes for the graphics card and other devices such as SSDs. DDR4-3200 memory is officially supported, but 3G CPU memory can be overclocked and run at higher frequencies than the previous generation. nine0003

The chipset is manufactured using the 14nm process technology and has the same structure as the I/O die in the processors. As a result, AMD can release the chip for use in different scenarios. But the I / O die of the CPU is still manufactured on a 12-nm process and plays a major role in working with components, so to speak. The chipset uses a 14nm I/O crystal. And some components, such as memory controllers, are simply not involved in the chipset.

9billion transistors. Therefore, for Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processors with eight or six cores, we get a total area of \u200b\u200b199 mm² and 5.99 billion transistors. The chips on the Zen 2 architecture are slightly smaller, but when paired with an IOD, we get more than a billion transistors more. Ryzen 9 processors with 12 or 16 cores have a total area of 273 mm², the number of transistors is 9.89 billion.

Of course, there will be further expansions. EPYC processor with eight CCDs and IOD (if it is identical for server processors) corresponds to an area of 717 mm² and 33.29billion transistors. For comparison, the Cascade-Lake SP processor with 28 cores covers an area of 694 mm² and contains about 8 billion transistors.

What is Thermal Design Power?

We have already mentioned the term Thermal Design Power (TDP) or thermal design many times, so it is worth clarifying its meaning in relation to Ryzen processors. TDP is not synonymous with processor power consumption. The TDP of AMD processors is calculated using the following formula:

TDP (W) = (tCase (°C) — tAmbient(°C)) / (HSF Θca)

  • tCase is the maximum temperature on the die / heat spreader that the processor can reach for maximum performance
  • tAmbient — the maximum air temperature that the cooler fan HSF (Heat Sink Fan) can receive for maximum performance
  • HSF Θca is set in ° C/W and corresponds to the minimum required performance of the cooler in terms of heat dissipation.
