Reviews of the Radeon HD 4850

I came up with one thing — in short, so . . I live in a private house and I decided to take the system unit outside in the winter)))) in short, I will drill holes in the wall and on the other On the other hand, I will make a house for the system unit out of bricks and put it there in the winter … .. ahahh do you think he will not freeze))))))

There is 4870 from sapphire, with normal cooling (80 mm cooler, 4 tubes, a decent radiator) and 100 degrees in the furmark goes .. so there is not only cooling. I changed the termuhu, the cooler is spinning, the tubes transfer heat to the radiator. Fortunately, the card is in a test PC, and it doesn’t care.

was played on a macbook for 11 years with such a card. As you know, makos is not for games, but as a replacement for the built-in, this is the top option. Especially if you have i7 and 16 gigs of RAM — with such a kit, GTA 4 and 5 will fly, and the witcher is the third on low-medium.

Maw, if you are interested, I can give you a review of a dual-chip radeon 3870 × 2, there are no normal reviews on it on Russian-language YouTube, we live in the same city if that. Answer in the comments if you are interested. Wash this epic among the mastodons of those times.

    specifications, features and reviews

A worthy alternative to GeForce 8800GTS and GeGorce 9 graphics acceleratorsThe 800GTX from NVidia from the legendary Canadian manufacturer became the ATI Radeon HD 4850 in 2008. This video adapter practically did not differ from its direct competitors in terms of technical specifications, and its cost was significantly lower. As a result, Nvidia was forced to revise its pricing policy and make products more affordable. As a result, buyers have the opportunity to buy a powerful video card at a more affordable price from both ATI and NVidia.

    Product Background

After the release of the Radeon HD 3000 series graphics cards, the Canadian company ATI did not introduce updated products for almost a year and a half. The economic crisis of 2007 led to such a pause, and, as a result, the demand for high-performance graphics solutions dropped significantly. Ultimately, the old owners were forced to sell the second largest developer and manufacturer of video chips, and AMD acted as a buyer. It was on this wave that sales of the ATI Radeon HD 4850 and a more productive version of this solution, the HD4870, started. Their cost compared to direct competitors from the «green» camp was lower, and the level of performance in most applications was almost identical.

The ATI Radeon HD 4850 logo was also applied to the video accelerator chip. The Catalyst series driver also initially had the Canadian manufacturer’s logo. But then, as the software was updated, it was already replaced by AMD. As a result, later on this product became known as AMD Radeon HD 4850.

    Solution niche

The ATI Radeon HD 4850 was built on the basis of one of the most productive semiconductor video chips of 2008. Accordingly, the technical specifications allowed him at that time to solve almost any problem. As a result, it was focused on being used as part of the most productive gaming computers of the time or graphics stations. Also, theoretically, it could be used as part of workstations or multimedia PCs, however, in this case, its capabilities were far from being fully used, and such an approach from an economic point of view was not entirely justified. For such systems, lower performance, lower cost products have been introduced.

    Package contents

This product package was as follows:

    • The video card itself with the cooling system installed.

    • Instruction manual, complete with warranty card.

    • CD with distribution kits, driver and other special software.

Some manufacturers have replaced the usual cardboard box with a metal case to further stimulate sales of this product. This indicated his premium. This practice has not received wide distribution, but the fact itself must still be noted.

    Operating modes

The basic mode of operation of this product is a single video card in a PC. But this solution also supported ATI’s proprietary technology, which was called «Crossfire». Its essence lies in the fact that several graphic accelerators are installed in several PCI Express slots of 16X format (usually there are 2 or 3 of them in this case). They are additionally connected to each other with special adapters. As a result, the processing of graphic information was divided between several video accelerators, and this made it possible to obtain a significant increase in performance.

    Graphics accelerator parameters

The code designation of the silicon chip underlying the ATI Radeon HD 4850 is RV770 with the PRO index. It was manufactured using the 55 nm process, which was state-of-the-art at the time. 956 million transistor elements were deposited on this semiconductor chip. The thermal package in this case was equal to 110 W. The number of processors compared to the previous two generations of video cards has more than doubled: from 320 to 800 pieces. It was this engineering solution that made it possible to significantly increase the speed of this chip. Also, the architecture of these processors has been redesigned.

The second point is the increase in the number of texturing units from 16 to 40. But the number of ROPs (rasterization operations) has not changed and remains equal to 16. The memory bandwidth was 64 GB/s in this case. The adapter itself has been optimized to work with the PCI Express bus in 2.0 mode. You can use it in 1.0 mode, but this will slow down the performance. Well, in motherboards with 3.0 support, the graphics accelerator will be the bottleneck. Therefore, the operation of a graphics accelerator in combination with a motherboard that operates strictly in PCI Express v. 2.0.

    Memory

The ATI Radeon HD 4850 was sharpened to use GDDR3 RAM chips. 512Mb — this is the amount of RAM that could most often be found in combination with this silicon chip. Much less common were more advanced modifications of this solution, which were already equipped with 1 GB of RAM. The capacity of the memory bus in this case was equal to 256 bits, which is solid even by today’s standards.

Almost identical parameters were in the older video card of this line — HD 4870. But the memory type in this case was already GDDR5. This allowed for higher memory clock speeds and higher performance levels. For comparison: the HD 4850 had only 2000 MHz, while the HD 4870 had 3600 MHz.

    Drivers

The difficult situation at the start of sales was with the drivers. Apparently, Canadian programmers did not have time to bring them to an ideal state, and as a result, various errors occurred when launching demanding games on PCs equipped with ATI Radeon HD 4850. The driver was further improved, and all identified flaws were eliminated. At the same time, the ATI logo in the software was replaced by AMD. It was these modifications, according to user reviews, that ensured the most stable operation of such graphics adapters. Moreover, on all major versions of the Windows operating system at that time — XP, Vista and 7. Well, the bit depth of the system software itself also in this case no longer played a key role, and it was possible to install on 32-bit OS modifications or even on 64-bit ones.

    Overclocking situation

The overclocking potential of this semiconductor crystal was quite good. But to perform such an operation, it was necessary to equip the PC with a powerful power supply (at least 750 W). Also, the graphics accelerator itself must be equipped with an advanced cooling system. Therefore, motherboards with a passive heat sink and a basic cooling system were not recommended for overclocking. And only products with a proprietary set of coolers can be subjected to this procedure. As a result, using the ATI Overdrive utility, instead of a combination of 625 MHz (for a graphics chip) and 2000 MHz (for RAM), a combination of 685 MHz and 2150 MHz, respectively, could be obtained. It’s an extra 8-9percent speed. It was impossible to improve such an accelerator even more. In fact, if the frequency limit of 700 MHz is overcome, then this accelerator has already become a direct competitor to the older HD 4870 model. From a marketing point of view, such a situation is simply unacceptable.

Competing products at the time of release

The ATI Radeon HD 4850 video card at the time of its release, as noted earlier, was a direct competitor of two NVidia products at once. This is GeForce 8800GTS and GeForce 9800GTX. At the same time, in the first case, the parity between the products was both in price and performance. Moreover, in terms of speed, the product from ATI turned out to be even more preferable. But this is in normal mode. In the case of overclocking, the NVidia solution compensated for the lag and often even pulled ahead. But the GeForce 9800GTX, taking into account its technical specifications, was a more productive video accelerator and, as a result, was more expensive. The difference in speed was 7-10 percent, which even overclocking did not allow to compensate.

    Situation in synthetic tests

In normal mode the HD 4850 scores 12200 points in the PC MARK 2006 synthetic test. If you overclock it to frequencies of 685 MHz and 2150 MHz, respectively, you can get an additional thousand points. As a result, its performance in this case will be estimated at 13200 points. In turn, the GeForce 880GTS in this case already gives 13500 points even in the basic mode. Well, if we also overclock to 820MHz / 1890MHz, we will get 15,000 points already. As a result, in a synthetic test, a solution from a «green» manufacturer looks preferable. But these virtual scores often have nothing to do with real performance. Such values only show a high degree of software optimization. In this case, the driver for the ATI Radeon HD 4850 video card is simply not «sharpened» for this test.

Opportunities in gaming applications of that time

The situation with gaming applications in terms of performance is fundamentally different for any product of the ATI Radeon HD 4850 Series line. Drivers in this case already play not so important role.

Let’s start with Enemy Territory Quake War. In this game, the hero of our review outperforms even 9800GTX in terms of performance. The HD 4850 has 86 images per second. In turn, the 9800GTX has 81, and the 8800GTS has 71. These figures are valid for the 1680 X 1050 mode.20 X 1200 the trend continues, and the indicators will be equal to 72, 66 and 58, respectively.

The situation is similar with Half Life 2. For the first mode, the values will be 111, 103 and 89, and for the second — 88, 82 and 71. The situation in Perseus Mandate changes a little. Here the 9800GTX solution becomes the leader with the scores of 184 (for 1680 X 1050) and 149 (for 1920 X 1200). The HD 4850 scores 162 and 127 respectively. Well, the 8800GTS is almost equal — 157 and 129.

Almost the same in Call of Duty 4. In this case, the values are 9800GTX are equal to 82 and 72, for HD 4850 — 79 and 67, and FOR 8800GTS — 72 and 62. The difference between the first and second places in this case is insignificant in terms of performance, but their cost differed significantly.

In Unreal Tournament 3 the situation changes dramatically again. HD 4850 again becomes the leader with 121 (for 1680 X 1050) and 97 (for 1920 X 1200). The second place is taken by 9800GTX with scores of 117 and 92. The last one is 8800GTS with scores of 102 and 80, respectively.

This trend continued in most gaming applications. Most often, the HD 4850 was ahead, albeit slightly, of its direct competitor in the face of 9800GTX. Moreover, this alignment is true for 70 percent of the software. Well, in the remaining 30%, the leader was already 9800GTX. However, it should be noted that the difference was not so significant. At the same time, the 9800GTX chip was manufactured using an outdated manufacturing process at that time (65 nm) and had a higher heat dissipation (156 W). So it turns out that the HD 4850 was the preferred purchase at that time.

Special version of this video card

The engineers at that time of the Canadian manufacturer decided not to stop at the achieved result. They released a more advanced modification of this accelerator — ATI Radeon HD 4850 X2. The X2 prefix indicated that this was already a two-chip video card. Accordingly, it was equipped with an improved cooling system, and its technical specifications even now allow solving most problems. Also on such products, 1 GB of RAM was mandatory. Such an accelerator cost much more. The only negative that he had for the first time after the start of sales was poor software optimization. Not all toys «wanted» to run on it. But a further software update by AMD engineers resolved this issue.

    Cost

The ATI Radeon HD 4850 turned out to be very, very high quality. Its characteristics are really impressive, and the test results indicate high performance. As a result, such a product cannot be cheap and affordable. But even being in a very difficult economic situation, ATI managed to strike a balance between price and performance and offer this accelerator at a democratic price of $199. But this basic modification was so appreciated. In the future, more advanced versions appeared, the cost of which could even reach $ 320. But in this case, the user received an improved solution with a high-quality heat sink and increased frequencies. Also, at the same time, it remained possible, albeit insignificant, to overclock the graphics accelerator.

    Reviews

The key drawback of all solutions in the ATI Radeon HD 4850 Series was weak software. Quite often, the drivers of this product resulted in the fact that some gaming applications did not function normally on such hardware. These were “emissions” from the game, and “freezes”, and the appearance of a “black” screen, although the PC itself worked fine. This is what the reviews of the owners of such an accelerator indicated. But then, as the software was updated, all problems were solved, and in the future there were no problems with the ATI Radeon HD 4850.

The Windows 7 driver has evolved in a similar way. A «raw» assembly with certain shortcomings was immediately presented, which was then brought to perfection by AMD engineers. The main advantage of this product was the price/performance ratio. At $199 this product could compete almost on equal terms with expensive GeForce 8800GTS or even GeForce 9800GTX.

    Results

ATI Radeon HD 4850 and its older brother HD 4870 did not introduce any revolutionary changes in the graphics accelerator niche. This is an evolutionary change in the products of the previous generation, albeit with a serious revision of the technical parameters of the solution. But the appearance of just these solutions in the premium segment «shaken up» ATI’s direct competitor — NVidia. As a result, the latter revised its pricing policy and significantly reduced the cost of graphics accelerators in this segment. This only benefited the end user, who had the opportunity to get a more productive solution at a reduced price. Moreover, it was even possible to choose a graphics card either from the «red» camp (that is, ATI / AMD), or from the «green» camp (NVidia).
