This MXM graphics card is a pathetic show of gaming performance in 2018. The Quadro 770M can barely run flash games in browser, and barely manages to launch games at 720p. Once running, 20fps is the max attainable framerate in most 3D games. That being stated, it will manage to run Youtube videos at 720p resolution. Much more, and there is disappointment waiting for you. If you have a laptop with the Quadro FX770M, it is time to upgrade. [Sep ’18 Neoaculus]

ATI started Mobility Radeon X1800 sales on March 1, 2006. This is a notebook video card based on process 90 nm, primarily aimed at gamers.
In terms of compatibility, this is a card connected via the MXM-III interface.
We don’t have any test results for the Mobility Radeon X1800.
ATI’s positions in the notebook graphics market are traditionally strong. Even during the years of NVIDIA’s «victorious march» with its GeForce 256, GeForce 2, GeForce 3 and GeForce 4, when it seemed that apart from this very GeForce for desktop computers, there was nothing worthy of attention, even in those very tense years for the Canadian manufacturer in laptops used ATI graphics. Or integrated solutions, but certainly not NVIDIA.
And, naturally, when the Canadian «graphic designer» experienced a renaissance with the extremely successful «9000» series Radeon family, ATI’s one-man marathon in the notebook video card market continued successfully. Or rather, it received a second wind in the form of first the Mobility Radeon 9600, and then the Mobility Radeon 9700. Actually, in those years it was almost impossible to find a powerful multimedia laptop equipped with any other graphics.
But few people know that along with, frankly, not brilliant in terms of performance MR 9700, the Canadian company also developed a more worthy mobile video chip — Mobility Radeon 9800. Compared to desktop solutions, it was not so impressive, but for laptops it was just a revelation, a transition to some fundamentally new level. Indeed, at that time, few people could have imagined that a video chip with 8 pixel and 4 vertex pipelines and a 256-bit memory bus could be installed in a portable computer.
ATI Mobility Radeon 9800: Top Mobile Graphics of 2004
However, it was too early to rejoice — the Mobility Radeon 9800 was not widely used, only a few laptop models were released on its basis, and none of them reached our market.
After that, forming the «tenth» series, that is, Mobility Radeon X, ATI, among others, which have become no less popular than the MR 9700, also introduced a new flagship — Mobility Radeon X800. It had 12 pixel and 6 vertex pipelines, a traditional 256-bit bus for top boards, and good recommended frequencies — 400/400 MHz.
However, this solution also did not become popular, based on it only a few companies specializing in portable and not very enthusiastic computers released laptops. Interestingly, the lack of popularity in this case was due not so much to the fact that the MR X800 was «too advanced» for its time, but also to the fact that ATI’s main competitor, NVIDIA, paid close attention to the mobile video chip market. At that time, she introduced the more than successful GeForce 6 family, which became a convincing revenge for the unsuccessful «5000th» series.
Among others, NVIDIA introduced the most powerful GeForce Go 6800 and its top version GeForce Go 6800 Ultra. The most important success of the manufacturer was that he managed to reach an agreement with many vendors on the use of Go 6800 in top multimedia notebooks. Apparently, the MXM module developed by NVIDIA played an important role in this, which made it possible to simplify the development of the design of the laptop’s «stuffing» due to the unification of video cards in size, power consumption and connection method.
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6800 — the «killer» of MR 9800 and MR X800
When it came time to change the line, NVIDIA introduced a new pair of top solutions, Go 7800 and 7800 GTX, once again raising the performance of mobile computers to a new level thanks to the availability of 16 and 24 (for 7800 and 7800 GTX, respectively) pixel, 6 and 8 vertex pipelines, which has become the standard for such solutions 256-bit memory bus and very impressive frequencies — 400/550 MHz. The company continued to manufacture boards in the form of MXM modules, which certainly greatly simplified the transition for laptop manufacturers to a new generation of graphics solutions.
In addition, after a very short time by market standards, improved versions of these boards, 7900 GS and 7900 GTX, were introduced. This time, the novelties have already received 20 and 24 pixel pipelines with an equal number of texture modules. And the frequencies of the top solution were raised to completely unrealistic 500/600 MHz. Finally, the most turbocharged adapter of this series, the Go 7950 GTX, was released this fall.
ATI Mobility Radeon X1800: photo of the
chip Needless to say, it was announced at about the same time as the pair 7900 GS/GT ATI Mobility Radeon X1800 looked rather pale against the background of this abundance? If he could still compete with the 7800 and 7800 GTX, then the duel with the newer NVIDIA solutions was obviously beyond his strength. For greater clarity, let’s compare its characteristics with NVIDIA’s top solutions, on the one hand, and with mainstream graphics from both leading manufacturers, on the other.

Unlike mainstream ATI chips i. e. X1600 and X1700, MR X1800 is equipped with the number of texture units equal to the number of pixel pipelines, so in most cases it will be faster — especially when the scene uses more conventional texturing than shader effects . At the same time, compared to NVIDIA’s current mainstream chip, the Go 7700, it has almost nothing to brag about, except perhaps a 256-bit memory bus. It is very likely that it will add speed, after all, 128 bits for a 12-pipeline GPU, in our opinion, is not enough.

The MSI Geminium Go prototype video card demonstrated in January of this year sparked curiosity, but with a sensible assessment of its market prospects, there were doubts about the demand for such a solution. However, it was the world’s first video card with the ability to upgrade graphics chips. In addition, there were two of them, they were located on mobile MXM modules along with memory along the printed circuit board.
At CeBIT 2006, MSI demonstrated an updated version of the Geminium Go, which had more modest dimensions. Now the MXM modules were mounted on both sides of the PCB. In addition, the exhibition sample already had video chip coolers.
No one has yet thought of making a video card based on two chips that will be located on opposite surfaces of the graphics card. In profile, this product resembles video cards manufactured by SUMA, which at one time were equipped with a second cooler, designed to cool a part of the textolite under the graphics chip on the back of the board. Such a decision did not justify itself, although passive radiators in this place are now used all the time.
To successfully upgrade such a video card, the user will need MXM modules with new graphics chips. Now it is extremely difficult to find them in free sale, if at all possible. Each module will need its own cooler, connected to the connector on the Geminium Go board. In other words, if MSI decides to promote this product to the market, it will have to take care of the supporters of «piecewise» modernization of the graphics card. So far, the market niche for Geminium Go and the volume of demand have not been determined, and the fate of the product can be decided around July.

The debut of Zalman’s new video card cooler called the VF900-Cu was promising: light and low profile, this cooler with ingeniously placed heatpipes was supposed to provide a good balance of noise and performance. It remained only to find out how good it is in business, and what its retail price will be.
A review of this cooler on the Pro-clockers site will help to partially answer these questions.
The abundance of illustrations will allow you to study the cooler installation procedure even for those who do not know English well. Owners of GeForce 6800 GT video cards will generally be able to understand whether they need to switch to Zalman VF900-Cu — in the review, we used just such a video card manufactured by Leadtek with an original standard cooler, which is one of the most efficient in the class.
The final results of comparing the Zalman VF900-Cu with the standard GeForce 6800 GT cooler from Leadtek may not look impressive, because the temperature dropped only a couple of degrees at rest, and eight degrees under load, and overclocking improved by 5 MHz in the core. However, the cooler from Zalman was much quieter, took up less space, and weighed noticeably less. Please note that the thickness of the radiator fins is only 0.2 mm — an accuracy worthy of jewelry masterpieces :).
Perhaps this is where its main advantages lie: it is compact, compatible with a wide range of video cards, does not overload the printed circuit board with its weight, and has good efficiency with a low noise level. Thanks to the included Fan Mate 2, the fan speed can be continuously adjusted.
By the way, the cooler also has disadvantages. First, it is traditionally expensive ($49). Secondly, it is not compatible with all video cards. To clarify the last nuance, it is recommended to look at the Zalman website, where the list of compatible video cards is regularly updated. We hope to test Zalman VF900-Cu will still succeed with a wide range of the most overclocked modern video cards.

For ATI, the transition to the 0.08 micron process technology could mean the possibility of releasing video cards of the middle price segment based on the RV570 chip with a 256-bit bus. Today’s Radeon X1800 GTO, based on the 0.09 µm R520 chip, does not allow the price to be reduced below a certain level, and this to some extent undermines the chances of success in the fight against the GeForce 7600 GT. The 0.08 µm chips RV570, RV560, RV535 and RV505 are expected to appear this summer.
Meanwhile, the DigiTimes website, citing its own sources among manufacturers, reported that ATI may reconsider the timing of migration to the 0.08 micron process technology. As you know, in this matter, a lot can depend on TSMC and UMC, which are contractors for the production of graphics chips. In addition, each new model of a chip produced according to a new process technology can demonstrate its own level of yield of suitable microcircuits. As a result, it may turn out that one family of chips «succeeded», while another may have problems, although they are produced on the same equipment by the same manufacturer.
Taiwanese sources report that ATI may refrain from switching to 0. 08 micron technology in the third quarter of this year due to lack of confidence in the degree of maturity of this process technology. Each new stage of the technical process is more difficult to master, it takes more and more time to mature. For example, the 0.09 micron R520 chip, which debuted last year, has long been in short supply, although much of the blame fell on the shoulders of the designers, and not TSMC itself.
Existing 0.09The process technology is well developed, and in order to reduce the risk, ATI may release the RV560 and RV570 using 0.09 micron process standards. nVidia hasn’t decided on the assortment and release dates of 0.08 micron products at all, so for it such problems belong to a more distant future. Admittedly, the recently released 0.09 µm chips G71 and G73 have a good combination of frequency potential and power consumption, so sticking to the 0.09 µm process technology nVidia may take longer.
Meanwhile, Taiwanese sources report that video chip manufacturers will still offer samples of 0. 08 micron solutions in the second half of this year. When it comes to mass production, one can only guess. Note that this concern is not shared by some of the sources we interviewed, close to the manufacturers of graphic solutions. It may well be that the 0.08 micron technical process will be mastered within the previously scheduled time frame.

Announcements tightly grouped in time stopped, and happy consumers, in full accordance with the latest trends in announcement craftsmanship, began to receive serial video cards at recommended prices. Utopia? If we are talking about North American buyers of video cards GeForce 7600 GT, then all this is true. We are certainly read in the USA, but a significant part of the audience still lives in Russia, and therefore it is much more interesting to study the realities of the local market.
So, in the abstract ideal picture of the world, the positioning of the Radeon x1800 GTO and GeForce 7600 GT looked like this: deliveries of the brainchild of ATI at a price of $249were supposed to start at the end of March, the nVidia-based video card went on sale starting at $199 on the first day after the announcement. Both products have some price reduction potential, but the Radeon X1800 GTO has a much worse one.
We managed to consult with manufacturers and suppliers of video cards operating in the Russian market, after which the idealistic colors in the picture described above faded noticeably. First of all, the Radeon X1800 GTO will appear in Russia around April, although serial video cards are already available to distributors. Retail prices may shock Americans, Europeans or Japanese, but they are more familiar to Russians than thirty degrees of frost. If you’re looking to buy a Radeon X1800 GTO for less than $300, you should hunt for the OEM package — even save a dozen dollars if you’re lucky. In other words, such video cards will cost approximately $29.0.
Retail bundles of the Radeon X1800 GTO will cost more than $300. In this sense, the price of the R520 video chip for the Radeon X1800 GTO, named by the British colleagues, fits in well with some existing patterns. Typically, the cost of a video card consists of several parts, the share of a graphics chip is usually allocated about a third. We multiply $120 by three, we get $360. If you come across a Radeon X1800 GTO at this price, don’t be surprised.
Note that the RV570 chip coming out in summer will have a more attractive combination of price and quality. We cannot name the exact proportions, but at least it will be initially produced for its price niche, and will not be borrowed from a more expensive one due to «shore decommissioning».
Video cards GeForce 7600 GT will also please domestic consumers not earlier than the end of March, although there may be some exceptions here. They will cost $230-260 or more, but the dynamics of price changes will be more lively due to the low production cost of the graphics chip itself.
In other words, the price parity between Radeon X1800 GTO and GeForce 7600 GT will remain on the Russian market as well. Only in the best case, the difference in price between the video cards of these models will be equal to $50, more often it will be more. Perhaps now you imagine the budget for future purchases, if one of these new products interested you :).
