In conclusion of his theoretical review of new AMD platforms, Perekalin rightly noted that the company has certain problems with which devices its chips end up in. If we talk about laptops, then usually these are rather gloomy, ultra-cheap models — frankly plastic and saturated with a sense of total economy on every screw.
With the Jaguar architecture, things seem to be going well for AMD from the very beginning: the company was able to fit into both new generation consoles, so it has every chance to at least make some bread and load the factories properly. However, with laptops, everything turns out exactly the same as usual. At least to get acquainted with the new platform, the company produced a strange and completely nameless sample in many respects, which we will talk about now.
⇡#Appearance and inside of trial sample
Last year, AMD used the same tactic: at the launch of the Trinity platform, journalists were given a laptop called Pumori, whose entire lid was covered with a giant sticker with a beautiful AMD logo. Then we were able to satisfy natural curiosity: after removing the stickers and disassembling the laptop, we found that an old (2010 sample) and cheap pseudo-corporate model Dell Vostro 3400 was used as a base.0003
At the launch of the Jaguar, a man-made sample was also given out. True, this time it does not have a beautiful name, or even stickers on the lid. AMD is definitely learning from its mistakes: this time, the company’s employees managed to somehow order a completely unmarked laptop — do not believe it, even inside there are no clues indicating who made it and which model was used as basics.
It’s easy to figure out the manufacturer, though: the characteristic shape of the case immediately betrays ASUS. But installing the model is not so easy: the Taiwanese giant has produced a lot of various 14-inch laptops in recent years. However, this is not so important. Another thing is important: the laptop itself is frankly inferior.
The flexible, creaking body is made entirely of the simplest plastic. The keyboard backing flexes even with light keystrokes. As in the past year, it is not clear why they took a 14-inch model as a chassis, and even equipped with an optical drive: as a result, a plastic brick weighs 1.74 kilograms without taking into account the power supply — not that unbearable, but quite a lot by today’s standards. According to the cumulative sensations, this thing looks like the ASUS U32U we tested a year and a half ago.
Yes, we are fully aware that AMD does not manufacture or sell laptops under its own brand. And no less well we understand that this sample is just a case and a scattering of the necessary accompanying peripherals. And most importantly — this is not a laptop, but a motherboard with a new processor. Nevertheless, the theater begins with a hanger, the car begins with a cozy sofa at the reception of a car dealership, and acquaintance with a new platform begins with the device in which the chip is installed.
The fact that the main part of the laptop that you have to deal with in the process of communicating with it — the display — does not match the quality of the chassis in which it is installed somewhat smooths over the negative. In the sense that the matrix used, it seems to us, costs a little more than the rest of the laptop: this is the AU Optronics B140HAN01.1, a matte IPS display with a resolution of 1920×1080.
However, this is a double-edged sword: such a display consumes a lot of energy — probably more than a processor. Accordingly, the use of this matrix had a negative impact on the results of battery tests. Moreover, the battery in our beloved sample is not particularly capacious: 45 Wh, by today’s standards, this is extremely modest for such a rather big chassis.
PSU power — 65 W
The used drive darkens the picture a little more: last year, AMD put full-fledged 128 GB SSDs in miracle samples, and this year the entire budget went, apparently, to displays: in As a result, our The Sample received a Toshiba MQ01ABD100H hybrid drive with 8 GB of built-in flash memory. Accordingly, the disk also makes a relatively large contribution to the total power consumption.

Specifically, in our case, we dealt with one of the medium chips of the Kabini line — AMD A4-5000. The chip, consisting of four Jaguar cores, operates at frequencies up to 1.5 GHz, and this frequency is guaranteed, without any turbo modes, the successful activation of which depends on various circumstances. The L2 cache is 2 MB.
Kabini is not just a processor, but a system on a chip, SoC. That is, there is no separate south bridge in this platform — everything you need is already built into the crystal itself.
Both families of processors built on the Jaguar architecture are designed to use energy-efficient DDR3L memory. Unlike conventional DDR3, this memory operates at a reduced voltage: 1.35 V instead of the standard 1.5. In our The Sample, two expansion slots were soldered, one of which was equipped with a 4 GB authorized DDR3L-1600 module.
Just in case, we recall that in any of the models of processors of the Temash and Kabini families, the integrated graphics core consists of 128 GCN stream processors. Only the frequencies differ: in the relatively powerful A4-5000, the graphics operate at a frequency of 500 MHz. Of course, the video adapter does not have its own memory, part of the RAM is used for its needs.
The layout of the laptop is not very interesting: as mentioned above, the chassis is one of the cheapest, and apparently not young at all. Not «Zenbuk», alas. In general, from the interesting inside — perhaps the APU itself and the memory with which it is equipped. Oh yes, and here you can also find that The Sample, it turns out, is equipped with an NFC interface.
The thing in the lower right corner, to which a couple of wires go, elegantly glued with yellow tape, is an NFC antenna.
And here it is, APU Kabini. Sweet baby, right?
On this joyful note, we’ll probably finish our today’s «test platform» and move on to what we’re all here for — to test the performance and power consumption of one of the latest AMD chips.
⇡#Testing — performance
The processor part of the chip of the new platform has definitely been improved compared to Brazos. Of course, the new AMD processor still cannot reach the Core i3, but at least the ultra-mobile Celeron chip confidently overtakes it.
The progress in graphics core performance is also obvious: Radeon 8330 is one and a half times faster than Radeon 6320. Compared to processors of the Core family, their graphics performance strongly depends on the cooling system: different models with the same processors can have very different results. And if the hero of this review is able to cope with the less successful manifestations of Intel integrated graphics, then the more successful ones are too tough for him.
⇡ # Testing — battery
As mentioned above, the configuration of the prototype from the point of view of energy consumption research is far from the most successful. Laptops that are equipped with such a cheap processor, a mechanical hard drive, a large, very high-quality IPS display and a meager battery at the same time are found at about the same frequency as unicorns. In any case, we have not come across such monsters so far — so we simply do not have the opportunity to make a correct comparison with something similar.
And since the main consumer of energy in this case is the display, we tried to choose a model that was at least a little close from something that was not similar — in the end, the choice fell on the Lenovo Yoga 13 ultrabook. Recall that in terms of processor performance installed in this ultrabook the Core i5-3317U chip is significantly superior to the hero of our review. In graphics tasks, it also wins, but not so significantly.
Does the economy of the AMD A4-5000M justify this loss in performance? Apparently, yes. Even with a very unfortunate configuration, in our standard test scenarios, The Sample lasts noticeably longer and consumes a couple of watts less than an ultrabook.
⇡#Conclusions
Apparently, both in terms of performance and power consumption, the new AMD architecture fell exactly in the middle between slow but very cold Intel Atoms — in particular Atom Z2760 — and peppy, but rather voracious Core. On such intermediate products there can always be two points of view, optimistic and pessimistic.
In the case of our unforgettable The Sample, it turned out to be closer to the second option, however, in fairness, we recall once again that the sample provided for testing was, unfortunately, not designed in the best way to demonstrate the capabilities of the platform. But it seems to us that in the same Windows tablets, chips based on the Jaguar architecture can perform much more successfully. Precisely because they are noticeably faster than the Atom and seem to be noticeably colder than the Core ULV versions.
