Stepping down to 1440p helps AMD’s GPUs, as the Infinity Cache hit rate improves, and thus the effective memory bandwidth goes up. At the same time, CPU bottlenecks start to factor in as well. Overall, the Sapphire RX 6950 XT performed 3% faster than the Asus RTX 3090 Ti, and 9% faster than the RX 6900 XT reference card.

In the individual game results, Nvidia claimed a few victories, with Flight Simulator, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Total War: Warhammer 3 favoring the 3090 Ti by 6% to 21%. Nvidia could also get another 10%–20% with DLSS Quality mode in the games that support it, but AMD gets the win at native rendering.

Ray tracing once again punishes AMD’s RDNA 2 architecture. It does hang on to sixth place, even with the 3070 and 3070 Ti now in the mix, but the RTX 3080 and above all take a decent lead, with the RTX 3090 Ti delivering a 55% advantage. Of course, the RTX 3080 Ti and above also cost more than the RX 6950 XT, so there’s that. But if you care about complex ray tracing in games, the RTX 3080 and RTX 3080 12GB are a much better choice than any of AMD’s current generation GPUs.

Turning to the individual game charts again, the RX 6950 XT now breaks 30 fps in nearly all of the games, Cyberpunk 2077 being the sole exception — and it has FSR support to get you there if you want. That makes DXR technically playable at 1440p, though it’s not a great experience for the most part. Minimums still dipped well below 30 fps as well in several of the games.

Extreme performance graphics cards tend to be used at higher resolutions, and 4K ultra was the only resolution we tested where the RX 6950 XT couldn’t beat the RTX 3090 Ti in standard gaming performance. It does come in second place overall, beating the RTX 3090, which is perhaps one reason why Nvidia released the 3090 Ti at the end of March. Either way, these are likely to be the two fastest cards from their respective companies until the next generation GPUs arrive this fall — and we also don’t expect the top Intel Arc Alchemist GPU to be able to match either one in general gaming performance.

In the individual game charts, the performance jump from the 6900 XT to the Sapphire 6950 XT mostly followed the clock speed increases. Overall performance improved by 11%, while we saw a range of improvements from 8% to 19% in the eight selected games. Against the RTX 3090 Ti, the 6950 XT was 6% slower overall, though it didn’t lose every game. Forza Horizon 5 still favored AMD by 12% and Far Cry 6 by just over 3%; the other six games did give Nvidia the win, however, with a 3% (Watch Dogs Legion and Borderlands 3) up to 30% (Flight Simulator and Total War: Warhammer 3) margin of victory.

As usual, the games you play will determine whether AMD or Nvidia ends up the better selection. As a value alternative, AMD obviously wins easily, though any GPU costing over $1,000 hardly represents a good value. Still, paying nearly double for a 6% increase doesn’t strike us as meaningful.

Using games with lots of ray tracing effects did change the rankings quite a bit. Where the RX 6950 XT came in second place overall in our standard suite, it dropped all the way to sixth place in our DXR test suite, and we didn’t even test the RTX 3070 Ti at 4K ultra. There’s a good reason for that, with 19.2 fps on average for the RX 6950 XT across the six DXR games.

Another interesting point is that the RX 6950 XT gets more than the theoretical maximum 12.5% increase in performance compared to the RX 6900 XT. Several of the games are right around the 10% mark, but Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition and Minecraft both showed 18%–19% higher performance from the new card. Some of that is thanks to the faster memory, but the combination of higher boost clocks and power limits appears to do the rest. The RX 6900 XT reference card can definitely hit power limits at stock when running certain ray tracing games.

This is where FSR would be beneficial for AMD, but Cyberpunk 2077 is the only game with FSR support out of these six. We’ll have to wait and see if FSR 2.0 can make bigger inroads, but really AMD simply needs faster hardware to handle 4K with maxed out ray tracing settings in most of these games. Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition was the only game to clear 30 fps, and only barely.

We’re also curious whether AMD will add tensor core-like hardware to RDNA 3 when that arrives, given that Intel has that on Arc, and AMD has similar hardware on its data center MI200 series «Aldebaran» GPU. Intel’s XeSS will support the matrix engines on Arc and will use DP4a (INT8) hardware on non-Intel GPUs as far as we’re aware, but maybe AMD and Intel could kiss and make up and try to make XeSS a truly open competitor to DLSS. Stranger things have happened!

AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT Review —

Video Card Test AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT Review —

Video Card Test The AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT is a new graphics card that is an overclocked AMD Radeon RX 6900 XT with faster memory. The number of cores remained the same, their clock speed increased by 3%, and memory bandwidth by 13% due to the use of GDDR6 memory. Based on these specs, we expect performance gains over the RX 6900 XT will be about 5-10%, which should help AMD in the battle of flagship products with NVIDIA. AMD has set the MSRP for the AMD Radeon RX 6950 XT at $1,100, which is $100 higher than the RX 6900 XT.

All AMD and Nvidia graphics cards have been tested at official clock speeds, so no factory overclocking is required. All data was collected using a Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor with 32GB dual rank DDR4-3200 CL14 dual channel memory on an Asus ROG Crosshair VIII Extreme motherboard using the latest BIOS that supports AGESA 1207. 9The 50 XT leads the test at 1080p at 309fps, 10% more than the RX 6900 XT. It also outperformed the more expensive RTX 3090 Ti and scored 11% more than the RTX 3080 Ti, which is more expensive than the RX 6950 XT.

Things change at 1440p and the RX 6950 XT now matches the performance of the RTX 3090 with an average FPS of 206fps, an 11% increase over the RX 6900 XT. It was also 4% faster than the RTX 3080 Ti but 7% slower than the RTX 3090 Ti. In terms of value, this is not a bad result for AMD, considering that the RX 6950 XT is cheaper than both video cards from NVIDIA.

At high 4K, things change radically with NVIDIA graphics cards topping the list, and even the RTX 3080 is faster than the new RX 6950 XT.

Nevertheless, this is a good result for AMD in terms of cost. The RTX 3080 Ti, for example, is 11% faster, but it also costs 16% more. And the RTX 3090 Ti graphics card costs 82% more for just 28% more performance at 4K resolution. nine0003

Watch Dogs: Legion

In Watch Dogs: Legion, the RX 6950 XT once again topped the charts at 1080p with an average FPS of 168fps, 6% faster than the RX 6900 XT and also 6% faster. % faster than RX 6800 XT.

At 1440p, AMD Radeon graphics cards maintain a decent performance advantage over NVIDIA GeForce competitors. Here the RX 6950 XT was 12% faster than the RTX 3090 Ti, 21% faster than the RTX 3090 and 23% faster than the RTX 3080 Ti. That’s an impressive lead, even though it’s only 5% faster than the original RX 6900 XT.

Then NVIDIA closes the gap at 4K, but the RX 6950 XT still manages to keep the top spot, only a few frames ahead of the RTX 3090 Ti. Here we see an 11% increase in performance over the RX 6900 XT, which is a good result and worth the price increase.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider

In Shadow of the Tomb Raider, the RX6950 XT takes the lead at 1080p with an average of 201 fps, an 8% increase over the RX 6900 XT. It’s also 5% more than the RTX 3090 Ti, 12% more than the RTX 3090, and 13% more than the RTX 3080 Ti.

Results were similar at 1440p. The RX 6950 XT beat the RTX 3090 Ti by a narrow margin and improved performance by 11% over the 6900 XT.

As usual, 4K resolution proves to be a problem for AMD’s RNDA2 graphics cards in the battle against NVIDIA’s Ampere architecture. Now RTX 3090 Ti leads the RX 6950 XT by 8%. We see a 12% performance boost for the RX 6950 XT over the RX 6900 XT, and that was enough to put it ahead of the RTX 3090 and 3080 Ti.

The Outer Worlds

AMD Radeon graphics cards don’t perform as well in The Outer Worlds as evidenced by 1080p results. The RX 6950 XT was slightly slower than the RTX 3090 Ti, but this is the first test where it didn’t come out on top. We see similar performance between RTX 3080 Ti, RX 6900XT, RTX 3090, RX 6950XT and RTX 3090 Ti.

Increasing resolution to 1440p reduces Outer Worlds’ CPU dependency, and we’re now seeing an 8% performance increase from the RX 6900 XT to the RX 6950 XT. The RTX 3090 Ti is 10% faster than the RX 6950 XT, even though it’s now over 80% more expensive.

Finally, in 4K resolution, the RX 6950 XT can only match the RTX 3080 10GB despite offering a 12% boost over the RX 6900XT. The RTX 3090 Ti is 22% faster at this resolution than the RX 6950 XT.

F1 2021

In F1 2021, the RX 6950 XT failed to outperform the RTX 3090 at 1080p, trailing the RTX 3090 Ti by an 8% margin. However, it was slightly faster than the RTX 3080 Ti, which is technically a good result.

Upgrading to 1440p, the RTX 3080 Ti comes close to the RX 6950 XT, although the difference to the RTX 3090 remains almost the same and the 3090 Ti was 8% faster. We also see an increase in RX 69 performance50 XT by 12% compared to RX 6900 XT.

Finally, in 4K, the RX 6950 XT falls even further behind NVIDIA RTX graphics cards despite a 13% performance improvement over the original RX 6900 XT.

Power Consumption

The system with the RX 6950 XT used 528 watts, a significant 19% increase in total power consumption over the RX 6900 XT with only a 10% increase in performance. The efficiency of these overclocked models has certainly plummeted. nine0003

The RX 6950 XT system used only 8% less power than the RTX 3090 TI system. So, if you care about power consumption and efficiency, these overclocked models are probably not for you.

Average FPS in 11 games

At 1080p, we can see that for low-res gamers who want maximum frame rates — mainly shooter players — the Radeon RX 6950 XT will be ideal.
