High Performer. Handles everything you can throw at it
Purchased this graphics card as a gift to me after 20 years in my work place. I have been running it for around a month now, doing every days tasks to running some games.
Tested on the heaven bench mark, and it hit over 400 fps on 1080p. Is able to run games like Tomb Raider, Metro with RTX turned on, and Ghost Recon games in excessive detail while still remaining reasonably cool in the 60 — 70 degrees range.
It is a big card, so be sure you have the space!. The fans are quiet and run at very low speeds, with most of the time they are off during day to day operations.

One thing to note is there seems to be some chatter around the web for RTX 30xx cards (all brands), where sometimes they reset (screen goes black for a bit) during low use scenarios (like web browsing). This appears to be either a driver issue, or Windows. Setting your power settings in Windows to performance prevents this from happening.
Happy with my purchase. It is a lot of money to throw at a card, but will be future proof for a few years to come without going over-board in cost (IMHO) for more powerful cards. This card will comfortably run anything.

One heck of an upgrade
This was one heck of an upgrade from my old GTX 970, and it was worth every cent.
The RGB lights are also fantastic, now I just need more of them through the rest of my PC.

EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 really is FTW x 3
Excellent graphics card. I’ve been running it for about a month now, no issues whatsoever. Typically draws about 200W under heavy load, and it’s going absolutely fine in a desktop with a R7 3700/fairly normal setup/and a good 650W PSU.
It’s way more than enough for production (Adobe) to be very much CPU bound in terms of limitations. So far, same goes for gaming — Cyberpunk 2077 with everything at the max on a 2K monitor = this card barely even notices it/framerates always very high. 4K *might* be pushing it with highest settings; don’t know, no 4K monitor.

Temps — in a decently ventilated case, it’s absolutely fine. The cooler on this and heatsink array is big, and it seems to work really well. Even under heavy load for extended periods I don’t get much more than «medium» fan speeds and the core/power/memory all stays well within a very respectable range (below 60 degrees c, for me)
It’s a very solid/well built looking/feeling card. A lot of mass to it (which is good), but the solid metal backplate means I’m not getting any more than a tiny bit of sag/not an issue for me.
Cons… Well, you probably can’t get one right now. So that’s a big «con». But if you get the opportunity and you’re in the market for a 3070, definitely buy this one… Unless you need a smaller GPU due to case/mobo constraints, because this is a sizable GPU… Long term, maybe 8GB of VRAM might be an issue in a year or two; but for now, it’s totally fine. These aren’t really problems with the card itself though; definitely an excellent card, and I don’t have any complaints or regrets.

Seems that lots of these EVGA cards are having power issues and having to be returned. I got a dud one.

EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING — review and test
EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING (08G-P5-3767-KR) is the company’s highest-end custom designed graphics card based on the GeForce RTX 3070 «Ampere» GPU. So, the device received a giant iCX3 cooling solution, identical to that carried by the RTX 3080 FTW3 Ultra, which was reviewed earlier. The card combines a custom-designed PCB that has a VRM solution suitable for GPUs from the segment above and an interesting series of slots to let in air from fans.
Table of Contents:
EVGA’s GeForce RTX 3070 FTW3 Ultra features an impressive factory overclock of 1815 MHz (versus the reference 1725 MHz), tame iCX3 cooler offering three thick copper heatpipes that draw heat away through a copper plate base, transporting it into two thick aluminum rib stacks. Radiators are ventilated by three fans with individual speed control. Another highlight of the FTW3 Ultra is the gorgeous RGB LED decorations covering the top of the card.
There are other handy features such as PWM and ARGB fan headers, so you can sync the rig’s cooling and lighting with the card’s cooling. The FTW3 Ultra draws power from a pair of standard 8-pin PCIe power inputs, which should give the RTX 3070 plenty of headroom. EVGA’s $610 starting price for the RTX 3070 FTW3 Ultra is no easy feat and by far the highest of the six RTX 3070 cards we’ve tested so far. Find out if the card is worth the money (current (as of January 2021) $680).

Card
With the launch of the RTX 30 series, EVGA has completely updated the design language of its graphics cards. Now, instead of a transparent cooler casing, we get a classic black color combined with silver metal inserts and black trim. The review sample came with red trim on the sides. However, EVGA has confirmed that all retail cards will receive a black finish. At the back there is a high-quality metal back panel.
Size:
- Height: 5.38″ — 136.75 mm
- Length: 11.81″ — 300 mm
The card will require three slots in the system.
Outputs:
- 3x DisplayPort (v1.4)
- 1x HDMI (2.0b)
DisplayPort 1.4a outputs support Display Stream Compression (DSC) 1.2a, allowing you to connect 4K displays at 120Hz and 8K displays at 60Hz. Ampere can drive two 8K displays at 60Hz with just one cable per display.
Ampere is the first GPU to support HDMI 2.1, increasing bandwidth to 48Gbps to support higher resolutions such as 4K@144 and 8K@30 with a single cable. With DSC it’s up to 4K@240 and 8K@120 respectively.
The new NVIDIA NVENC/NVDEC video engine is optimized to handle video tasks with minimal CPU usage. The highlight here is the added support for AV1 decoding. As with Turing, MPEG-2, VC1, VP8, VP9, H.264 and H.265 can also be decoded natively, up to 8K@12-bit resolution. The encoder is identical to Turing, it supports H.264, H.265 and lossless up to 8K@10bit.
The Dual-BIOS switch allows you to activate the «OC» option, which is identical to the default BIOS and which simply runs a more aggressive fan curve without stopping them at idle.
There are two connectors near the back of the card. The first one is for sending an RGB signal to other components so that they can synchronize with the graphics card’s RGB. The second allows you to connect a case fan so that it rotates at the same speed as the card fans. Since the graphics card has the highest heat dissipation in most computers, it makes a lot of sense to stop the fan at idle during browsing and performance, and keep the fans running while gaming.
Unlike the NVIDIA Founders Edition card, which uses the new 12-pin power connector, EVGA sticks to standard PCIe power inputs. Together with the PCIe slot, this 8+8 configuration is designed to deliver up to 375W of power.
GeForce RTX 3070 does not support SLI. Only the RTX 3090 received very limited SLI support.
Removing the cooler
EVGA’s thermal solution uses a large copper baseplate in combination with five heatpipes to rapidly dissipate heat from the GPU. This part of the heatsink also provides cooling for the memory and VRM circuitry.
The backplate is made of metal and protects the card from damage during insertion and handling.

Performance
Power consumption
Standby power consumption is surprisingly high, 5W more than FE. This could be due to the third fan and RGB lighting, and possibly changes to the VRM layout. However, in other standby states, the power consumption is lower.
Average gaming power consumption exactly matches FE, only peaks and Furmark are higher because EVGA increased the power limit of their card to 270W. This is good as it opens up additional performance because the NVIDIA Boost algorithm has more headroom to work with.
Recommended power supply (manufacturer’s website): 650 W
Clock speeds
To perform this kind of test, the card is first allowed to idle for some time to reach thermal equilibrium. This is followed by an instantaneous 100% gaming load and key parameters are recorded, which gives a rough idea of the card’s behavior when the speed of its fans increases at the same time as the temperature rises. When the temperature reaches a stable point, that is, its increase does not occur within 2 minutes, the load stops and data is recorded during the cooling process.

Volt-frequency analysis
The graph below shows all combinations of GPU frequency and GPU voltage at 1920×1080 resolution. Constructed points allow you to arrange them to indicate more commonly used values. Light colored markers mean that the frequency/voltage combination is rarely used, and darker dots more often.
Frequency profile
Modern graphics cards have several frequency profiles that are chosen to balance power consumption and performance requirements.
The following table lists the timing settings for important performance scenarios and the GPU voltage used in these states.
GPU frequency | Memory frequency | Clock GPU Voltage | |
---|---|---|---|
Desktop | 210 MHz | 51 MHz | 0.668 V |
Multi-Monitor | 210 MHz | 51 MHz | 0. 668 V |
Media Playback | 210 MHz | 51 MHz | 0.668 V |
3D Load | 1650-2010MHz | 1750 MHz | 0.756-1.081 V |
Power limit
All NVIDIA graphics cards have been given a power limit defined in the BIOS to limit power consumption by adjusting the Boost frequency accordingly. There is also a second limit that determines the maximum TDP setting limit for custom overclocking, i.e. how far the power slider can go. In the second chart, the value (+xx%) shows the percentage increase from the tested card’s default power limit to the highest manual setting available — the slider’s adjustment range.

Noise Level
Like the Founders Edition, the EVGA GeForce RTX 3070 FTW3 Ultra has a fan stop feature that is ideal for keeping system noise levels low outside of gaming as they turn off completely.
The gaming noise level is quite high, especially for such a massive cooler operating at such low temperatures. Even at 35dBA, the card isn’t «loud,» it’s just audible, which isn’t all that unreasonable for a card in this performance class. Also, the differences between the default BIOS and the OC BIOS are almost negligible, it would be much better if the default BIOS would run the fans at a lower speed.
Cooler test
Comparison of video card coolers on an apples-to-apples basis has always been difficult. Obviously, just looking at the temperature will not work due to the fact that the heat dissipation between different models of video cards varies greatly, even from batch to batch of the same product. Another problem is that the fan control settings on different graphics cards are not identical, which also results in different noise levels. Even noise normalization leaves the fact that each card differs in power consumption, which directly affects thermal output.
To overcome these issues, Unreal Engine 4 created a custom gaming graphics load with the ability to instantly adjust the card’s workload on demand, allowing you to set a precise power consumption target. In all tests on this page, the cooler runs at a constant fan speed, which is carefully chosen to achieve a noise level of 35 dB(A).
It is now possible to test GPU coolers under certain thermal loads, which makes such testing independent of the graphics card used — the only variable is the thermal power of the cooler, which is monitored. This type of noise normalization test helps you understand how efficient your cooling solution is, how much heat it can handle, and how much more it can handle. The temperature graph in the table below is the GPU temperature recorded by the chip’s thermal sensors.

The EVGA RTX 3070 FTW3 Ultra comes factory overclocked to +90MHz, the second highest of any RTX 3070 card tested so far. The average GPU frequency in games is 1967 MHz, which is 4.6% more than the RT 3070 Founders Edition. This gives a real performance boost of 3% over other RTX 3070s due to the massive increase in power cap. Compared to other cards, the FTW3 Ultra is seen to be 3% faster than the RTX 2080 Ti on average at 1440p and 54% ahead of the RTX 2070, which is pretty nice. But the RTX 3080 is 20% ahead at a higher (30%) price.
The RTX 3070 FTW3 cooler looks identical to the RTX 3080 FTW3 cooler. However, things are different under the hood. EVGA has adjusted the heatpipe configuration to match the requirements of the RTX 3070, and the PCB has also been completely redesigned, now using a 12+2 VRM configuration. The 3-slot, triple-fan heatsink performs very well, even beating the large RTX 3080 FE heatsink by a wide margin in benchmark testing. Gaming temperatures are excellent, as low as 64°C at full load.
Unfortunately, the noise level is slightly higher than expected. At 35dBA, this is one of the loudest solutions of any RTX 3070 card we’ve tested. Yes, 35dBA is by no means «loud», you could call it «clearly audible», which is quite normal for an RTX 2080 Ti performance class card. However, the other cards here are better. There is no doubt that if EVGA allowed higher temperatures, their cooler could run quieter, as could the RTX 3070 from ASUS and MSI.
Because this graphics device comes with a dual BIOS, its users still have a choice between reduced noise levels or cooler temperatures. NVIDIA, with Ampere, has introduced fan blocking in its Founders Edition, which means all vendor partners will be adopting this important feature as well. When the user is not gaming, the FTW3 Ultra fans turn off completely for perfect silent operation.
EVGA has increased its card’s power limit to 270W, the largest increase of any RTX 3070 card tested by TPUs to date. This helps unlock additional performance as the NVIDIA Boost algorithm has an extra headroom of Boost for higher frequencies. Although the overclocking clock rating says otherwise, we see its highest out-of-the-box performance. EVGA has also given overclockers a decent range of manual power adjustments up to 300W.
It feels like there’s a lot of VRM stock here, and no one would be surprised if EVGA releases an XOC BIOS with higher power limits in the future.
According to EVGA, the RTX 3070 FTW3 Ultra will fetch $610 at launch (already $680 on the official website), which is too expensive. Unless you’re essentially a hardcore overclocker, the $110 price increase over the Founders Edition might not be worth it. In fact, for the vast majority of gamers, the FE will offer nearly identical performance with higher noise levels, but in a more compact form factor.
There are also many custom designs for $540 and below that are not much different from the FTW3. On the other hand, FE supplies are very limited, and they sell out instantly, forcing gamers to look for more expensive SKUs — this happened not so long ago with 3080 and 3090; where to get them for MSRP. AMD also recently introduced the $580 Radeon RX 6800 with promised performance that looks very impressive, similar to what the RTX 3070 offers.
