Introduction

When it comes to building a computer it takes lots of time and determination to put everything together. By splitting up a big project into smaller pieces, the project becomes much less daunting. In this guide, I will detail how to hook up your front panel connectors from your computer chassis to your ATX Motherboard with ASUS Z490 Wi-Fi (ASIN: B086QSD3M4). In other words, I will teach you how to get your front panel inputs/outputs (Reset, Power On, LED Power light) to actually work.

When building a computer it is necessary to ensure that your motherboard is compatible with all other components including the computer chassis.

WARNING:

  • Do not work on a motherboard on the carpet. Static electricity can fry the motherboard.

      Edit

      • Once the screws are removed lift off the side panel to expose the motherboard and internal cables.

      • Locate where the front panel pins are.

      Edit

      • Plug the cable marked Reset SW into the motherboard. This will allow your reset button to actually work.

      Edit

      • Plug the Power SW cable in above the Reset SW on the motherboard. This will allow you to turn on your computer with the power button on the front of your PC case.

      Edit

      • Connect the Power Led — cable to the prong on the right.

      • This is the final cable structure.

    Power SW und Reset SW an Mainboard anschließen — so geht’s

    | von
    Tim Aschermann

    Applications for calculating calories

    The main principle of all diets is to consume fewer calories than you expend. To do this, you need to calculate the daily energy expenditure and keep track of every piece that enters the mouth. You will have to weigh a portion of food yourself, the apps will do the rest for you.

    1. FatSecret

    Completely free application with an intuitive interface. It takes into account the total calorie content, the amount of proteins, fats and carbohydrates consumed. A large database of products, in which you can also find dishes from popular restaurant chains. In addition to BJU (proteins, fats, carbohydrates), the program takes into account the amount of sugar, fiber, sodium, cholesterol. Shows statistics for the day, current and last week.

    The app also allows you to track your calorie consumption by choosing from several activities. But you should understand that the program will offer approximate values. It is almost impossible to track the exact energy consumption without a heart rate monitor.

    CMOS Reset Program — Dudom

    This article is about how to reset the BIOS to factory settings. This is necessary if you yourself have changed something. This could lead to the following consequences: unstable operation of the computer (PC) / laptop, inability to turn on the PC / laptop, black screen of the operating system loading, unknown password for entering the BIOS setup, and many others.

    Hardware reset of CMOS memory

    Let me remind you that the BIOS is based on CMOS technology (complementary logic on metal-oxide-semiconductor transistors).

    Turn off the computer/laptop. Pull out the power cord. Disconnect the battery (for laptop). Next, open the system unit / disassemble the laptop, because. we need access to the motherboard. On the motherboard we find a battery CR2032 , which looks like this:

    Fig.1. Battery CR2032, 3 Volts

    Next to this battery we find a switch that is signed Clear CMOS , CL_CMOS , CRTC , CCMOS , CL_RTC etc. The name of the switches may vary. It can also be installed 2-pin or 3-pin with a jumper installed in it. On laptops, the switch can be installed under the battery itself. This is how they should look like:

    Fig.2. CR2032 and next to the 3-pin jumper connector, which is signed on the motherboard as CLRTC

    Fig. 3. CR2032 and next to it is a 3-pin jumper connector, which is signed on the motherboard as CCMOS

    In another way, this jumper is called Jumper. Jumper (eng. jumper ) — a jumper that allows you to set the operating mode of the device by closing (opening) several contacts. In our case, the jumper can be connected in place to 2 or 3 pins (they are also called pin (pin)). To reset the CMOS memory (return the BIOS to factory settings), you need to close these contacts with a jumper for a couple of seconds, i.e. put on 2 pins (for 2-pin configuration) or rearrange to position 2-3 from position 1-2 (for 3-pin configuration).

    General method. Using switches, jumpers or buttons. To reset the BIOS settings or clear the CMOS memory:
    1. Flip the switch for a few seconds, or remove, install, reposition the jumper.
    2. Press the system unit power button. The computer will work but the screen may remain black.
    3. Turn off the computer. Replace the jumper or reset the switch.
    4. Turn on the computer.
    5. Enter BIOS Setup and verify all settings.

    Fig.4. BIOS reset switch named SW1

    Fig.5. BIOS reset button labeled clr CMOS

    If there is no Clear CMOS switch on the motherboard, or you can’t find it, do the following:
    1. Remove the CMOS battery from the motherboard.
    2. Close the contacts in the battery socket, for example with a screwdriver, to remove residual voltage in the CMOS memory power circuit.
    4. Replace the battery.
    5. Turn on the computer.
    6. Enter BIOS Setup and check all settings.

    If you have difficulty entering the BIOS, then read the article: How to enter the BIOS on a laptop or PC.

    Intel motherboard notice. The methods described above are suitable for most motherboards, with the exception of models manufactured by Intel . If you are the owner of the products of this company, to reset passwords, find the so-called BIOS Configuration Jumper (BIOS configuration jumper) and move it from position 1-2 to position 2-3. Close the cover and power on the system unit and monitor, then turn on the computer — it will automatically load the BIOS Setup utility in configuration mode. The main difference is the additional Maintenance item (Fig. 3), which contains, in particular, the option to delete all passwords Clear All Passwords . By selecting it, you will reset forgotten passwords. After that, you need to save the changes made (for example, by clicking and confirming your intentions), turn off the power of the computer, turn off the power to it and all peripherals, open the case of the system unit and return the BIOS configuration jumper to its initial position 1-2. To reset all BIOS settings, remove the batteries for 10-15 minutes.

    This can be done using the Windows debugger. The procedure is:

    Start —> All Programs —> Accessories —> Command Prompt (for Windows Vista and Windows 7 , right-click on defer Command Prompt and select Run as administrator ). When the window opens enter debug and press Enter . Further commands depend on the BIOS manufacturer. After entering each line, you need to press Enter .

    When working with laptops, it can be problematic to disconnect the CMOS memory battery or use a jumper, since neither of these can be explicitly present. The battery may be constructed with a CMOS memory chip. And disassembling a laptop is not always possible. In such cases, you can use the master password generators for service tags (codes shown when the password is entered incorrectly three to five times) or the laptop serial number. They will be discussed in other articles.

    The abbreviation CMOS stands for Complementary Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor. This is a tiny storage device that is used to store BIOS or UEFI settings. These settings are responsible for how your computer will boot, various low-level settings for the processor, memory, buses, and overclocking.

    You may need to reset the CMOS memory after an unsuccessful attempt to overclock the computer or when the computer simply does not boot as a result of something you did wrong in the BIOS settings. Resetting the CMOS will simply return all settings to their defaults and everything will work. If you built your own computer, then you know exactly how it is done, but for people who bought their own device, such a task can be difficult. In this article, we will look at how to reset the computer’s CMOS memory.

    HOW DOES CMOS MEMORY WORK?

    The CMOS memory that stores BIOS settings is volatile. It is powered by a special battery built into the computer motherboard. This was not done in vain. The default BIOS settings are stored in non-volatile memory and are never changed. All changes made by the user are stored in volatile memory.

    The correctness of these settings is very important, because they determine whether the computer boots or not, and as a result, you can change them or not. And if the user made any mistake in the settings, it is enough just to de-energize the memory and the settings will return to the default value. Everything is simple. And now let’s see how to do it.

    HOW TO RESET THE CMOS MEMORY VIA RESET?

    If your computer has a Reset button, you can reset the CMOS settings using it. It can be used not only to restart the computer, but also to do so. Just follow these steps:

    • Turn off the computer;
    • Unplug the computer from the mains, you can unplug the cord from the power outlet or power supply connector on the back of the computer;
    • Locate the Reset or Clear button near the Power button on the front of the computer;
    • Press and hold the button for five to ten seconds, then release. If the button is very small, you will have to use a needle or pen;
    • Connect the computer to the network and start.

    Basically, that’s all. This set of actions is enough to reset the settings in most cases. You can also run the BIOS by pressing Del or F2 before starting the boot and selecting the option «Load Optimized Defaults» this will be ideal.

    CMOS RESET BUTTON ON THE MOTHERBOARD

    Most modern motherboards have a dedicated CMOS reset button. It can be accessed after you open the computer case cover. It may be called CLR, CLEAR or RESET. The procedure is almost the same:

    • Turn off the computer;
    • Press the power button several times to discharge the capacitors on the motherboard;
    • Unplug the computer from power or remove the power supply cable;
    • Locate the button on the motherboard. If you can’t find it, see the manual for your board model. In different models, they are located in different ways;
    • Press and hold the button for five ten seconds;
    • Connect power and turn on the computer.

    RESET CMOS BY REMOVING THE BATTERY

    If your board does not have Reset buttons, and this situation very often happens with laptops, then you just need to remove the CMOS battery. This battery powers the memory when the computer is not connected to the network. Removing the battery is equivalent to forcibly clearing the memory. How to reset cmos on a laptop:

    • Turn off the computer;
    • Unplug your computer;
    • Press the power button several times to discharge the capacitors;
    • Locate the battery on the motherboard. Usually it is a coin-sized CR2032 battery. You can find it near the PCI Express slots;
    • Remove the battery, you may need to press a sharp object on the retaining element or pull it out from under the retainer. Act carefully, do not break the structure;
    • Wait a few minutes and then put the battery back in the same way as it was before;
    • Connect power and turn on the computer.

    RESET CMOS USING THE JUMPER

    Among other things, there is a special jumper on the motherboard with which you can reset the settings:

    • Turn off the computer;
    • Disconnect it from power;
    • Press the power button several times;
    • Open the computer case and locate the CMOS reset pins on the board. Usually, these are two or three pins put together and signed with CLEAR CMOS or CLRPWD;
    • For a three-pin configuration, move the plastic jumper so that the center pin is shorted to the pin it was previously disconnected from. With two-pin, just disconnect the contacts.
    • Wait a few minutes and then return the switch to the position it was in before;
    • Turn on the computer.

    CONCLUSIONS

    In this article, we looked at how to reset cmos on the motherboard, as well as using the Reset button on the case. If you forget your password or mess up your BIOS configuration, it’s easy enough to restore everything. I hope this information was helpful to you. If you have any questions, ask in the comments!

    Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) is a small amount of memory on a computer motherboard that stores basic input/output system (BIOS) settings. The BIOS is software stored on a memory chip on the motherboard. It tells the computer to perform various basic functions such as booting up and managing the keyboard. The BIOS is also used to identify and configure the computer’s hardware.

    If there is no boot or no memory mapping errors, clearing the CMOS may help recover the motherboards as it will restore the default BIOS settings.

    How to clear CMOS?

    Two ways to clear the CMOS:

    1. Using the CMOS jumper or a dedicated jumper on the system board, usually near the battery. Jumper position, timeout, and jumper location are completely dependent on the motherboard.
    2. Battery removal.

    See instructions for the two methods listed below.

    Steps to Clear CMOS with Jumpers

    1. Turn off the system.
    2. Open the system to make sure you can see the system board.
    3. Locate the CMOS jumper by referring to your motherboard manual and learn how to clear the CMOS. In general, the CMOS jumper is the three pins located next to the battery.
    4. Typically, the CMOS jumper has positions 1-2 and 2-3.
