A few days after the disclosure embargo was lifted, a dozen tech blogs posted performance benchmarks of the new 12th Gen Alder Lake Intel Core processors. And although it is clear that many publications receive an advertising budget from Intel, the average results can be considered more or less objective. After running 1,100 gaming benchmarks in 17 labs, the Core i9-12900K has a complete victory over all desktop processors in this class, including the Ryzen 9 5950X.
Intel released processors at almost unusually low prices, so AMD will also have to cut prices and accelerate the release of the new generation Ryzen 6000 (6 nm; DDR5) to the pipeline, which should restore AMD’s status as a technology leader in January-February. However, the next three months are Intel time.
Here are the summary results of 1100 gaming tests as a percentage in relation to the Core i9-12900K, geometric mean everywhere.
Tests were performed without overclocking, at stock frequencies, only in real games, strictly at limited settings (usually 720p or 1080p). The «average performance» score is weighted towards tests with more comprehensive coverage. For Intel processors, the minimum recommended price of KF models is indicated.

On October 27, 2021, Intel released specifications and pricing for the 12th Gen Alder Lake Intel Core processors: i9-12900K, i7-12700K, and i5-12600K, and on November 4, 2021, the benchmark embargo was lifted and the processors officially went on sale.
Alder Lake models are manufactured using Intel’s new 7 (10nm) hybrid big.LITTLE process technology, which is often used on ARM architecture, including Apple M1 series processors with two core sizes: P and E. All cores accelerate well if the temperature regime is observed. With liquid nitrogen installation — up to 6.8 GHz (P). Overclocking of cores P, E, GPU and memory (up to DDR5-8000) is supported by the manufacturer. There is an official overclocking utility Extreme Tuning Utility (ETU).
Synthetic benchmarks like 3DMark and Cinebench in labs are usually done separately, but even there the results are similar, with the advantage of the Core i9-12900K.
Apparently, the main reason for the leadership of the Core i9-12900K is fast DDR5 memory. Of course, processors of previous generations of Intel and AMD were tested with DDR4, which gives a performance difference of up to 25% compared to DDR5 (video from the famous German engineer and overclocker Roman «der8auer» Hartung).
In this situation, AMD can only hope for a new generation of its Ryzen 6000 processors with DDR5 support. And the logical solution would be to lower prices for the previous (current) generation. All buyers can only welcome this move. Especially in the current shortage of electronics, when all other components are constantly rising in price.
There is no official announcement from AMD about changing the minimum recommended price yet, but this move suggests itself. The major US retailer Micro Center was the first to announce price cuts.
Unfortunately, online orders for this product are not available. You can pick up the purchase only in the offline store. Perhaps this is just a promotion of a particular chain of stores, because other sellers have not yet reduced prices.
The Ryzen 6000 line of processors with DDR5 memory support and integrated Navi2 graphics is expected to be released at the end of January 2022. By the way, the same GPU is integrated into the current APUs (Van Gogh) of Valve’s Steam Deck consoles, also running on AMD processors.
The performance of 4 cores, if any, and performance per core has the greatest impact on the result, since most games do not fully use more than 4 cores.

Different tasks require different CPU strengths. A system with few fast cores and low memory latency will be fine for the vast majority of games, but will be inferior to a system with a lot of slow cores in a rendering scenario.
We believe that a minimum of 4/4 (4 physical cores and 4 threads) processor is suitable for a budget gaming PC. At the same time, some games can load it at 100%, slow down and freeze, and performing any tasks in the background will lead to a drop in FPS.
Ideally, the budget shopper should aim for a minimum of 4/8 and 6/6. A gamer with a big budget can choose between 6/12, 8/8 and 8/16. Processors with 10 and 12 cores can perform well in games with high frequency and fast memory, but are overkill for such tasks. Also, buying for the future is a dubious undertaking, since in a few years many slow cores may not provide sufficient gaming performance.
When choosing a processor for your work, consider how many cores your programs use. For example, photo and video editors can use 1-2 cores when working with filtering, and rendering or converting in the same editors already uses all threads.
