Ideazon Merc Gaming Keyboard
The Ideazon Merc Gaming Keyboard tries to renovate the typical game keyboard with a separate cluster of game keys in a supposedly easier-to-use layout. We weren’t all that impressed, but we like that it’s cheap and that its software is powerful. Just…
Separate game pad area isolates keys in a game-friendly design, and robust customization software lets you tweak the key mapping as much as you want.
Keys feel too light to the touch without enough tactile response; nonstandard number key layout is hard to get used to; game pad keys are hard to differentiate without looking.

The best games about mercenaries on PC
They always climb into the thick of battle and boldly look into the eyes of death. Their effectiveness is determined by the amount that the employer is willing to pay, and the methods of performing tasks are often far from humane. We are talking about mercenaries, to whom our selection of games is dedicated.
Mercenaries in the Middle Ages and fantasy
Battle Brothers
It is known that the profession of a mercenary did not appear today, but a very, very long time ago — probably with the beginning of the first wars. Therefore, in historical games there are also soldiers of fortune — for example, in Battle Brothers from the Overhype studio.
Controlling a squad of fighters, the player will travel through a medieval (with an admixture of fantasy) open world, complete contracts, fight opposing factions, hire soldiers and influence the political map with their actions. Despite the rather modest picture, the game is addictive, and the battles are naturalistic and cruel.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
Every witcher is essentially a mercenary who doesn’t shy away from dirty work, and Geralt is no exception. He takes orders for the extermination of monsters that plague the common people, and receives a reward for their heads.
Of course, it is impossible to call the protagonist of The Witcher series a mercenary who is ready to perform any task for the sake of hard cash: Geralt has certain principles and moral principles, and often he gets involved in adventures not for the sake of reward, but in pursuit of his own interests. However, the profession of a witcher has some similarities with the way of life of a mercenary. For this, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt earned a place on the list.

MORDHAU
MORDHAU is a multiplayer action game in a medieval setting dedicated to sword fights; in fact, the name of the game is based on the “mordhau” grip, in which the fighter takes the sword by the blade and strikes with the hilt.
Here, players control mercenaries who fight massive battles for gold. The project is distinguished by good reliability, a large selection of modes and wide character customization.

Darkest Dungeon
Darkest Dungeon is a dark dungeon crawler with roguelike elements and squad management. Dark and unsettling, the game explores the themes of fear and madness, and takes you on an exciting journey through the old manor and its surroundings.
You can recruit adventurers to follow you, each with their own set of characteristics, strengths and weaknesses. But be careful: the dungeons of the mansion are fraught with horrors, and your characters may not be able to withstand meeting them — go crazy, lose control of themselves, and even kill their teammates!

Final Fantasy VII
The protagonist of the jRPG Final Fantasy VII is Cloud Strife, a mercenary recruited by eco-terrorists to fight a mega-corporation. At first, the character behaves aloofly: he performs the task for the sake of money, and is not going to be friends with his employers. However, over time, Cloud becomes close to new acquaintances and is included in a large-scale confrontation with the villain in order to save the entire planet.
Final Fantasy VII is one of the most important games in the industry. It has received many positive reviews and awards, and in 2020 Square Enix released a remake of it, covering events from the beginning of the original.

Black Legend
When the city of Grant is taken over by a mad alchemist, along with a cult of his name, the king finds no other solution than to send mercenaries there with the promise to forgive them for all their crimes.
You will become one of the daredevils: gather a squad of fighters, go through the gates of the city and face the horrors that have settled there. Black Legend is a good tactical RPG with interesting combat based on alchemy.

Stoneshard
In many compilation games, the life of a mercenary is romanticized, but not in Stoneshard. This is a difficult, no, very difficult RPG with roguelike elements, in which you, on behalf of an unknown medieval guy, go on adventures through a war-torn kingdom and fight for life.
So that life does not seem like honey, the developers have implemented an advanced system of health and psyche, so here you can easily die from a bleeding wound or a panic attack. For those whom this does not stop, there is a mode with one life.

Wartales
Atmospheric role-playing game with elements of strategy that allows you to feel the life of free mercenaries. As their leader, you will guide the group through a charming medieval universe, engage in tactical combat, descend into ancient tombs, and complete a series of quests to hear the clink of coins.
The emphasis in this game is on party development — travelers can be recruited, but they have unique specializations, skills, and weapon preferences that may not suit you. At the same time, Wartales offers freedom of choice: you can be a respectable mercenary, or someone who immediately cuts off heads for a reward.

Across the Obelisk
A co-op card roguelike that tells a fairytale story. The king’s daughter was stolen, the court knights are unable to find her, so he turns to the mercenaries with a very interesting offer. You will manage a detachment of such people, participating in card battles and learning all the delights of the roguelike genre.
We recommend taking a look at the game because of an interesting feature — co-op. You can manage the entire squad alone, or call friends who will replace AI partners. With friends, a card bagel opens from an unexpected side.

Modern Mercenaries
Mercenaries Series
The Mercenaries Series is perhaps the first thing that comes to mind when it comes to mercenary games. It consists of two parts, and invites players to get used to the role of soldiers of fortune doing «dirty work» on order.
These third-person shooters are remembered by gamers for their sandbox elements, impressive destructibility for their time, and the faction and reputation system. These are pretty fun games with a good dose of fun and confusion, and definitely worth checking out if retro gaming is your thing.
The game is not available in official digital services
Jagged Alliance series
If we talk about mercenaries, fans of shooters will remember Mercenaries, but fans of tactical games will first of all call the Jagged Alliance series. The cult line of turn-based strategies is dedicated to conflicts in hot spots around the world, in which the player takes part, controlling a squad of fighters.
The games of the Jagged Alliance franchise combine well-developed tactical battles, a role-playing system, as well as a well-thought-out economy, in which it is necessary not only to complete tasks, but also to capture territories for a constant influx of finances, and hire and equip new fighters with the proceeds. Alas, over time, the series turned somewhere wrong and quietly reposed, but the first two parts forever remained in history as the best representatives of their genre.

Hitman Series
Silent Agent 47 is a genetically engineered assassin working for the powerful ICA organization that provides assassination services to people and governments around the world. If it is necessary to eliminate the target, the 47th will do it without noise and dust, arrange the murder as an accident, or simply soak the victim in a secluded place.
The Hitman series attracts with elements of social stealth and sandbox, as well as freedom of action: you are limited only by the boundaries of the level and your imagination, and you choose the ways to complete tasks yourself.

Soldier of Fortune Series
In the Soldier of Fortune first-person shooter series, the player once again assumes the role of a hired soldier and completes missions to eliminate terrorists, saving the world as a result of their actions.
The games of the line received positive reviews and high ratings, but gamers remember the weakest third part, Soldier of Fortune Payback: it implements a system of realistic dismemberment of opponents, with shooting limbs and rivers of blood. For this, the game was even banned in some countries.
Games not available on official digital services
Project Wingman
This arcade sim puts you at the controls of a jet fighter and takes to the skies to complete missions in combat zones around the world.
Project Wingman is set in an alternate history setting, with an extensive story campaign and Conquest mode with RPG and roguelike elements. Given the setting, the developers allowed themselves to dream a little, so the planes in the game can be equipped with railguns and other exotic weapons. In addition, the project supports VR helmets, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in a dynamic gameplay.

E5 Brigade: New Alliance
Homemade game about mercenaries that invites gamers to join the civil conflict in a small banana state. Having collected a detachment of mercenaries, the players will join one of the warring parties; it also provides the opportunity to play for yourself or go over to the side of the enemy.
In terms of gameplay, E5 Brigade: New Alliance is a tactical RPG with recruitment, real-time battles (with smart pause) and a huge number of game mechanics, including meticulous weapon and equipment design, multi-faceted combat and a lot of tactics.

7,62 High Caliber
Sequel to the above «E5 Brigade», a tactic from the Russian studio Aperion, the plot of which continues the events of the original game. In the role of a mercenary, players will explore the territory of a fictional tropical country, act on the side of one of the factions or fight for themselves, manage their squad and try to earn a comfortable old age.
Like the previous part, 7.62 High Caliber is notable for its detailed implementation and simulation of character equipment, the interconnection of many game mechanics and addictive gameplay.

In S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky, this hero is Scar, a mercenary who performs escort missions in the Zone. He will take part in events that will lead to the beginning of the plot of S.T.A.L.K.E.R .: Shadow of Chernobyl, and players will learn more details about the complex universe of the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series.

Zero Caliber VR
In Zero Caliber VR you will literally look at the modern world through the eyes of a mercenary, because the game requires virtual reality glasses. This is a first-person shooter with PvE, cooperative mode and PvP, but the emphasis is not on activities, but on the player’s feelings when firing weapons — the mechanics are polished to a shine, and the guns can be customized as you like. If you have VR glasses lying around, it’s time to dust them off and experience a new shooter experience.

Shadow Warrior series
The first part of the Shadow Warrior series came out back in 1997, but we are interested in a new trilogy: the 2013 reboot, the sequel released in 2016, and the third part arrived in time in 2021.
Shadow Warrior tells the story of Lo Wang, a modern ninja mercenary who fights demons. The games of the line are notable for the abundance of humor (often black and outhouse) and the combination of the use of melee and firearms.

Far Cry 2
The first game in the Far Cry series developed by Ubisoft. And, perhaps, the most serious: the developers have prepared a breathtaking scenario, realistic gameplay and a dirty brown picture filter that enhances immersion in the atmosphere of an African country mired in civil war.
Here, a hero, a mercenary suffering from malaria, will follow the trail of an arms dealer to stop his activities and stop the endless bloodshed. However, in the course of the story, he will have to reconsider his views.

Army of Two Series
This line never made it to PC, but it’s worth talking about. Army of Two is a dilogy of cooperative shooters dedicated to the adventures of mercenaries who perform tasks in the hot spots of the planet.
Moreover, they are so cooperative that one cannot do without the support of the second player. Like A Way Out or It Takes Two, only long before them and with a militaristic twist. These shooters were only released on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 and are not available for sale on modern platforms. However, these are some of the best mercenary games and definitely have a place in our selection.

Mercenaries of the future
BattleTech
In the far future, mercenaries are not going to be abandoned: BattleTech is dedicated to a squad of mech pilots who perform dangerous tasks during a brutal interstellar civil war.
In this turn-based strategy game, you’ll develop your base, make contracts with neo-feudal lords, and take to the battlefields as you control combat robots in brutal skirmishes.

Cyberpunk 2077
CD Project RED has some kind of craving for mercenaries, otherwise how to explain that the Cyberpunk 2077 protagonist also does various dirty work for money? But if for Geralt this is a way to earn extra money, then for V it has become a key starting point for adventures, because during the next task he hides an important biochip for megacorporations in his head, which contains the identity of Johnny Silverhand.
Knight City is open to you — a city of a technological future, which is plagued by crime, prejudice and corporate power. You build your own history, complete orders, earn a reputation and influence the whole city with your actions.

Necromunda: Hired Gun
The universe of Warhammer 40000 is huge, and there was a place in it for mercenaries whose work is not to be envied. In the role of a ruthless fighter, you will go to the city of hives, where you will get nothing but problems.
Non-stop action, spectacular parkour and brutal shootouts with both other thugs and mutants await you. A loyal Cyber Mastiff will come to your aid, which can be upgraded, and the mercenary’s body will also become stronger thanks to implants.

Freelancer
A classic, iconic space sim from Chris Roberts, who is currently running the equally ambitious Star Citizen project.
In Freelancer, the protagonist is a mercenary who roams space, transports cargo, hunts for heads, trades, fights, fulfills orders from various factions — in general, he tries to survive in an unfriendly space. This is a great, albeit a bit dated, adventure.
Games not available on official digital services
Star Wolves Series
In this RPG series, players take on the role of bounty hunters who keep order in the populated sectors of the galaxy. They have to fight pirates, escort merchant ships, extract valuable resources, and perform various tasks.
