a review in which we will figure out why they are better than the rest and past
An updated version of monoblocks from Apple was expected back in 2018, the anniversary year for this device. However, the “apple brand” decided to ignore the traditions and released updates a year later. And the new hotly anticipated versions of monoblocks have become a small (relative to the second model) 21.5 and more powerful 27 inch iMac. But, of course, it’s not just diagonal. From Apple, as always, they expected fresh and innovative solutions for all the characteristics of monoblocks, and in general, we can say that the expectations were justified. And why only in general, read in our article.
Appearance
The «Apple» company continues to follow its tradition of minimalist and even ascetic design. Simple smooth lines, thin (5 mm) but roomy body, and the same black frame around the screen as in the previous model. I must say that the appearance as a whole, except for the color of the case, has not changed in any way. Apparently, this is the part that Apple decided not to waste time on, paying maximum attention to improving the technical characteristics of the iMac. And in principle, it really did not play any special role. The monoblock still looks organically in any interior.
As before, there are minimal wires in the package, so they will not spoil the appearance either. All the necessary connectors can be found on the outside of the case:
- four USB 3.0 ports,
- two Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C),
- memory card slot,
- LAN connector,
- headphone audio output.
USB will be useful for connecting all the gadgets and devices used today by a modern person, and USB-C ports are already designed to connect a camera and an external drive for data exchange at speeds up to 40 Gbps. You can even connect additional monitors to the new iMacs if you want. Although the model with a 27-inch diagonal is unlikely to require «assistants» — they simply have nowhere to put. iMac 2019supports wireless technologies: Wi-Fi (standards 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac and) Bluetooth 4.2. It’s also worth mentioning that even under heavy load, both iMacs are quiet, but the compact version is noisier.
What’s in the box
The all-in-one comes with a Magic Keyboard and an Apple Magic Mouse 2. On the one hand, you immediately get everything you need to work, on the other hand, not everyone gets along well with these devices. The touch mouse has a small profile, which can slip out of your hand, and is also very sensitive to any movement, which can trigger unwanted functions at a particular moment. The keyboard has a small key travel and does not have a numeric keypad, which can also be unusual and not very convenient. However, for a surcharge, you can order a full-size version of the keyboard. But if you can get used to using it if you wish, then you can’t do anything with the fact that the charging connector on the mouse is located at the bottom. This arrangement eliminates the possibility of simultaneous charging and operation of the mouse.

Processors of the 8th and 9th generations
What pleased fans of its technology, Apple, so it’s powerful processors. iMac 1.25 is equipped with an eighth-generation Intel Core, but the larger version with a diagonal of 27 inches was the first to use a ninth-generation processor. At the same time, for the younger model, options are available with a 4-core processor with a clock speed of 3.6 GHz and a 6-core processor with a clock speed of 3.0 GHz, which the presence of Turbo Boost can increase to 4.1 GHz. The older model is offered with a 6-core processor, in which the clock frequency can be 3.0, 3.1 and 3.7 GHz, which can be increased to 4.1, 4.3 and 4.6 GHz, respectively, using the same Turbo Boost.
New processors in some scenarios show about one and a half to two and a half times more power than previous models, while providing graphics processing more than 50% faster.
Storage
Many were hoping to see pure SSD storage in the new iMac 2019 versions as standard, but you can only get it for a hefty surcharge. In the usual configuration, there is a small SSD and a large hard drive, combined into one using Fusion Drive technology. It allows the operating system of monoblocks by default to sort data at the block level into valuable and not very valuable. The first category includes the most frequently used files. For them, macOS allocates space on the SSD, everything else goes to the hard drive. With 1TB models, you won’t have to wait long for your computer to waste a lot of time and energy shuffling files back and forth. Therefore, in this case, it is better to pay extra and immediately purchase a monoblock with a clean SSD memory, so that later there will be no problems with this issue. However, Apple offers the following options:
- 21.5″ iMac with 1TB HDD and 1TB Fusion Drive with the ability to install an SSD of the same size.
- iMac 27″ Choose from a 1TB, 2TB or 3TB Fusion Drive or up to 2TB SSD.
GPU and picture quality
The new iMacs are powered by an improved graphics processor. On a 21.5-inch iMac, this is a Radeon Pro 555 X or 560 X with 2 and 4 GB of memory, however, a Radeon Pro Vega 20 graphics card with 4 GB of memory is available in a custom configuration. The older model has: Radeon Pro 570 X / 575 X with 4 GB of memory, 580 X with 8 GB of memory or Radeon Pro Vega 48 with 8 GB of memory (custom version). Top solutions from Radeon are similar to those used on the iMac Pro. These video adapters have acquired an improved computing unit and memory with almost twice the throughput of HBM2. This allows monoblocks to easily cope with such resource-intensive tasks as creating complex video effects and working with 3D rendering.
Every 27-inch Apple All-in-One supports P3, the extended color gamut. Provided that you have a camera with the same function, this makes it possible to highlight any even the smallest detail when editing photos. But even in the younger model, the image quality and color reproduction remain at the highest level. This is something that Apple could never be blamed for. The only remark that can be made in this regard to the new monoblocks is the poor adaptability to video games with a resolution of 4K and 5K. To achieve a normal perception, you will have to work a lot on the settings, but in intense gaming scenes, a drop in quality is still possible. However, iMacs have never claimed the title of the best gaming computers.
Conclusions
We have gone through the key features of both versions, so now is the time to move on to a more detailed analysis that will help you understand whether one or another version is suitable for solving your needs.
Apple iMac 21.5 inch
Great for basic computer tasks and a variety of applications every day. If necessary, he is able to solve more complex tasks of a professional nature. Its all-around beautiful 4K display with wide color gamut and rich color reproduction makes it easy to enjoy your graphics work. And any photos and videos on such a monoblock will look much more beautiful and detailed. However, the video card will not be able to provide spending time for 3D games. And if you plan to load it with full work on an ongoing basis, then, as already mentioned, it is better to immediately add RAM (the user himself cannot update) and take care of buying a version with an SSD.
