Is anyone experiencing mouse stutters with AMD Radeon cards on Windows 10 20h3? No matter which driver I install, I keep getting them on both my computers. AMD is also not being very helpful at customer support…
Should I just move to NVIDIA’s Quadro? I have two AMD graphic cards and both have the same issues. I’m almost positive it’s a driver thing since Microsoft’s basic adapter driver does not bring up the issue.
Cheers.

I’m afraid the issue persists. I think those would work for AMD Ryzen series. Not for Intel, as I’ve changed PCIE settings to Gen 3 on MSI’s BIOS and did the power settings change — and nothing has really changed.

Ahhh Sorry!
Yes it is for AMD. ..
I have no problem with USB and Radeon cards…
Anyway…
Uninstall the current driver with DDU
And try to install only the driver
Btw, here I use the PRO driver
It works with most of the Radeon cards too…

I have no more ideas…
BTW, the Quadro cards with small fans can be noisy…

Probably a dumb suggestion on my part, are there any other USB ports to try to plug the mouse into? I had similar stutter issues until I moved my mouse USB to the front of my desktop, then problem solved.

Some sort of frequentie of the Graphics Card disturbing the Wireless signal of the mouse?
Sounds stupid, but you never know.
Eg : I needed a new mouse and bought a medium model Logi model. On my Mac Mini,
sometimes the mousemovements where not translated. As if there was some dirt in the
optics. Tried a wired mouse from HP, no problem. So receiver ? Changed USB, used a USB
extension cord,… finally it was the desk ! The surface of the Output Platform desk is coated
with something that does not go wel with «led» mice. I changed it with a Laser mouse, no
problem at all, and the Logi is now doing great on my other Mac.
Just to tell, some weird stuff can happen, even if it’s seem totally not logical.

Same here,
I have multiple USB ports on my computer. I’ve noticed that when I connect an external drive to one of those ports (on the front), my mouse behaves badly and my computer seems to stutter.
Try other USB ports for your stuff.

After some empirical testing, I believe that the reason why my mouse cursor and UI was somewhat lagging, and monitor was flickering was because there was not enough VRAM and graphics power to drive a 32″ 4k monitor well. Now that I replaced it with the 12gb one, all seems to be just «dandy». haha.

Hmmm….I would have tried another mouse, the most affordable replacement in the chain. You did noy mention what mouse was being used. If if were possible I’d still use a P2/2 mouse. I don’t think they have removed that port yet. I always find the Logicech brand can be flakey.

The crappiest 10 dollar mouse should work.
Good News is they’ve got fixes for USB problems now.
Definitely not the usual trouble free times we were use to.
Even INT€£ released their newest chips without Graphics Drivers.
This is Bush league incompetence and poor Quality Control.

I’ve had this system for about 1.5 years, but with Radeon RX 5700 (reference) instead of Radeon RX 550. It worked OK, and then about 2 weeks ago I sold my Radeon RX 5700 and replaced it with the Radeon RX 550.
After installing Radeon RX 550 I noticed that sometimes mouse cursor lags / stutters / «skips frames» when I move it. I thought that maybe I need to reinstall drivers, but that didn’t help, and I ended up completely reinstalling Windows, which didn’t help either.
I’m emphasizing this again: I had a system that worked OK, I replaced graphics card to Radeon RX 550, everything else is the same — same PC components, same peripherals, same cables connected to the same slots, same desk, same chair, everything connected to the same power socket, etc.
The issue with lagging mouse cursor is sporadic, it does NOT lag all the time. Sometimes it’s OK, sometimes it’s not.
I’ve also noticed that if I create some GPU load, e. g. run FurMark stress test, or even play video in a player that uses GPU for decoding / rendering, then GPU and GPU memory clocks rise (from 214 MHz to 1183 MHz and from 300 MHz to 1750 MHz respectively), PCIe bus interface also speeds up from x8 1.1 to x8 3.0 (according to GPU-Z) and the lag is gone. This is actually the workaround I’ve been using for the last 2 weeks to «fix» the issue: every time I boot my PC I start playing a movie in a loop, mute it, minimize the player window, and with the movie playing in background I can work normally without mouse lagging.
There is no other issues with my PC, everything works OK: audio and video playback (both in browser and in desktop player), typing on the keyboard, playing games, running stress tests — everything is OK, even without the «movie workaround». I’ve also tried to run Ubuntu 20.10 in live mode from USB, at there was NO issue with the mouse cursor lagging, so I guess that proves it’s not a hardware issue.
I think it’s some PCIe power saving issue in the graphics driver. I’ve tried settings PCIe ASPM in Windows power plan to OFF, and I think it reduces the frequency the lagging occurs, but I’m not 100% sure because, as I said, the lagging is inconsistent. In any case, even setting it to OFF doesn’t fix the issue completely.
So the question is: what can I do to resolve the issue, or am I stuck with my «movie workaround» until I buy a new graphics card?
Mouse freezes in Windows 10 — how to fix it?
Many users experience mouse freezes, or rather the mouse pointer freezes for one or two seconds while working or in other situations in Windows 10. This often happens after a period of not using the mouse, for example, when typing, but it is possible and other options, including stopping the mouse pointer while playing.
This manual details what can cause the mouse pointer to freeze and what to do to fix the situation. The article will discuss wireless and Bluetooth, as well as wired mice.
- Simple causes of frozen mouse pointer
- Why my mouse freezes in Windows 10 and how to fix it
- Power saving for Bluetooth and wireless mouse
- High CPU load
- Other causes
- Video instruction
Simple causes of mouse freeze on the screen
First, some possible causes of mouse freeze, which should be eliminated before proceeding with the methods of solving the problem in the next section. These reasons are not very common, but you need to remember them.
Mouse pointer freezes can be caused by:
- For a wireless or Bluetooth mouse, a low battery may be the cause.
- For a wireless mouse with a USB receiver, the following happens: If the receiver is connected to the back of the PC, and the PC itself is somewhere under the table, reception may be unstable. It is not typical for any mouse (the characteristics of the reception and transmission differ from model to model), but it is possible.
- In the case of a conventional wired mouse, the cause of spontaneous stops of the pointer may be cable wear, and this cannot always be visually determined. If another mouse on the same connector doesn’t freeze, that might be the issue.
- Dirty lens on the mouse, work on a glass or mirror surface can also lead to the problem under consideration.
If all of the above options were ruled out, move on to the following causes and the corresponding methods to solve the problem.
Why the mouse freezes in Windows 10 and how to fix it
Now about those cases when, in order to fix the problem, you need to deal with the situation and make certain settings in Windows 10. Note: the first option in some cases also works for a wired mouse.
Bluetooth or wireless mouse power saving settings
One of the most common reasons for a mouse to freeze for a second or two, especially in the case of Bluetooth and a wireless mouse, if it happens after any short period of non-use is the device’s power saving settings, and not necessarily the mouse itself, but also the controller to which it is connected.
To correct the problem or verify that this is not the cause, do the following:
- Open Device Manager. To do this, you can right-click on the «Start» button and select the appropriate item from the context menu. In the device manager, you will need to check the parameters of not only the mouse, but also a number of other devices (not only those marked in the screenshot), which will be discussed later in the text and video.
- Check the power saving settings of the devices that will be listed below by right-clicking on the desired device, selecting the «Properties» item and opening the tab Power Management . The tab may be missing for some devices (this is normal). Also, if there is no tab, but the General tab has a Change Settings button, click it and see if the corresponding tab appears. If «Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power» is enabled on the specified tab, uncheck it and click OK, then check the other listed devices.
- For a Bluetooth mouse, check to see if power saving is disabled for both the Bluetooth adapter and the mouse itself under «Bluetooth» . But this may not be enough, check out the rest of the points below.
- Check mice in section «Mice and other pointing devices» and disable power saving for them if available. If there are multiple devices in a section and you can’t determine which one is your mouse, you can turn off power saving for all devices.
- For all types of mice (Bluetooth, radio, wired) go to section «HID Devices» and try to find your mouse and then turn off power saving for it. Unfortunately, in this section, finding the right device is difficult due to the many identical or ambiguous names. For example, in my case of freezing a Microsoft Bluetooth mouse, only this section helped, after disabling power saving for the «GATT Bluetooth Low Energy compliant HID device» device, which I found almost at random.
- For USB and wireless mouse with USB receiver in section «USB controllers» Disable power saving for USB hubs and Generic USB Hubs.
- Settings made in this way take effect without restarting the computer.
In case the problem appears on the laptop, I also recommend checking if the problem appears if you switch the power mode to «Maximum performance» — you can do this by clicking on the battery icon.
And by right-clicking on the battery icon and selecting «Power Options», you can view and select one of the available power schemes — some laptop manufacturers add their own schemes there, perhaps on one of them (with high performance) the problem will be solved.
High processor load as a reason for periodic mouse freezes for 1-2 seconds
Both on high-performance and weak PCs and laptops, you may encounter the fact that when the processor is under high load, the mouse starts to twitch. Unfortunately, this is “normal” Windows behavior and can often be observed when Windows 10 unpacks downloaded updates, zips and unzips files, and in other cases in the background. I recommend looking into the task manager (you can launch the Start button through the context menu) and check if there is something that causes a high load on the processor.
If it turns out that 100% of the load is caused by system interrupts, see the guide What to do if system interrupts are loading the processor in Windows 10.
Other causes
Among other causes of the behavior of the mouse pointer under consideration, we can distinguish:
- Connecting a mouse, including a wireless one with a USB receiver) via a USB hub (splitter) or a docking station to which other devices are connected. Pointer fading may in this case be permanent, or may occur only during active data exchange with other devices connected to the same USB hub.
- Connecting a wired or radio mouse (with USB receiver) to a USB port on the controller that is connected to another device or devices actively using the USB bus. For example, if you connect a mouse to the front panel of a PC, then plug a USB flash drive into the adjacent connector and start copying data from it, you can often get the effect of a “freeze” of the mouse pointer. The same applies to one group of USB connectors on the back of the computer (side-by-side connectors usually have a common data bus) or ports on one side of the laptop. Check: if the problem disappears when the mouse or its receiver is the only connected device on the same group of USB connectors, then this seems to be the reason.
- Problems with hard drives and storage devices (when data cannot be read/written due to damage, connection problems or power problems) can lead to a temporary halt of the entire system, including the mouse pointer. Improper operation of other equipment can also cause this, but most often it is about HDD, SSD, flash drives and external drives.
- There are mice where energy saving is not very well implemented on the part of the mouse itself — in this case, after a short time of no interaction, it “falls asleep”, and then, while waking up, the mouse pointer does not move. If you have an idea that this is the reason, I recommend checking the mouse on another computer or laptop: if the behavior is the same there, and other mice work properly, it looks like this is the case.

Mouse freezing while working is one of the most common problems that Windows 10 users complain about. This problem does not affect the performance of the computer, but still causes some inconvenience. If you understand the reasons for the jerking of the cursor, then it will not be difficult to resolve the situation. Further in the review, detailed information is provided on why the cursor can slow down and what to do next.
Possible reasons why the mouse freezes when moving on Windows 10
Cursor slowdown
The reasons why the mouse slows down in Windows 10 can be very different. A malfunction can be related both to the integrity of the mouse itself (wires, USB connector, hardware, etc.), and to the software (drivers, incorrect hardware settings in the operating system, etc.). The elimination method will allow you to accurately determine the cause of the cursor delays during its movement.
Drivers and their influence on the smoothness of the cursor in Windows 10
0x0000003b Windows 7 is the solution to this problem
Drivers are specific software that allows Windows to communicate with the hardware of other devices.
Please note! If the cursor freezes, it is recommended to check the drivers of the mouse, video card and chipset; update or reinstall if necessary.
Drivers for the mouse
The mouse, like any other additional equipment, needs drivers to be installed on the PC to establish communication with the «brain» of the computer. As a rule, when you connect a mouse, the base software automatically installs the standard programs for this equipment. In most cases, this is sufficient for optimal cursor performance. However, the fact that the mouse slows down in Windows 10 may indicate the need to update the drivers.
In this case, the following actions are performed:
- Using the «WinX» menu located in the left corner of the desktop, go to the «Device Manager».
- Next, go to the «Mice and other pointing devices» section.
- Find your mouse among the proposed list.
- Open the context menu of this equipment by right-clicking on it.
- Click on «Update Drivers…».
- Complete update.
If the twitches started after updating the drivers, you need to roll back:
- In the same way, open the context menu of the mouse through the Device Manager.
- Go to the «Properties» section located at the bottom of the list.
- Next — to the «Driver» tab.
- Click the Rollback button and confirm the action.
- It is recommended to restart the computer after the performed actions.
Mouse driver update
Please note! The rollback feature is only available if you have previously installed the latest updates.
For those users who use a branded mouse, it is recommended to install drivers from the manufacturer in order to operate the equipment without freezing. To do this, go to the official website of the corresponding company, download and install the drivers for the desired mouse model; latest update version. Installing the wrong version can damage your system.
Chipset drivers
If the mouse sticks in Windows 10, the reason may also lie in the chipset located on the PC motherboard, that is, the chipset. This is due to the fact that these microcircuits are responsible, among other things, for the operation of USB ports through which all wired devices are connected. If the user notices an incorrect connection or interference in the operation of such equipment, the chipset drivers should be updated. They can be downloaded from the Internet.
Please note! It is recommended to download drivers only from trusted sites. Otherwise, third-party malware may also be installed on the computer, which will cause the PC system to crash.
To simplify the process of updating the chipset driver, you can also use the free «CPU-Z» program. This application will quickly and easily determine the version and type of chipset present on the motherboard. For this you need:
- Download from the Internet and install the CPU-Z program.
- Open the Motherboard tab.
- Go to the «Chipset» section and get the information necessary for updating.
CPU-Z program
Video card drivers
An outdated video card driver can also be the reason why the mouse slows down in Windows 10. If this is true, then the device manager will not display the model of the video card, instead exclamation marks will appear; and the icon for sending to the driver control panel will disappear from the taskbar.
Another signal about the need to update the drivers for the video card is the twitchy operation of the mouse during online games. At the same time, in the Windows system, the pointer can work flawlessly.
This problem can also occur after updating the computer’s operating system. What will be due to software incompatibility.
Before proceeding with the update itself, you need to find out the model of the installed video card:
- Open the «Run» window by simultaneously holding down the «Win» and «R» keys.
- In the «Open» line, enter the command «dxdiag».
- Click on the «OK» button.
- After that, the required data will appear in a new window.
The result of the dxdiag command
Another option:
- Open the context menu of the My Computer folder.
- Go to the «Properties» section.
- Next — in the «Device Manager».
- And click on «Display adapters», where the system will show the information you are looking for.
You can update the video card drivers using standard operating system tools through the Device Manager. Or through the official websites of Nvidia, AMD. The download will take a few minutes.
Additional information! In rare cases, after updating the video card driver, the mouse cursor still continues to tremble. In this situation, the user is recommended to manually set the update frequency in the video card settings section instead of the standard OS settings.
Incorrect mouse settings in Windows 10
Fallout 3 won’t start on Windows 10: Troubleshooting
In Windows 10, the mouse also freezes due to an error in the system hardware setting. In this situation, the settings are repeated:
- Need to open Start.
- Go to Windows settings by clicking on the gear icon.
- Further in the section «Devices».
- In the left pane, select the «Mouse» device.
- Disable inactive window scrolling when hovering over them.
- Set the cursor speed in the Pointer Options.
Adjusting the mouse speed
After that, it is necessary to check if the mouse movement is not difficult.
Due to what kind of physical damage to the mouse does the mouse cursor twitch Windows 10
System inactivity loads the processor Windows 10 and 7 — solving the problem
The physical condition of the computer mouse will also affect the quality of its work. Therefore, if after checking the software the problem with the delay of the cursor has not been resolved, it is recommended that this equipment be checked for physical damage.
Wire test
The Windows 10 mouse is also buggy due to cable damage. To identify this, you need to carefully examine the wire, and check for kinks, pinched places, etc. Problems with the wire are indicated by the fact that the mouse only works with a certain position of the cable.
In this case, you can try to solder the damaged areas, or completely replace the device.
Checking the USB connector
Another possible reason that the Windows 10 mouse is stuck is a malfunction of the USB port through which the router is connected. In order to find out, you can connect a flash drive or other device to this connector. Make sure the system sees them.
Another option is to try using a Bluetooth mouse. If the manipulator with a wireless connection works properly, then the problem still lies in the connection.
Among the reasons why the mouse may freeze during operation is damage to the mouse hardware: optical sensor, laser, or controller.
Reasons why your mouse floats when playing games on Windows 10
Digital entertainment enthusiasts know how important mouse speed is when playing games. But sometimes even specialized equipment with a high reaction rate continues to lag. However, the problem is solved here too. Possible problems and ways to solve them are suggested below.
Delay due to low computer performance
If the mouse lags in Windows 10 games, then this is most likely due to low computer performance. That is, if the resources of the underlying software are insignificant, the processing and output of data will be slower. And the mouse will work with a lag. And for gamers, this is a significant problem.
Please note! To resolve the current situation, it is necessary to carry out a comprehensive optimization of the computer, or to upgrade the system unit. All this will get rid of unwanted router freezes during the game.
V-sync
V-sync refers to a certain amount of frame rate synchronization in a computer game.
